Bush only can see the world from one perspective. If you have seen Fahrenheit 9/11, you will remember this one.

"You are the haves and have mores. Some call you the elite. I call you my base."

How can someone that says that truly represent our country?

I think that statemenst says more about Bush and his motives than anything he has said at the debates. I sure wish that statement would be mentioned at the debates.

Terryjim, that is a crock of shit. Bush was speaking at a bi-partisan fundraiser, one that Al Gore was at in fact. He wasn't even in office at the time.

That's why they call Moore a "spin doctor".

Another Bush joke is presented as an obvious joke, although important context is missing. Near the end of the movie, Bush speaks to a tuxedoed audience. He says, "I call you the haves and the have-mores. Some call you the elite; I call you my base." The joke follows several segments in which Bush is accused of having started the Iraq war in order to enrich business. As far the movie audience can tell, Bush is speaking to some unknown group of rich people. The speech actually comes from the October 19, 2000, Alfred E. Smith Memorial Foundation Dinner. The 2000 event was the 55th annual dinner, which raises money for Catholic hospital charities in New York City. Candidates Bush and Gore were the co-guests of honor at the event, where speakers traditionally make fun of themselves.

Bush delivered his "haves" joke on camera three weeks before the 2000
election. In contrast to the joke that Bush told, Gore said the following:

"Gore joked, "The Al Smith Dinner represents a hallowed and important tradition, which I actually did invent." Lampooning his promise to put Social Security in a "lock box," Gore promised that he would put "Medicare in a walk-in closet," put NASA funding in a "hermetically sealed Ziploc bag" and would "always keep lettuce in the crisper.".................. (CBS News story on the same event.)"

Moore went on to use the footage of Bush in his movie. Doing so is apparently offensive to Mojo_PeiPei.

Bush went on to "accomplish" this: (Just a coincidence for his "base" ?)

Tax Burden Shifts to the Middle
Presidential Campaigns Draw Differing Conclusions From Report

By Jonathan Weisman
Washington Post Staff Writer
Friday, August 13, 2004; Page A04

Since 2001, President Bush's tax cuts have shifted federal tax payments from the richest Americans to a wide swath of middle-class families, the Congressional Budget Office has found, a conclusion likely to roil the presidential election campaign.

The CBO study, due to be released today, found that the wealthiest 20 percent, whose incomes averaged $182,700 in 2001, saw their share of federal taxes drop from 64.4 percent of total tax payments in 2001 to 63.5 percent this year. The top 1 percent, earning $1.1 million, saw their share fall to 20.1 percent of the total, from 22.2 percent.

Over that same period, taxpayers with incomes from around $51,500 to around $75,600 saw their share of federal tax payments increase. Households earning around $75,600 saw their tax burden jump the most, from 18.7 percent of all taxes to 19.5 percent.

The analysis, requested in May by congressional Democrats, echoes similar studies by think tanks and Democratic activist groups. But the conclusions have heightened significance because of their source, a nonpartisan government agency headed by a former senior economist from the Bush White House, Douglas Holtz-Eakin. The study will likely stoke an already burning debate about the fairness and efficacy of $1.7 trillion in tax cuts that the president pushed through Congress.

"CBO is nonpartisan, it's independent, and right now it works for a Republican Congress with a former Bush economist at its head," said Jason Furman, economic director of the presidential campaign of Sen. John F. Kerry (D-Mass.). "There's no higher authority on the subject." http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A61178-2004Aug12.html
Bush's tax shift from the wealthy to the middle class, and his $422 billion
deficit, which is a bill that he will leave for our children to figure out how to
pay off, is offensive to me, and should also be for the vast majority of
Americans.

I want more clarification on the lumber company thing. From the description of the company on factcheck.org it makes me think they sell trees not lumber. It sounds more like a nursery to me. And Jesus Pimp is on a roll here with the graphics. LOL.

I'm not sure why any of that is important. The point is, according to Bush-logic, he is a small business owner and would have his taxes increased in Kerry's plan solely due to $84. It's a Bush-lie to paint Kerry's plan as taxing hundreds of thousands of people, when in fact it does not.

That Bush was simply oblivious of his own finances and how they include him in his campaigns' false analysis of Kerry's plan is just the manifestation of his pure ignorance.

There really should be a lot more stink in the media about the timber comment by Bush. It was rude and uncalled for and to make things worse he flat out lied. It came down to Kerry made a very valid point and the only thing Bush could do is Deny Deny Deny, and to make it worse he decided to be very immature about it insulting every American watching the debate. Kerry did not miss-represent any facts about the timber company.

I guess it has always been Bush's policy "attack first don't ask questions later"

The thing I hated most about Bush's tactics in this debate was that he tried to make everything a black or white issue. Kerry either did or didn't vote for certain bills, he's either for or against abortion, etc. Kerry tried to explain, for example, that he is against partial birth abortion except in those rare cases where the mother's life will be in danger or their is rape/incest, but Bush came right back with "he didn't vote against it, so that mean's for it."

Overall, I think Bush is a smart man who purposely caters to the stupid and the ignorant. I think it's dangerous to think that Bush is stupid...he's not. But he knows who votes him, and that's the wealthy and the dumb.

I'd have to agree with that, derwood. I believe kerry even called him on it saying the issue wasn't that simple, not that black and white...

it's either that, or bush genuinely doesn't understand any of the nuances of anything he's done...

The big thing my wife (who isn't what you'd call "up on politics") noticed was that Kerry was very level headed throughout while Bush was very defensive and reactionary.
