Disgraced NY Times reporter to write book

This doesn't surprise me: From CNN.com (article link here) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Jayson Blair said he hopes to "write and share my story so that it can help others to heal." -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- NEW YORK (CNN) -- Former New York Times reporter Jayson Blair told CNN on Monday that "race, substance abuse and psychological disorders" played a much more "nuanced role" in destroying his career than is being portrayed in the media. "I am sorry for what I've done," he told CNN by phone. "It's my hope that others will learn from my mistakes." The 27-year-old journalist, who is black, resigned May 1 after a Texas newspaper questioned whether he had plagiarized its story about the family of a soldier missing in Iraq. Blair said he hopes to "write and share my story so that it can help others to heal." He has signed with literary agent David Vigliano to consider book and movie offers. Questions have been raised in the media about whether Blair had been able to keep working at the Times, despite a record of mistakes, because of his race or connections with top editors. The newspaper, whose managing editor, Gerald Boyd, is black, is trying to diversify its staff. Also, Blair is friendly with a staffer from Poland, home country of editor Howell Raines' wife, raising the specter that he received special treatment. Blair said: "There are many assumptions being made, that because I'm black, Gerald Boyd was my mentor, and because my closest friend, Zuza Glowacka, is Polish, I was trying to gain favor with Howell Raines. People will be surprised when the whole story comes out." A Times investigation of Blair's reporting discovered problems in about half of the 73 articles he had written since October. Among his fictions were stories about the father of Jessica Lynch, the former prisoner of war in Iraq, and the Washington-area sniper attacks, the paper said. The newspaper's management has faced criticism for allowing him to write, and even promoting him, despite the numerous corrections his articles required and the questions that some editors had raised about his work. (Full story, Other reporter scandals) The Associated Press reported last week that federal prosecutors were seeking information about Blair's plagiarized or fabricated stories, leading to speculation that he could face charges. (Full story) --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I don't want to hear anything this guy has to say. It is too bad he could potentially make money from this. Many of us depend on truthful reporting to form opinions on important issues. In my opinion he is a disgrace. I think he should basically have to start from the bottom again. This just seems like an easy way out and to celebrity status. I'll bet he cries a stream of tears and will have an even more important journalism position in the not to distant future. Last edited by rs8001; 05-19-2003 at 10:23 PM.. |

He's going to write a book? That's hilarious. I hope he can find it within himself.
Now, if he wrote a book about how much bullshit subjectivity encompasses the entire media, that might be a worthwhile read. Especially if he focused on the opinion writer's whose egos are only secondary to the masses of imaginary sheep they fantisize about hanging on their every word. Chapter One;,..How to spin, change and omit the facts to cater to those who hear, see and believe everything carte blanche. |

I hope no one is gullible enough to add to this dumb asses income by buying his book. Unless it is fiction why would one buy from someone who apparently wouldn't recognize the truth if it jumped up and bit him on the ass.

It seems to today that anyone in possession of "15 minutes" of fame can capitalize on it for a book deal.
Of course, this book is going to do well. It's a scandalous story filled with stories of racial bias, depression and such. We're going to buy it for the same reason we watch reality tv and rubberneck at accidents, we love to see others misery or in this case, "the black, substance abusing, psychological problem having reporter and the problems of being a plagurizing ass clown at a respectable newspaper, who requires journalistic integrity, slice of life bit" that we love to hear about.

Unfortunately, this is where journalism has gone lately. I have lost a lot of respect for "true journalists". They need to start teaching more about ethics in journalism classes. This guy makes me angry.
He is now making his relationship comparable to that of enslavement. He is going to hide behind his color eventhough as a reporter there was "free will". |
