Update 4: Clear Channel Chooses Fox for News Deal
12.06.2004, 05:18 PM

Clear Channel Communications Inc., the nation's largest radio station operator, has selected Fox News Radio to provide national news for most of its news and talk stations in deal expected to nearly double Fox's radio presence.

No terms of the five-year cash deal were disclosed Monday. But Fox, a unit of News Corp., said if all options in the agreement are exercised, its radio service could have more than 500 affiliates by the middle of next year.

The deal helps Fox News compete with more-established radio news providers, including ABC Radio and CBS Radio. Fox News will air on many of Clear Channel's most prominent news and talk stations, including those in Los Angeles, Phoenix, Atlanta and San Diego.

Fox currently provides one-minute newscasts to 275 stations. Starting next year, it will provide more than 100 Clear Channel stations with a 5-minute newscast at the top of each hour, a nightly news broadcast and serve as San Antonio-based Clear Channel's primary source on breaking national news.

In return, Fox News Radio will have access to news produced by local reporters for Clear Channel stations. Fox also expects to hire more news anchors, studios and staff, but it said it was too early to be more specific.

"This deal positions Fox News to become a significant player in the radio industry and is another example of our commitment to the medium," said Roger Ailes, Fox News chairman and chief executive.

John Hogan, chief executive of Clear Channel Radio, said in a statement that local stations would get higher quality national news.

Clear Channel, which operates 1,200 stations, did not immediately return a phone call seeking additional comment.

Analysts said that ABC Radio, which is owned by The Walt Disney Co., stood to lose the most because of the Fox-Clear Channel deal. ABC Radio did not immediately return a message seeking comment.

Experts also speculated that Fox might have won the deal by taking cash instead of barter. Often in the radio industry, providers such as Fox get advertising spots that they can resell.

Clear Channel has been reducing advertising time in an effort to boost rates and probably wanted to keep its dwindling but perhaps more valuable inventory of ad spots, they said.

"Cash makes sense" for Clear Channel, said David Bank, an analyst with RBC Capital Markets. "Rather than give away inventory that is getting more scarce, (Clear Channel) preferred to pay cash."

James C. Goss, an analyst with Barrington Research, said Clear Channel wants to keep cutting advertising and Fox wants to grow as a news source. "They're both accomplishing what they want," he said.

Clear Channel shares rose 48 cents, or 1.4 percent, to close at $33.63 on the New York Stock Exchange - toward the low end of their 52-week trading range of $29.96 to $47.76.

Shares of News Corp. slipped 8 cents, or 0.4 percent, to $18.09 on the NYSE. The stock has traded between $17.16 and $39.74 in the past 52 weeks.

I am honestly truly scared. This is not something I wished to say.

I am slightly drunk right now, and will add more later. I'm afraid I didn't say enough, meriting a 'don't link and not discuss' reply. However, I want to see what TFP has to think of these recent developments. Suprised? Happy? Anger? Don't think it matters? What consequences, positive or negative, do you think this will hold?

Jimellow 12-06-2004 09:59 PM

Does this relate to satellite radio, or regular radio?

I've heard of Clear Channel, but am not familiar with them...

They are the corporation that has turned broadcast radio into crap.

From my car radio I get three CC stations that I occasionally listen to, and probably a dozen more that I don't touch. They are the Microsoft of the music industry.

Seaver 12-06-2004 10:31 PM

Clear channel sucks ass... that's all im going to say about that.

ObieX 12-06-2004 10:48 PM

The only thing that could make Clear Channel worse is if they got more power. Unfortunately this is what Fox has just given them. :(

DelayedReaction 12-06-2004 10:51 PM

And that's why I gladly listen to XM radio. For $10 a month, no commercials. The best part is that they even have a left-wing and a right-wing news channel!

Willravel 12-06-2004 10:59 PM

Thank God I am within the reach of an independant grass roots news station. CC and fox news joining forces. Hmmm *thumbs through the book of Revelation for more info on the merger and it's pivitol role in the end of days*

Something to do with the beginning of 1000 years of darkness perhaps.

Superbelt 12-06-2004 11:04 PM

Getting Sirius as a Graduation present (grad school) for myself at the end of this coming summer. Will never turn on a terrestrial radio again.

NFL games on sirius were the breaker for me.

There are 12 different CC channels in my market (Harrisburg) most radio, several television.

Mojo_PeiPei 12-07-2004 08:39 AM

In a slightly related topic, did anybody catch the Simpsons on sunday when the gigantic Fox News van pulled through Springfield with "We are the Champions" playing in the background? I thought that was hilarious.

The_wall 12-07-2004 10:52 AM

clear channels and fox teaming up together, thats a lot of evil in one company.

roachboy 12-07-2004 11:00 AM

this alliance makes it difficult not to believe in elective affinity.
the vile seeks out the vile.
they combine to form a new type of vileness.
such is progress.

guy44 12-07-2004 10:05 PM

And behold: for the corrupt will ally with the forces of the dark one, and yea, woe shall be the fate of the innocent and pure.

Mephisto2 12-08-2004 01:35 AM

Why don't you guys listen to NPR?

Any time I'm in the US I listen to this. It is of a very high standard.

Mr Mephisto

Superbelt 12-08-2004 04:50 AM

NPR and Stern are the only radio I listen to anymore.
-right now my Stern station is cutting him off at 10am, b/c they are whiney babies.
NPR isn't on during the middle of the day and after 6:30 either.

zenmaster10665 12-08-2004 06:20 AM

Rupert Murdoch scares me even more than Clear Channel....the combination of the two is truly dangerous...

:(

Yeah, I laughed pretty hard at that one too.

Still funny after all these years :D

Ustwo 12-08-2004 06:59 AM

Perhaps it would have been best to go with CBS, I'd hate to see them use a biased news agency.

JohnnyRoyale 12-08-2004 12:05 PM

Just one question: If it's on radio, how do I check out the hotties hosting the news?

Its funny when the subject turns to fox news.. the liberals start talking like the fanatical christian fundies. "Thou end art near!!" "Wicked and vile have joined forces!". "The time of darkness is at hand!". You guys have been reading to much of the book of revelations!

That is an excellent observation. I always have thought of liberalism as a substitute for religion for some people. Its based on a lot of faith, not a lot of results, and really ticks them off if you question them. This would be an excellent thread for the philosophy forum.

The_wall 12-08-2004 12:43 PM

In other news, Ustwo hates scary hippy pot smoking liberals

Damn hippies piss me off!

Nah, I just don't want to pay for their upkeep, they can smoke and be liberal all they like. I think politics have become a faith of sorts for some people, filling the void that is normally the space for religion. The similarities are profound and as I said would make an excellent philosophy thread.

pan6467 12-08-2004 01:02 PM

Actually, I think you'll see Clear Channel drying up very soon, sat radio is going to kill them.

Karmazin didn't leave as head of Viacom/CBS for Sirius because he wanted a pay cut to work with Stern.....lol

(BTW for all you out there who want to ramble on about CBS being liberally biased...... in an interview with Karmazin, he stated that while he was a friend of John Kerry's his vote had to go to Bush because Viacom and CBS make more money with a GOP president and he had to vote and endorse the president most likely to help his company.)

In all honesty, if I had money I'd sink every cent possible into Sirius right now, with Karmazin there, it's just a matter of time before Viacom/CBS buys them up.

Murdoch is an old man, he'll be gone soon and his family will destroy his company as so many families do. They'll fight for their share and control and eventually it'll be broken up. So News Corp while their bias is horrid doesn't scare me. Faux News is still Faux News and will start losing its appeal when something bigger comes along. I remember in the 80's and 90's hearing that CNN and Turner were brainwashing kids and had such a left slant that it would effect the future.... didn't did it?

What truly scares me are the sleeping media companies that are positioning themselves very quietly such as NBC/Unviersal, they are slowly buying up cable channels and becoming a powerhouse.

Disney will be a player once again after the dust with ol' Roy Jr and Eisner clears.

Fox is dying off (maybe that's why the deal).

Time Warner/ AOL is dying off, their biggest mistake was pushing Ted Turner out and merging with AOL. I see them eventually splitting apart again and both being extremely weak. But it depends on what Turner does.

I saw that interview, its called daming with faint praise.

funbob 12-10-2004 11:13 AM

Realize one thing, we live in a market driven economy. I get so tired of hearing people bash the hell out of Fox News and things like CC. Here on the TFP most of you are on that band wagon, but the market AKA most of the othere people in this country want Fox News if they didn,t it would dry up and go away. The same is true of CC, if people dont listen, then advertisers dont spend money, if advertisers dont spend money then programers find programs that advertisers will spend money on. Of course that is just my opinion, I could be wrong :)

let's see about the logic outlined above (no. 26) that tries to use "market forces" to argue that critiques of faux news and/or clear channel are somehow misguided because there is demand for each.

according to this,
all paintings should be of sad-eyed puppies or heroic bourgeois types following through after a doubtless wildly successful drive on the links, or of seagulls coursing over ocean waves, because people buy them and therefore they must be great paintings.

all music should coverge on britney and/or o-town and/or kelly clarkson and/or [the list of interchangeable pop confections is endless--fill in your favorite] because people buy this music so this music must then represent the pinnacle of musical achievement.

all architecure should converge on prison design because the building of prisons remains one of the fastest growing types of public space construction--there is therefore demand----and because there is demand, prison architecture is necessarily the finest in the field.

because market actors are always rational
you have to assume that each actor exercizes the most refined taste
socially available at any given point.

clear channel itself is equally proof of the above and
confirmation of the market ideology so dear to conservatives
according to which markets tend to equilibrium
involving a diversity of small to medium scale producers each of which is totally rational
because they compete with each other.
so clear channel is really about a diverse radio environment in the states
hundreds and hundreds of small, autonomous radio possibilities
and not about concentration
and homogenization
so clear channel is necessarily good.

within tv-land, the same kind of logic would obtain for fox.
because there is demand,
it follows that there is and cannot be any problem with the fact that most americans appear to rely on television for their information about the world.

because of demand,
which is always rational,
the obliteration of context, the hollowing out of information, the confusion of rightwing political biais with reporting are not and cannot be problems.

so if there cannot be a problem with television as information source in general, it follows that there is no problem with any particular television outlet as information source, nor can there ever be one.

glad you helped me work this out, funbob.
i feel more american now.
