It's a pretty common theme that people hate what they don't understand. Get informed and active rather than hating an abstract entity. |
*sigh*
Don't these guys have anything better to do than to stick their noses in the crotch of every woman in Georgia? |
It seems to me the concern was more to do with cliterodecomies or female genitle mutilation as some folks like to call it. Some jackass added the peircing ammendment which was not the original focus of the bill. I am sure thats why it got such wide support.

I am curious as to how ANYONE can support this. I mean it is laughable. I heard it on Stern and thought it was a joke.
Let's see......... we're losing jobs, education is in the shitter, we are at war, the government is in debt, veteran's are losing benefits, healthcare is getting outrageously high, and on and on. Guess the State of Ga. feels they don't have enough control over people and this will show the people who is boss. Just can't believe those men and women in Ga.'s government have finally decided to make sure we don't desecrate our bodies any further. THANK YOU, THANK YOU FOR LOOKING OUT FOR US. I guess it makes sense to prohibit women from piercing their genitalia, everyone sees those parts not like they are hidden by clothing. I mean, why not? Everyone knows pierced genitals lead to promiscuity and pornography and dare we even say it, prostitution. So what if my wife moves to Ga. and she goes to her new Gyno and he sees she has some labia bars and a butterfly tatoo, does he by law have to report her as a criminal? Does she get tried or just thrown into jail? Does the piercing artist here in Ohio get extradited and tried also? The government only acts in our best interest though so we should never question any law they pass. |
It's a pretty reasonable law. Bobaphat seems to have it right, they were trying to prevent parents from lopping off their daughters' clits and/or sewing up their vaginas. Someone likely thought that piercing was part of the process.

My complaint is of course with politicians that make laws w/o knowing what they are talking about or what the laws will really do. |
Wow, it's like you've been saving up for weeks that. Thanks for an informative and insightful troll/flame. Amazing that you were able to do both with one post. A credit to you and your style. Kudos.
As far as reasonable, you are one hundred percent incorrect. Lopping off clits and sewing up vagina's are worth preventing undoubtedly, however "THINKING" that piercings fall into this catagory is lunacy. Including this in the legislation preventing it is stupidity. Nothing what-so-ever reasonable about it. -bear |

For the record, I think the unamended bill is fine, although the GA legislature could be doing other things with their time. The amendment is just ignorance. |

Cheers, -bear |
The amendment slipped under the radar. Happens all the time, is why you have 2 houses of government, each of which checks over what the other one does.

three cheers for riders..
Although the law had a very good start, as always, things get out of proportion.. |
no kiddin...
sheesh i mean, outlawing clitorodectomies is one thing, well and good, outlawing FGM is great, all for it but to slip in "piercings" as well..cmon then again, parts of SC have laws against tatoo parlors, so sheesh. everyone i know goes to NC to get them. I'm not sure if larger cities in SC have them or not. |
My question and forgive my stupidity BUT WHO the fuck has their daughters clit chopped off or sewn up? Is it like a circumcision?
Boggles my mind that this would happen in this day and age. But if it is truly some religious fanaticism then the law no matter how well intentioned will be overturned. What's to prevent these weirdos from just going to a surrounding state? Never heard of such a thing, damn weirdos. |
it's more prevelant among some african tribes, look up female genital mutilation. if you want a brief descript, here goes
near the age of 13/14, sometimes up to 16, a young lady is taken by her grandmother or mother or just ladies from the tribe. They go to a private area away from the site and hold teh lady down, razors or sharpened rocks (seriously) are used to cut the clitoris and hood off. This is to keep sexual urges down (again, seriously). Now, the procedure can go one of two ways. Either, they can simply sew up the labia leaving a small opening for blood and urine to pass OORRR, they can scrape the insides of the labia with sharpened stones and then sew them up. If they scrape and sew, the scar tissue forms and completely closes off the areas that were sewn. This is supposed to ensure virginity until marriage when the husband has the pleasure of breaking the seal, so to speak. Actually, it's more like tearing the tissue apart and ensures that the woman is loyal/etc. Now, i have given the procedure described in anthro textbooks. Modern age has brought about remotely more sterile ways fo performing this procedure, but it's still a horrible disfigurement. However, it is still a very deeply ingrained tradition in some communities, so much so that the mother/grandmother insists that it be done to the daughter. I don't understand it, but then again, i'm a peace/free love loving hippy at times :) the thing that gets me is that i don't really recall any accounts of it being performed in georgia. one of the few american cases i have heard about was when a nurse from a southern country in Africa was being examined for severe cramps, etc. The examining dr was pretty shaken by what he saw and she thought it was totally normal. Other than that, i don't really see it as an american tradition/case at all. I think standard clitordectomies MAY be performed..rarely. I'm not seeing it as a major concern, at least not enough to pass a full law against it. Hmm..just google female genital mutilation here are some decent links: http://www.amnesty.org/ailib/intcam/femgen/fgm1.htm http://www.religioustolerance.org/fem_cirm.htm http://www.cirp.org/pages/female/ |
Paq's got the procedure down. The surprising thing, to me, was that women are the ones perpetuating it. One of the clearest cases of what anth/soc people call internalizing one's oppresion.
It's actually quite prevelent in the US. Immigrants who live in the states either fly their children back home, but usually just import a doctor to conduct the procedure. As far as I know, no US doctor would perform the surgery since it would b considered child abuse by our legal system. The fact that it happens in the medical black market is why it's off the radar--not because it doesn't occur. One of the strangest parts about this is that only like two (I guess three now) states specifically outlaw the practice. |
