State Avg. IQ and who they voted for in 2000

Don't know if anyone else has seen this yet but I thought it would be an interesting subject for discussion. First of all, what does everyone make of these "average state IQ" scores, and secondly what if anything do they have to do with the way in which people vote?

This info is bogus. Where did you get this from? Theonion.com?

I'm left-wing and all, but if I may play devil's advocate, this whole thing seems pretty specious to me.
First of all, the idea behind an IQ test is finding a way to measure an individual's reasoning ability against the population average. If you use it to compare different populations, the most you'd be doing is showing the societal bias behind the particular IQ test you were using. The states that scored higher, on average, seem to be more urban states with more college towns; in other words, the people who designed this quasi-experimental study in the first place.
And anyway, whatever your IQ is, you're equally entitled to vote for whomever you think represents you the best. Even if this test were really some way of showing one state as being "smarter" than another, so what?

assilem 05-27-2004 01:18 PM

Publius, are you trying to piss off all of the republicans and conservatives here? You’re doing a great job. Do you really believe that we are all just a bunch of dumb fuck hicks? Can you please post the link that these "numbers" came from?

reconmike 05-27-2004 01:25 PM

You have to be kidding with this right?

Let's go to the map.

http://www.2000gop.com/countymap.jpg

Seems to me that the areas that voted for Gore have the highest HOOD (edited due to the liberal spelling police) population. Did your little site take into account their IQ's?
Unless Crack dealing is on the test I think its alittle wacked out.

rsl12 05-27-2004 01:26 PM

as much as I'd like to believe that your average Bush supporter is not as intelligent as your average Gore supporter, I have a hard time believing that the average IQ of Mississippi is 85!! That is an extraordinarily low number. I've never been to Mississippi for any extended period of time, but to think that, over such a large area that the average could be that low is hard to believe. I would love to see the source of this list. Sample IQ questions would also be nice to see--I don't really buy into this 'urban-white' bias business, but seeing the questions would definitely help prove your point, at least in my eyes.

While we're talking in stereotypes, the red areas on that map have the highest trailer trash/redneck population.

And you spelled Ghetto wrong. Not that that means anything.

My thoughts exactly.

No stereotyping at all, the largest gHetto population is in these areas.

Why would democrats have to bus people to the polls?

rsl12 05-27-2004 01:39 PM

reconmike--your implication is that people who live in ghettos are less intelligent than average. Tell me if this isn't what you were implying.

stldickie 05-27-2004 01:44 PM

No way any state, even Mississippi, has an average IQ as low as 85

rsl12 05-27-2004 01:45 PM

side note: It's interesting to see on the map the line of blue following along the mississippi river. Just a random thought.

Zeld2.0 05-27-2004 01:59 PM

Great way to start stereotyping

So all Gore supporters are now crack addicts and all Bush supporters are rednecks and trailer trash?

And FYI most of those blue areas on the map consist of far more people than maybe a lot of the red areas combined so it means little

Can I just say DOH! Thats what I get for not checking a source before posting it here. Had a friend show these figures to me today while I was at work and found them interesting wanted to post them so that I would have something to talk about tonight once I got home.....shit. Well anyway looks like we got lots of responses and thats always good. Oh btw, according to Mensa the average IQ on most tests is suppose to be around 90 - 100 so this list seems if anything a little top heavy. Course, I personally dont put any credit into IQ tests because I view them as a tool of the establishment to keep people down, and with a supposed IQ in the 160's I should know. (sarcasim for those who take me literaly)

What in the hell are your talking about? The reason for your post was to illustrate some kind correlation between being republican and being RETARDED! Go back and read the rules. I've been an asshole sometimes here on the TFP, but come on man.

And it’s not about how many replies you get?

*Shakes head sorrowfully*

Unfortunately, this has been making the rounds of the left wing blogs and mailing lists. Liberals will sit back smugly asserting that they are intellectually superior, making it all the more ironic that they had to make up the data to support it.

Steven Sailer has exhaustively debunked this here.

Zeld2.0 05-27-2004 06:46 PM

Yawn more trashing and insults

This thread needs to be locked

Hmm ... well again like I said I got suckered on this one because I didn't check the source and it was an email sent to my friend, so mistake on my part. Second, and just so I make this clear, it was not my intention to blame republicans for being "retarded" unless of course you think voting for Bush was a retarded thing to do., in which case I would fit that catagory as well. (oh here is a big shocker for some, I voted for BUSH! damn now dont that beat all?) I honesty thought this would be a good discussion topic but since it has turned out now to be, I say let it die... (a slow and long whiny death now doupt)

boatin 05-27-2004 11:44 PM

The bogus poll is useless. But I'm curious about the point of the map. There is no questions that the land mass is mostly red. But Gore did win the popular vote. Do we care more about the empty space than numbers of people?

reconmike 05-28-2004 04:27 AM

Here are some numbers from the map:
Population of counties won Bush 143 million, Gore 127 million.

Economic growth Bush 14% Gore 5%

Murder per 100,000 people in counties won Bush 2.1, Gore 13.2

What I care about is that the big cities do not control who runs this country.

Viking1064 05-28-2004 05:32 AM

It is extremely obvious that this is a hoax just by using some logic. If Mississippi has an AVERAGE IQ of 85, that mean 50% of the population there is below 85. I have never been to Mississippi, but I do not have to be an idiot to realize there is no way that is possible.

Not entirely true... if Mississippi simply had a huge population of mentally retarded individuals the average would be lowered without half of the state population being lower than 85. You are correct in saying that they're obviously bogus though.

Random thought: anybody else having trouble believing that Publius has an IQ of 160.

Brillant!

Closed due to bullshit "information" that didn't even come from a source.

Also, the flaming nonsense that afterwards ensued.

Link to your sources, people. If i'd caught this eariler, it'd have never stayed.
