A Return to the Moon?
 

The National Review online has a peice stating that Bush will announce a return to the moon on his speech commemortating the Wright Bros flight on Dec. 17. Here's a link -- http://www.nationalreview.com/commen...0312030858.asp

On the one hand I want to shout "YES!!" and say this is exactly the shot in the arm NASA needs. On the other hand I say: With what money exactly does he plan on doing this with? More borrowing, more debt for me and mine to pay off, long after he's gone?

Exactly. One other thing I noticed is that the two states with the biggest stakes in NASA are--Florida and Texas. Bush's brother is governor of Florida, and Bush himself is from Texas. Kind of an odd coincidence.

Look, I will say this, going to space can only benefit us. I believe that most cures for the diseases that are "incurable" will be worked out in space, I hope this goes through.

Maybe this time when on the moon,the American flag will not be flapping in the wind, when the astronauts jump they will continue at the same projectile into outer space and the golf ball that is hit will not sit on the zero gravity surface of the moon.

Maybe the bugs have been worked out over the last 35 years.

Hmmm...I thought the gravity on the surface of the moon was roughly 1/6 the gravity of the surface of the earth. Any object which has mass has SOME gravity.

Anyway, I think this is an important step, and I fully support any effort to further space exploration and utilization.

I thought that the 1/6 factor was the relation of the earths pull on the moon not the level of gravity on the moon. I don't know,I flunked biology in high school.

Perhaps the fact that China says it has intentions of establishing a base and harvesting resources (whatever they may be) there.

we need to get ourselves back in the buissness of space travel, beyond earth's orbit again. I dont care if bush does it just for votes, it dosent make any difference, it should be done, so i'm happy he might do it.

i'm a little confused by this post- are you implying that the moon landing is a hoax? And if you are i hope it isn't from that show FOX put on the air about a year ago. What a tragedy that was.

as for the flag- they placed wire around the edges so it would actually look like a flag, and any "flapping" could be explained by contraction and expansion due to changes in tempurature- the sun has no atmosphere to block it's radiation to the moon's surface- so the tempurature varies on the moon from -233*C to 123*C. And the moon has about 0.012 times the mass of earth, and about 0.25 times the diameter of earth, which results in a gravity about 1/6th of earth, or 1.26m/s^2.

When an astronaut jumps on the moon, applying the same amount of force that he would on earth will result in a gain in height of 6 times that he would have on earth. Same with a golfball. if it travels 200m on earth, it would go over a kilometre on the moon.

Personally, I think all the NASA manned missions have paid the USA back many times over in technology patents, jobs, and worldwide reputation.

I wish we would go for a manned mission to mars, but another moon mission is fine with me.

Exploring is one of the better things we as humans are good at, I think it's very important we go to the moon and rape it of any resources (before china does) it has, and then move on to Mars to see if there's anything neat there.

for those that dont know what i am refering it, in bush's state of the union address, he put some money twords fuel cell cars, but for got to mention that the money went twords converting natural gas to hydrogen, basicly an unclean source that only compunds the problem. helping out his oil buddies

actually, NASA is a very cheap agency normally (w/out moon missions) for taxpayers. They put up satalites for commercial use all the time, and make a lot of money doing it these days.

This is a total play for re-election. The !*@ governemt is broke and he wants to go to the moon. What the hell for? It's alla smoke screen to avoid attention to the real issues that should be addressed. For the amount of money it would take to get to the moon, you could do a world of good right here - on the ground.

The first Bush did a similar thing about going to Mars on the steps of the Air & Space Museum while he was president. It is a "no down side" vapor promise.

This is just the military worried about China's recent venture into space. That and a little PR. I doubt it will happen though because it would cost a lot of money that the government does not have.

Yes, go to the moon, harvest moon rock, and sell it to Rap Stars to spend exhorbitant amounts to redecorate their homes in the newest rare material!!!

We did it in the 1960's with about as much computer power as a $150 calculator now-a-days.

Strap a rocket to a pinto, throw in the graphing calculator and have some volunteer go to the moon. How hard can it be?

I want the country to go to the moon as much as anyone else, hell colonize and stuff, but it doesn't seem like the public or the government is motivated mentally and financially right now

Finally the idiot is roumored to be getting ready to say something I can agree with. However, given his track record of saying A and doing ~A, I won't hold my breath if he announces it.

If he is continually rumored to be about to announce it, though, I might go as far as thinking he might have had someone give him a good idea.

Kiwiman, before you write me off, I hate Bush for good reasons, but so many of them that I get so angry when I try to lay them all out that I maje ttypos all ovre teh palce.

That's ok, i like Bush for good reasons too. It's just that where i live, my peers are complete morons when it comes to politics. Anything America does is Bush's fault, be it good or bad. Some of my friends have even shown sympathy for Saddam, saying how mean Bush is taking him hostage like that.

Yet, when i try to sway them with facts and denounce the silly things they say, they refuse to listen.

It gives me the impression that a lot of anti-Bush people are this way.
