There's no doubt going to be a string of kidnapping/beheadings going on in the middle east with the militants making absurd demands...

So why don't people wear some kind of self-detonating device that they can activate if they were to get kidnapped?

You figure either way, you're dead. If they kidnap you, chances that you'll get away/live are slim to none. Save yourself the torture in getting beheaded and blow yourself up... take them out with you.

Seems like a good way to make them think twice about kidnapping others.

Other than that, how else would you stop it?

Or simply carry a firearm (Read: Assault Rifle / SMG / Full-auto pistol) and shoot people trying to kidnap you. You will die, but a few of them will to. Also, I think those terrorists guys have the bomb clothing covered and wearing one of those bomb jackets is a good way to get mistaken for a terrorist.

As big brotherish as it sounds and as much as I would protest such a thing at home, maybe place a GPS chip in each military person over there in random places. So we can track where the kidnappers take them.

I know the consequences would be much protesting but something has to be done. Perhaps it will save lives we may get there before the kidnappers can do anything.

My biggest question is why is it so easy for them to get our troops?

Perhaps on a voluntary basis? It's not a bad idea, from what I can see. What about the cost, though. Is something like that cost effective? I know that I'd volunteer for it, because even if they couldn't rescue my ass...they can, at least, take the sorry sumbitches out after the fact.

Who cares about cost? Whats more important money or a man's life? I know most believe the money, but I don't care the price, a man's life is more valuable than all the money in the world. Especially one serving to protect us at home (whether we agree with the war or not).

Yeah.. i agree with others in that this is a pretty silly idea. The risks far outweigh the benefits. I think they should all just start protecting each other better. Where are most people when they've been kidnapped anyway? Why wasn't anyone else around?

I don't think GPS works like that. If the military uses the same satellite receiving technology that we civilians use, then the signal would be pretty hit or miss. It would be useless as soon as the kidnappers took the prisoners inside a cave, a building or even under a big enough tree.

However, the military often pioneers technology for purposes like this, so maybe they're already working on it.

That is true Supple Cow but you would know where you lost contact at their last location. I did some work with the latet avalible GPS / GSM module, without power suppy or antenna, it is 45mm x 25mm x 2.5mm It is small enough you could emplant on under the skin I would guess.

It'd be rather unpleasant to the hostage if the kidnappers started searching and removing them with knives.

I mean, it wouldn't probably be too hard to detect a module like that?
