Im a little lost on this

If martyrdom is dying for ones religion
And martyrdom gets oneself 70 odd virgins, honey, etc.

Why don't we just hand out tickets to a Marytrdom SuperBowl so to speak
We kill them in a giant arena - bloodsports of the 21st Century

They get their ride to 'allah'
We get peace
The deviant get entertainment

Seriously though? If suicide bombers rationale is to get into heaven- why skirt around the issue???

Im sorry if this is off on a tagent / etc.
Im hyped on cafienee and I had this magnificent revalation and thought I'd share

I believe you have to kill an infidel, and if you happen to die while doing so, there is your ticket straight up. I think if you kill an infidel in the month of (July?) you also get a free ride. Its been a long time since I've read up on it, don't take my word for it.

In any case, if you were told that by killing one of your enemies and dying at the same time you would go straight to heaven, and this is what you really believed, you would have a much easier time understanding why they do it. Its all about perspective, they believe they are doing something good, not bad, and they feel they are justified no matter how twisted and unreasonable the reasons seem to be to us.

That's a brilliant idea. Firebomb a church while you're at it so that all the Christians inside won't have to wait anymore to get into heaven. Also, kill as many babies as you possibly can so that they can get into heaven before sin leads them astray.

See, the subject was "Rational [sic] of a suicide bomber". Is this church you speak of filled w/ suicide bombers? The babies you speak of, were they grown on a suicide-bomber farm somewhere bred to be the best of the best?

Here is an interesting tidbit my muslim friend told me.

When a muslim male goes to heaven he gets 72 virgins. But the funny thing is the word they translated to virgin is also the same word they use for raisins.

So they may just get a plate of 72 rasins....

Um... the whole point, definition, and cause of martyrdom is that you die... FOR A CAUSE... not just die doing whatever. If Jesus Christ slipped on a puddle of Holy water while stepping out of the bathtub, we Christians would likely not even know about him.

If anything at all, we'd have an additional commandment, "thou shalt have a bath mat".

I don't suppose it much matters; the implication seemed to be that "real life" doesn't matter to these people, and I'm sure it does for the same reasons it does to Christians or anyone else who believes in an afterlife. They're giving their life for a cause, not just to go to heaven, or so I'd assume.

Now, wacky non-religious guy that I am, I actually think it's sort of cool that they actually do something for their special slice of paradise instead of just whining and getting eaten by lions, but that's a whole different wild stray post.

Funny about that raisin/virgin thing, I would've thought that grapes would be the virgins.

Incidentally, does anyone know why we have prune juice but not plum juice?

Suicide bombing is basically brainwashing in the name of religion. It is started at a very young age and these children grow up thinking that this is the way it should be. Adults can really screw up a child's mind very easily and most of the time, it is extremely difficult to undo later in life. Abused children many times show different types of irrational behavior that is difficult for those that have not gone through the same brainwashing to understand why they think that way. For example, when you were a child if 90% of the population (especially those you trust most) told you that the color yellow was actually green, you would not give up that idea very easily. Children learn values by those that surround them, right or wrong.

Nothing against the religion, as I'm sure that many in that religion do not believe that is correct.
