Republican or Democrat: Where do you think most TPFer's fall?
Don't vote according to what you are but what you feel MOST TFPers are.
So if you feel you're the sole voice of the left among many right wingers (probably not likely, but just an example) put Republican. If you feel the board leans left, if only slight, put Democrat. You get the picture. I have the indie/other option if you feel that most TFPer's are something, anything, other than a Donkey or Elephant (like say an ostrich, or a panda bear).... |

There have been several threads that poll the membership, such as this one:
http://www.tfproject.org/tfp/showthr...ervative+scale In very general terms, the majority of our membership is liberal.

While that's true, a poll on membership perception of OTHERS is a bit different than a poll of one's own political ideology. It presents a whole different set of information to work with theoretically.
I remember one time in choir, we took a sort of evaluation thing (not the standard one though) and answered how hard we thought we worked and then how hard we thought others worked on average. The results were interesting mainly because of the second question. Apparently, according to almost everyone in the choir, no one worked harder than they did. So, everyone worked the hardest, but no one worked hard. Quite the paradox. It's interesting to see the ACTUAL numbers of how many are liberal/conservative/other, but the perception is completely different. Maybe the numbers say there are more liberals, but for some reason most people feel TFP is mostly conservative. Or vice versa. I'm curious about the results personally.

Yes. It would seem to be a natural result of the results of this thread as well:
http://www.tfproject.org/tfp/showthr...light=your+age Perhaps in this instance, facts aren't the point. But it would seem clear and obvious to me even if I had no numbers to refer to.

It seems that most people on the internet appear to be libertarian in belief, even though they are Democrats or Republicans in name. In reality, very few seem to uphold those beliefs, and most fall at either the far ends or close to the middle

I've certainly found many threads to have a strangely conservative bent (and I'm in no way far left), so I was curious as to other people's perceptions of the board. Honestly, I probably should of put liberal or conservative up there instead of Republican or Democrat. |

It's hard to say - does this include the non-American members?
That's why I voted for independant/other - all foreign members, non-aligned Americans, and I'm seeing a few Libertarians kicking around too.

I have no idea what I would be in USA but in Europe I'm a social democrat with a heavy leftist slant as our SDs have been drifting to the right lately. I'd see myself as a liberal on personal freedoms and pretty strict on economical ones.
I'd probably vote a democrat. I could think that (I hope) most TFPers are democrats, even if I know that many people here are republicans.

my impression of this place is that overall the leaning is to the (using terms in the American sense) Liberal/left with with a decent showing of moderates.
Personally my views are very conservative but I would strongly disavow labels like 'republican' or anything else very quickly. Only a mindless sheep blindly follows a 'party line' when voting for any level of offce and I can think of at least a few time when a 'democrat' would have had my vote before a 'republican'. In the case of the Kerry/Bush race, I am not a huge fan of Bush but I strongly disagree with Kerry so much more on key issues he supports like the gov't removing rapidly diminishing gun rights, taxes, and several other points .

I would think most people on tfp are independant, because it seems like we are independant in our thinking...
Im all about consistency when it comes to politics(and everything else for that matter)... What bothers me more than anything is inconsistencies. If you are going to do something do it all the way and do it right, or dont do it at all. For me anytime I get into a political discussion it always comes down to is that fair or not?... I dont know where I am going with that. I guess I am somewhere in the middle, I fall into libertarian for the most part. |

I suspect a lot of people in here are independent. I dont sense any love for politicians period. But, given the choice between Republican and Democrat, I think most people here would go Democrat, with a few notable exceptions.

Hi remember me
Most people on this board are not independent. They would like to say they are free thinkers or whatever, but they get their information from limited sources and are no different then the 'average' man on the street. Everyone likes to think they are intellectually superior to others even when they are being lead around by talking points that were manufactured in a focus group. I like to think I'm independent and intellectually superior as well. I get my information from as many sources as I can, I am a student of history, I don't listen to what people say as much as see what they do. Even so I just may be a slave to my personal philosophy and the only information I absorb be that which agrees with what I want to hear. I don't think I am, but I doubt even the thickest person reading this think they are either.

I have to admit I'm surprised at the ratio. Whilst I expected more Democrats, who in vast sweeping generalization tend to be more liberal minded and active in "open discussion" type communities such as TFP, I didn't expect there to be so few Republicans.

Perhaps they sneezed right as they were clicking and did not realize they clicked on Republican. Plus you have to consider, at least one of those votes is Strange Famous.
