Do Americans care about what Canadians think about the election?
 

I was just wondering Americans care about their neighbours to the North when it comes to election time for them. Us Canadians were polled and 50% thought Kerry would make a better president, but we wouldn't really be better of with him as Canadians than with Bush. Something like 20% of Canadians polled thought Bush would be a better president. Does this influence your decision any?

Actually, my boyfriend is Canadian, and I travel there every 2-3 weeks. I've talked with him, his friends, and his family a bit about the election. Generally I'm not one to talk politics though, so it's usually not a long discussion. Funny though, when my boyfriend told his parents that he's dating an American, his dad asked "Is she voting for Bush?" That would have been a minus point for me ;)

I'll listen to what the Canadians I come across have to say, but will it sway how I'll vote? No. Just like an American can't sway my vote. I've listened to the debates, I've done my research, I've heard both sides and I've come to my decision. So I guess I'm saying that it won't influence my decision, but I keep it in mind :)

No. Nor should it. While we may be curious, interested, or even concerned what opinion Canadians, or the world for that matter, may have of us, in the end it has to be our own interests that influence our decision making.

I actually do care what the world as a whole thinks about the country I love....but my "caring" has little influence on my choice of candidates. That said, I really hope we look better to Canada on Nov, 3rd than we did on Nov, 2nd.

I would guess if you thought about, "Do I care how Americans feel about Canadian politics", then you would get a pretty accurate idea of the reverse.

As a Canadian I can't see why it would matter a fig. I certainly don't care if Americans pay attention to our elections.

Foreign policy on the other hand is an entirely different matter...

Excellent point. If 80% of the world, including your closest allies, fear your foreign policy...then somethings obviously wrong with it. That should be about the only outside influence that influences any decision making.

In Canada's last federal election both Ralph Nader and Micheal Moore spoke publicly in Canada in support of specific parties. Pissed me off royaly! Even tho I supported the candidate they were touting I would rather they just STFU and let us do our thing.

While it would be great if Americans voted for the candidate that would be most beneficial to Canada (I don't know who that would be btw), you guys really need to put your own needs first. I won't even touch the forgien policy issue as it pertains to Canada tho, that's a whole other thread.

I think a lot of Americans care what Canadians think. Heck, Canada may be our next state. Hopefully French isn't the national language by then, LOL.

I care about Mexico too, and many other countries which are friendly to us. The rest, you don't want to know.

As stated above, for issues on foreign policy, most certainly. We should listen to everyone that cares to make an opinion (which, IMO, we don't currently practice).

For domestic issues... I don't feel it will influence my vote, but it's nice to have alternative perspectives on things.

If I find myself agreeing with the majority of the canadian populace, it makes me seriously re-evaluate my position to see where I went wrong so that I can correct my cranio-rectal inversion.

Not to be a dick, but no... and on the flipside I no zero about Canadian politics. Canada is not a politically strong enough country to worry about. I know more of British and Japanese politics than Canadian. Nothing personal...

Of course Americans don't care what Canadians think, just as Canadians don't care what Americans think about our policy. Who in their right mind actually thought they did care?

I hate to beat a dead horse...but this is exactly right.

I really don't care what Canada thinks. Just keep exporting the Labatts. I'm going to go out on a limb and take a guess that American industries, namely the RIAA and MPAA along with a few members of congress with their idea of policing the internet have more of a negative impact on Canadians than Bush Doctrine against terrorism.

Sorry, but I must admit the thought of Canadians and my Presidential vote never crossed.

Nothing against you guys, but it is and should be an internal decision. We are not supposed to be electing the guy that will please the world the most, just the guy that will lead our country the best in our own interests. However, the candidate's foreign policy is part of that decision too.

Nope, not Canada nor the rest of the world.
I lived in Europe for a while, and I have traveled quite a bit. I used to believe that the U.S. should act in the best interest of every other country. Then I found out that it wouldn't matter. Those that hate us will continue to hate us. We can only do what we think is moral (yes, I dare use the "M" word) and in the best interest of the United States.
