Celebs touting Vote or Die: Did they Die?

Celeb 'voters' poll a fast one

So did they vote?
Or are they gonna die?

The early returns from Sean Combs' mega-hyped Citizen Change campaign suggested that reality television star Paris Hilton and rapper 50 Cent - who appeared in eye-catching posters modeling Combs' "VOTE OR DIE!" T-shirts to encourage voting - didn't make it to the polls yesterday. Another star, rapper Ludacris, did mail in an absentee ballot, according to his publicist.

But Lowdown's spot check of voting records in California, New York and Georgia - where Hilton, Curtis Jackson 3rd (aka 50 Cent) and Christopher Bridges (aka Ludacris), respectively, maintain residences - indicated that the three weren't even registered, let alone exercising their constitutional right.

Citizen Change official Alexis McGill yesterday said that short of bodily hauling celebrities to the polls, the group did everything it could: "Citizen Change contacted every celebrity's representative and was told by each and every one that the celebrities participating in our campaign were registered to vote."

A Citizen Change insider elaborated: "All the celebrities' managers confirmed that they were going to register if they hadn't already. We have to take the managers at their word. We have no business checking up on them - especially because none of the celebs got paid."

Hilton's PR rep, Gina Hoffman, had no comment yesterday, and 50 Cent's flack did not return detailed messages - though as a convicted felon and possibly not eligible, he might be off the hook.

Ludacris' publicist, Bianca Bianconi, said: "I just got off the phone with Ludacris, and he said he absolutely mailed his absentee ballot last week in Fulton County, Ga."

As for P. Diddy, he did a voting photo op yesterday morning at Robert F. Wagner Junior High School on the upper East Side.
I find it interesting that they bothered to get involved with something such as this, talking the talk but not walking the walk.

shame.

I HATED that whole Vote or Die thing. So stupid.

And yeah, shut up Celebs if you aren't going to go through with it.

the_marq 11-03-2004 10:02 AM

I like Alice Cooper's take on this whole celeb influence thing:

Quote:

"If you're listening to a rock star in order to get your information on who to vote for, you're a bigger moron than they are. Why are we rock stars? Because we're morons. We sleep all day, we play music at night and very rarely do we sit around reading the Washington Journal."
(Yes I realize that Poofy's campain was allegedly non-partisan)

Sometimes I wonder if it's worth all the time and effort to get the apathetic to vote. If they are that apathetic do we really want to hear their opinion?

inharmony 11-03-2004 10:04 AM

Not sure their goal in doing this even worked...according to what I've heard on younger voter turnout. And I agree, it is a shame they didn't vote...what was the point?

smooth 11-03-2004 10:05 AM

Celebs?

Only 1 didn't vote (of those who could) from the posted article.

Paris was probably gettting stuffed and/or doped at the time, anyway. I couldn't care less what she has to do or say about politics.

zenmaster10665 11-03-2004 10:08 AM

I wish they had died.

irateplatypus 11-03-2004 10:18 AM

hilariously expected. thanks for the article.

aliali 11-03-2004 12:33 PM

Instead of dying, they can just get out. It will only take about a year to get into Canada. http://www.reuters.com/newsArticle.j...toryID=6704292

Booboo 11-03-2004 12:45 PM

I forget where I heard this information, and dont really feel like looking for it right now. But apparently only 30% of the whole vote or die campaign thing actually voted. thought that was kind of funny... and also sad. I'm sure if someone looks they can find something.

SecretMethod70 11-03-2004 12:52 PM

I seriously.....can't stand celebrities getting involved in politics. Save for the occassional intelligent involvement.

Kalibah 11-03-2004 12:54 PM

as if its a suprise how they voted ( and where)

cali didnt need any more liberals - wouldnt have mattered

Yeah...I could just imagine 50cent fitting right in living in Winnipeg.

BTW, we don't want 'em. Thanks anyway :icare:

Loved the Cooper commercials, and he's so right on. Just like in everything, pick and choose who you take advice from. Celebrities are definately not one to be listened to.

yournamehere 11-03-2004 02:43 PM

The sad thing is how right they were.
With such a disgusting turnout for 18-29 year olds (did I read 17%?), the election was in their hands and they failed to rise to the occasion.
Quite sad.

Edited later - I stand corrected, and misunderstood earlier today. I have since discovered that the actual turnout for 18-29 year olds was a very respectable 51% (the highest ever), and up to 64% in some of the swing states.

Good job, young'uns

And even later: I get so many conflicting reports on the youth vote, I don't know what to believe any more. It's water under the bridge, anyway. It's gonna be a long time till 2008.

Secret did a pretty good breakdown of that point in a different thread:

I don't even have to look at the statistics to tell you that people 18-25 are not more than, say, 20% of people 18-DEAD.

17% for young voters is pretty decent turnout. Think about this. It was 17% of MORE VOTERS OVERALL. So, voters 17-25 saw the same sharp increase in voter turnout that EVERY OTHER AGE GROUP DID. Go figure, other age groups might be more interested in this election too

psyday 11-03-2004 02:50 PM

Somehow this doesn't even shock me in the least.

It is sad the low turnout of young voters though. Maybe there aren't as many of them watching MTV as they thought, and that can't be a bad thing. We just need to figure out where they are and get them in the polls. ;)

MikeyChalupa 11-03-2004 02:56 PM

I always read "Vote KERRY or Die" on those shirts.

Nickelodeon's "Nag the Vote" probably had better results.

i don't know, it made for a really funny south park!

This thread was both interesting and funny. Just shows you celebs do what is hip for the times or whatever will boost their record sales. Word to your mother.

that's really funny.

I'm a little divided on the celebrity participation. On one hand, I think it's a good thing that they're trying to do their part to campaign for democracy. But on the other hand, I want to call out some bullshit flags... Half those celebs posing in those Vote or Die shirts probably aren't informed or don't care about the issues. They just need some hot, "popular" artist who has a good body and slab that on a print ad because sex sells. Politics has definitely come to the point where candidates are a packaged image being voted on as if they were two products to choose from, and not just PEOPLE with different views on issues. The packaged celebrity ads mirror this.

Celebrities like Leonardo DiCaprio who just talk openly about the issues and their opinions is a good thing for our country, IMO. People like Oprah who do an entire show on empowering women to vote, etc. Those are the celebs I would admire.

Can someone please interpret the law for me in such a way that I am now legally permitted to kill each and every one of those celebs who did not vote?
