Do You See the lines of People paying respects to President Reagan?

3 part question?
1. Who are they voting for in November?
2. Do you think ex Presidents Carter or Clinton would have as long lines as these?
3. Why is the mainstream press complaining so much about not being able to continue to Bash President Bush, while this is going on?

Superbelt 06-10-2004 04:44 AM

1. Who cares, look at the polling. It's not like his death all of a sudden converted these people from Hippies into Conservatives.

2. Yes.

3. WTF?

shakran 06-10-2004 04:49 AM

1. Who are they voting for in November?

I see. so if you go to someone's funeral you automatically are aligned with them, agree to everything they say, and would support anyone who claimed to be from the same group as the dead guy. Gotcha.

2. Do you think ex Presidents Carter or Clinton would have as long lines as these?

most likely.

3. Why is the mainstream press complaining so much about not being able to continue to Bash President Bush, while this is going on?

Who's been complaining. What "mainstream" press have you been reading. Hint: The Onion does not count.

Bill O'Rights 06-10-2004 04:52 AM

1. The candidate of their choice, would be my guess.

2. I imagine not. Then again, I didn't see as long a line for Nixon. Nor do I expect to see as long a line for either Bush. I beleive that it is the man that respect is being paid to, not his politics.

3. Haven't heard it...at all. Can you reference? So far, all I've heard is tribute to President Reagan. No complaining out the mainstream press.

I didn't support all of Reagan's political views, but I did, and still do, respect the man. He was a great leader, no matter which side of the fence you're sitting on. I was in the Air Force during his administration, and was proud to have him as my Commander in Chief. Keep in mind that my politics tend to lean a little to the left of moderate.

Let's just respect and mourn the man, without turning this into a Republican vs Democrat thing. For once.

Derwood 06-10-2004 05:29 AM

I think the coverage is ridiculous. Pre-empting normal programming to watch cars drive down the street for 30 minutes? Experts telling us about cars driving down the street?

I don't think Dubya would get this much press if he died tomorrow.

analog 06-10-2004 06:45 AM

1. Huh?
2. Most likely.
3. I'm curious where you saw that.

The sad thing is that we HAVE news channels who should really be able to just take care of these things themselves, but EVERYONE and their mother wants in on a piece of the pie, so you come back for their OTHER news coverage later. The only difference in coverage like this is who is talking. All the video is the same, regardless of the channel.

BoCo 06-10-2004 07:07 AM

1. Bush, most likely.
2. Absolutely not.
3. The leftist press hates Bush, so of course they hate the fact that they can't openly bash him for a few days, and that Reagan's death may revitalize Republicans and garner even more votes for Bush.

Paq 06-10-2004 09:10 AM

1. You can actually go to a funeral of a republican president and not be republican or vote for bush. So i'd say it's about 50/50, just like the normal population

2. Yes, definitely. Clinton's would have a much more diverse group of onlookers, more minorities and Carter is one of the presidents who went on to do great things for the community and world after his presidency, (habitat for humanity, etc) so his line would be just as strong. Also, there is just something about a presidential funeral that people want to attend. it's a moment in history, of passing, and people want to attend and be a part.

3. I haven't heard much from the liberal press, but i can say that there is much speculation of how bush will spin reagan's death into a way of bashing kerry and helping the republican ticket...

How about citing sources? Otherwise you look pretty foolish - as though you're just making shit up to prove your point.

Tomservo 06-10-2004 10:22 AM

1. Who are they voting for? Does it matter? I'd love to think that Americans can respect a dead President, and still make an informed decision come November. If Reagan were Bush, we would have invaded Russia... or at least Iran.

2. Yeah, I think Carter has earned all the respect he'll be given at his death with all his international peacekeeping efforts, even if they don't all work. Just about everyone respects Carter the MAN, if not Carter the President. Additionally, I think Clinton will have a huge outpouring of support when the time comes. History will remember 2 terms and his charm much more than it'll remember him banging some skank. Besides, we'll have much worse scandals by that time, I imagine.

3. You're nuts. Completely insane. CNN.com, widely considered to be a liberal news source, has had Reagan's death and funeral as its front page headline since it occured. Reagan has recieved equal and honorable attention from many differing sources, including many who wouldn't have agreed with his policies.

losthellhound 06-10-2004 10:52 AM

1. I dont think this is really going to change any minds
2. Carter might. He's done a tonne of peace work..
3. Umm.. wha? You do know that "The Daily Show" is a fake news source

Hahahahaha, no. Widely condidered to be liberal by people who watch Fox constantly perhaps, but CNN is generally considered moderate if not a tiny bit to the right. if you want to see a liberal media, I suggest you watch a few hours of BBC World News. They are a liberal by US standards and you will see a profound difference.

That has been your media bias calibration for the day, enjoy.

Well, in the US, those who watch Fox News are the same individuals who decry there's a liberal bias in "mainstream news media". CNN is consistently thrashed by those on the right as being liberal... my point was that CNN is definitely "mainstream media" and they've been showing Reagan coverage for nearly a week straight now. Of course, he's been dropped for Ray Charles now.

I don't need a lecture on liberal bias, I was quite aware when EVERY news source in the USA was running Ken Starr and Monica Lewinsky stories nonstop.. something the Bill O'Reillys of the world seem to forget.

matthew330 06-10-2004 04:32 PM

...our president got a blowjob by an intern - that's news, sorry he was liberal, but if he weren't he would have been a chauvanistic sex offender / borderline rapist to boot (considering his/her positions).

O'Reilly disagreed with some republican senator for mentioning Reagons policies saying that it puts a political spin on the issue, shying away people who would otherwise honor the man. Whoah!!, that's horrible. What a nasty republican on a nasty conservative network.

The republicans aren't pulling a family Wellstone and turning democrats away from the funeral screaming "WE WILL WIN!!!, WE WILL WIN!!"

kurtisj 06-10-2004 08:05 PM

a town 30 minutes from my own is dixon, his hometown. theres going to be a ridiculous meeting in a church(this town is relatively small)and expect thousands of people.

Thank you for that !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I stood on line yesterday and spoke to many poeple who came to honor a man and a president. Not once did I here about any election, other than memories of the one that brought him to Washington.
This is not about how many people came, or about how other leaders will be treated.
This is about a leader of our nation, and our respect for the presidency.
May God bless Ronald Wilson Reagan, and all who long to be free.

bouray 06-12-2004 07:37 AM

I wish people would stop putting such a political spin on this man's death. He was a president of the united states. His death really demands much respect be paid. He let office less than 16 years ago, so of course there are going to be many that want to pay their respects.

Each presidency has its own high and low points and there are going to be many supporters and detractors for each, but i think that each would have many people who want to show that respect at the time of their death.

As for as your questions, if you think that the 100,000's that are visiting his remains will be voting for bush, i guess that means that those that are not visiting are a lock to not vote for him.

Clinton and Carter---Clinton would have a strong minority response (something that is lacking for Reagan) at his funeral and Carter would have almost an equal response but many more people from throughout the world cuz of all he has done after his presidency.

The last question is just merely your attempt to, (stealing terms from Fark), troll and start a flamewar. Show some proof of this!

Sparhawk 06-12-2004 10:18 AM

It was a great funeral. Very poignant.

1. Who are they voting for in November? Well, statistically speaking, 50% of them aren't voting, and, of the other 50%, half are voting for the Democrat and half are voting for the Republican
2. Do you think ex Presidents Carter or Clinton would have as long lines as these? Why wouldn't they? Only your partisan blinders suggest that one President's death is more worthy of respect than another.
3. Why is the mainstream press complaining so much about not being able to continue to Bash President Bush, while this is going on? I haven't heard a single comment like this, and I've been glued to CNN, FOXNEWS, MSNBC, Jim Lehrer, and others ALL WEEK, along with all the editorials and opinions the WashPost puts out.

It's really easy for you to complain about this supposed leftist press when it's not possible to be more right-wing than you. Sure, it's leftist in comparison, but most national media is moderate to moderate-right from an objective viewpoint.

I have no idea where you got this idea from, as I've been keeping an eye on the news for the past week, and this just isn't happening. Nevermind that not much Bush-bashing goes on regularly, but there is no complaining happening about the inability to do so.
