Rep. Brown: Latinos and Whites 'All Look Alike to Me'

Can you imagine the nationwide media uproar if a Republican congressman said Hispanics and whites "all look alike to me"? But this comment came from a Democrat, so it's probably news to you.

U.S. Rep. Corrine Brown, D-Fla., apologized Thursday for her racist remarks.

Her outburst came Wednesday during a briefing on Haiti with Florida's congressional delegation and Assistant Secretary of State Roger Noriega, a Mexican-American. The congresswoman, who is black, sat across from Noriega and launched a diatribe against President Bush.

She claimed it was Republican leaders who were "racist" in their policies toward the failed black Caribbean nation, and she called the president's representatives "a bunch of white men."

After her rant, Noriega responded that he would relay her comments to Secretary of State Colin Powell and National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice.

'Branded a White Man'

Fox News reported today that participants in the meeting said Noriega later told Brown, "As a Mexican-American, I deeply resent being called a racist and branded a white man."

Brown said in a pseudo-apology Thursday: "I sincerely did not mean to offend Secretary Noriega or anyone in the room. Rather, my comments, as they relate to 'white men,' were aimed at the policies of the Bush administration as they pertain to Haiti, which I do consider to be racist."

U.S. Rep. Mark Foley, a Florida Republican who organized the meeting, called Brown's comments "disappointing."

"To sit there and browbeat this man who is a Mexican-American and call him names, it was inappropriate," he said.
Now I never use NewMax as a primary source, but this is the first I've heard of this. I just find it amusing how democrats get passes on blatantly racist comments but if a Republican says anything that can be evenly remotely considered racist its headline news.

It must be that darn liberal media.

*shakes his fist*
"I LOST ANOTHER ACCOUNT TO GEICO AND THE LIBERAL MEDIA!!!"

On a serious note, she isn't exactly the house majority leader. What she said was moronic, but c'mon if the secretary of education can call the nea a terrorist organization and get a pass this has to be in the same ballpark as that.

Hahahaha. God damn geico..

Anyways, I think white people should start viciously beating anyone who offends our proud white-tastic heritige. People are starting to doubt our awesomeness.

I just did a quick search on Google News and found this story all over the place(SF Chronicle, Guardian, AJC). Not sure where you got the idea that she's getting a pass.
As far as the remarks themselves, maybe I'm missing something, but I don't see anything racist about them. She didn't say all Hispanics look alike to her, which would be stupid and racist. She said that whites and Hispanics look alike to her, which is often very true and not racist at all.

Tomservo 02-27-2004 10:35 AM

Yeah, Ustwo, I know we're on different sides of the partisan track, but isn't this just presenting a biased view of a simple comment?

If she said "Blacks and whites all look alike to me." would you consider it a racist comment? Naw, then it would be a comment about seeing PAST race, right? So why assume she's being racist about Latinos and whites? Sure, she's black, but that doesn't make her a racist. It might have been a kludgy message, but let's not brand a woman racist unless she is one- and this definitely isn't proof of that.

Isn't it "I lost another account to Ditech" or whatever?

But about the openening post... What exactly would be racist about the statement? Though I would agree that it would not be the best thing to say, I think it's also bordering on being too politically correct to have to resort to analyzing every single comment that anybody says, either Republican or Democrat.

Here is a bit more ..

Quote:

Brown, during a briefing on the Haiti crisis Wednesday, said the president's representatives were "a bunch of white men." She was speaking to Assistant Secretary of State Roger Noriega, a Mexican-American.

After Noriega told Brown, who is black, that he resented being called a racist and branded a white man, she responded "you all look alike to me," according to witnesses.
If you can't find racism in that quote, then there is nothing more to talk about.

Change white to black and think of the uproar if a Republican had said the same things.

onetime2 02-27-2004 12:23 PM

Yet another politician being stupid. They really should know better but they don't.

I wonder if those who were calling for Trent Lott's head and, more recently, the Secretary of Education Mr Paige's will be as outspoken about these comments. Well, I guess I don't really wonder since I know the answer.

Strange Famous 02-27-2004 12:33 PM

There are plently or racists in both parties, I think everyone understand that.

Lebell 02-27-2004 01:36 PM

I saw that article last night linked from Fark.

Can't recall the site, but it wasn't Newsmax.

I don't have to imagine the rightous indignation if a white male senator said something like this to a black administration official; Bird was accused of it how many years ago and they still want his head.

But black racists tend to get a pass because we all know that only white racists are bad. (Yes, I'm angry and disgusted at this woman and the system that allows this to go unchallenged.)

Lebell 02-27-2004 01:41 PM

Ustwo, I'm sure they wouldn't have any problem seeing the racism in this statement:

Quote:

Johnson, during a briefing on the Haiti crisis Wednesday, said the president's representatives were "a bunch of black men." He was speaking to Assistant Secretary of State Juan Ortega, a Cuban-American.

After Ortega told Johnson, who is white, that he resented being called a racist and branded a black man, he responded "you all look alike to me," according to witnesses.

if anything, that's funny. a black woman turning a racist coin of phrase around to make a point.

in court, it's heresay... and therefore is inadmissible.

in journalism, it's not that big of a story. sorry charlie.

by the way, mark foley is gay. betcha didn't know that, now did ya?

Stare At The Sun 02-27-2004 02:13 PM

I too totally agree that it is crap, the only reason she is getting away with it is because she is black. If she was white...oh man, the shit would have hit the fan for sure.

MSD 02-27-2004 02:24 PM

Let's force her out of the Senate and get a respectable Democrat of any racial or ethnic group to replace her. This isn't quite on the same level as what Lott said, but it's sitll racist, and our modern society should have no place for it.
