Why I deserve reperations
For many years people like me have been discriminated against, forced to hide who they were and live in world that was not their choice. They were forced to do things on a day to day basis under the fear of being beaten or ridiculed. It is only fair that people like me should get some sort of reperations for the years of harsh treatment by the government and others.
The worst part is people like me do not get any protections from afirmative action or other protections from descrimination. People discriminate us and don't even notice. Even today in our society there is descrimination against my people. Everywhere I go I see some form of discrimination. Every time I try to use a scissors or a can opener I am reminded of this descrimination. Every time i walk into a computer lab or try to drive a stick shift. Even when I go look at guitars. The descrimination is everywhere. That's right I'm left handed, left-handers before me were forced to write right handed for many years. Being left handed was a sign of the devil. The world is designed for right handers it is time we left handers stand up for our rights and take back from those right handers. |
Yes the man is trying to bring us lefthanders down, DAMN THE MAN!!!

I remember when I had to take the ACT's I was stuck in a small lecture hall that had the fold up table tops. Needless to say the table tops were designed for right handers and of course I didn't do nearly as well as I should have on the test. Perhaps I should be able to say i'm a minority on applications because i'm left handed. Being left handed has obviously hurt my education. I was unable to use the scissors during arts and crafts days!!!

It is all about adaptation. In the end us lefties are stronger.
|
We're the only ones in our right mind.
|
I saw some statistic once that left-handed people live an average of nine years less than righties. Poor bastards. Show me a bill and I'll sign it...

Power to the lefties. We should start our own movement and revolutionary army. Viva la revolution!!
|
Become ambidextrous, I did....
(meanwhile, my left and right are fighting which is more dominate at times.....) Oneof my ex's was left-handed AND red-headed... She caught it bad.... |
Lefties Rule,
Righties Drool. |
Now that I have let this satire sit here a few days I think I’ll draw a few parallels from it.... you all took this as a joke (as well you should have) but there is some striking resemblance between my joke above and the arguments for affirmative action. I myself was never forced to be right handed but many people were, in doing so these people had to struggle greatly in order to live in a right handed world as a left hander. Today there are still many things that are right-handed in the world that left-handers have to deal with. A can opener is one of my favorite examples, I have never found a left handed can opener (but some probably exist).
Left-handers typically have far worse hand writing than right-handers because left-handers cannot see what they are writing without arching their wrist greatly. In many ways left-handers are at a disadvantage to right-handers. But this does not mean left-handers deserve compensation. Is there anyone alive today that was a slave within the USA? No. Just because your great-great-grandpa was a slave does that mean you deserve money from the people today or special treatment? No. If we give reparations to people because of their ancestors, people who have lefthanded-forced-to-be-righthanded-ancesters in their family line should also get reparations. After all, their grandparent wasn’t as well off as he should have been because they had to struggle with their left-handed disability (or possession by Satan as so many believed). If you think people should get preferential treatment today because they are a minority and since they are a minority they can’t compete up to the level of the majority (which I don’t believe in for a second) then shouldn’t left-handers of today get special treatment also? After all, they have to struggle every day. I can’t handwrite anything because my handwriting is that of a 4th grader, I can’t submit a document to an employer in that handwriting. Now I’m not trying to say that left-handers have been greatly discriminated against and I’m not trying to say that it compares to slavery and civil-rights, but the arguments are the same. Affirmative Action is a dangerous road to go down and one I feel we should avoid instead of treating the symptom of minorities being underrepresented lets treat the problem and bring the qualifications of people from the inner cities up to that of the suburbs by increasing their education, teaching them values (not violence). Let’s stop distinguishing people by their skin color and start looking at them as people. |
At least we have toll booths favor us.

rather sinister thread....

I didn't take your post as a joke. If you can show economic harm, and you can demonstrate the entity who caused you economic harm still exists, then you ought to be compensated for that harm. Fairly simple legal construct--I hope you can understand it now that you've created this allegory. |

How gauche.
You will get nothing and like it. |
I will symbolically go left-handed all week for your plight.

I know people who are still alive today that are left-handers but schools, churches, ect forced them to be right. We still have schools and churches.
Now i'm not trying to prove that I have been harmed ect. But we don't make people prove that they were harmed in order to claim afirmative action now do we? |
and now those of you who are firm believers in afirmative action answer this one question, since schools, buisness, ect sometimes have quotas on the percent of their employees/students that are minorties shouldn't there be a push for the NBA or NFL to have simalar quota's for white people? Or should NBA/NFL be based of qualifications only?
|
i see what you're saying rekna. what is even more ludicrous is the NFL's recent push to have teams hire black coaches.
|
What my points are is first reperations are rediculious because people who were slaves are not around today, people who owned slaves are not around today. Why should someone be punished for a crime they did not commit.
Second, people should be hired, accepted, ect on merit and only merit. If there is a problem with inner city peoples qualifications (not just minorities, which i believe there is) then we need to put more funding into those inner cities schools. If there is a problem with people sterotyping (which there is both ways) then we need to put forward more effort to educating people in diversity and acceptance. Seperating people into two groups only causes more racism and predjudice. |

How's this for you Rekna, I'm a lefty, but through out life I've learned to do many things right handed, use a mouse, play guitar, use scissors, and many more. In our society you can see many people of african-american, asian-american, and of any other decent that have made a very good life for themselves and their family. |
....yeah, but their "uncle tom's."
|
I figured this was probably a race-baiting thread when it first appeared. It wins the disingenuous award.
|
when tourists ask me where to get a good lobster dinner - i tell them this place i can't stand and make sure they order left handed lobsters because the meat is sweeter - drives the cooks crazy

Awww...that's so mean. And i'm still confused as to why you all want reperations. You're left handed, you're evil, you've got the devil inside of you! We shouldn't give you money! we should force you to write right handed until we've killed the vile evilness that resides within you all! HA! |
