They forgot two:

"We will not stop until every http://www1.pet.hw.ac.uk/images/coylogos/fina100.jpgl terrorist is brought to justice

and we have achievedhttp://www.members.optusnet.com.au/~...totallogo2.JPG victory.

(There is irony here. Can you spot it?)

Kadath 02-09-2004 07:09 AM

Taking a stab, I'd say that you used old, defunct oil companies to indicate that this is an old, useless joke?

Ustwo 02-09-2004 07:39 AM

Don't worry Lebell, at least I got it.

silent_jay 02-09-2004 07:53 AM

Nope.

Nice try, tho. ;)

Kadath 02-10-2004 12:39 PM

That's sweet, Lebell, but I want to be snide like Ustwo. Let me in on the joke?

No worries Kadath, when the repubs were having a field day with the draft dodging and Monica scandel....the Dems were crying in thier milk....it's just easier to throw stones at the man on top of the hill. you'll be seeing those jokes for the next 4 years....all you can do is say "there, there" pat them on the back and hand them a kleenex.

Ustwo 02-10-2004 01:23 PM

I can't be the only one that gets the joke besides Lebell.

I find that both typical and scary.

The irony is that Fina-Total, a French oil company, had billions in deals inked with Saddam Hussein, which is why I guess the person who put that together didn't include them: they didn't fit into his/her political satire.

Superbelt 02-10-2004 03:13 PM

I dunno about that Lebell, you make a good point with Fina-Total.

But I think the author if the original there used well known oil companies that operate within the US. I didn't know that Fina Total was an oil company and I bet that 99% of americans plus the document author don't know either. I doubt he excluded them on purpose.

You don't have Total gas stations back east? We have them all over the place around here (Colorado).

pocon1 02-10-2004 03:24 PM

I live in Maryland, and I have never heard of Total Gas. Last week I drove to Canada, Two years ago I drove to Key West. Never saw Fina or Total.

Superbelt 02-10-2004 03:25 PM

Never.

We have:
Exxon/Mobile
Texaco
Gulf
Hess
Sunoco
Shell
We used to have Amoco, no more though.

I have seen BP when I drive out of my general area. I have heard of Arco, never seen one though.

But I have never seen a Fina-Total or just plain (Total?). Never. The first time I ever heard that name was in this thread.

Never seen one in my life. BTW, I thought both jokes were funny!

Superbelt 02-10-2004 03:41 PM

And....
I live in Central Pa (York) My range extends from Wild Wood, New Jersey to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
and from Montreal, Quebec to the North/South Carolina border.
Those are the places that I have personally driven through and been.

Never seen a Fina-Total.

Lebell 02-10-2004 04:03 PM

Well, geez,

I'll take a picture if you need one.

There's one about 3 or 4 miles from the house :)

KellyC 02-10-2004 04:04 PM

And people wonder why the NEA has a bad reputation.

Superbelt 02-10-2004 06:08 PM

Teachers are allowed to think what they want and are allowed to teach their values.
If there is any kind of a lack of conservative voice in education it is the conservatives fault for by and large not being interested in eductating our youth.

AHEM!

Excuse me, but teachers are NOT necessarily allowed to teach "thier values".

There are guidelines of teaching ethics, and if pushing your own politics isn't one of them in his school district, it certainly should be.

I know my own instructors are VERY careful about distinguishing their personal views and what they can teach, and I appreciate that.

I want a teacher who presents information so I can make up my own mind, not one who is interested in making me part of their personal "constituency".

Superbelt 02-11-2004 04:09 AM

Not to turn this into an education thread, but teachers are permitted to share their views.

I agree, not to turn this into an education thread, but you didn't say "share their views". You said, "teach their values".

Superbelt 02-11-2004 10:05 AM

Well I see a difference between teach your values and indoctrination.

Teaching values is sharing personal views. I think teachers are much more effective when they teach from personal experience as long as they don't exclude any other side from being discussed.
Bludgeoning kids day after day with a specific point of view is indoctrination and I think there are few to none of that type of teacher in this country.

That's imo, maybe you didn't like my choice of words, but that's what I meant.
