"Freedom Fries" a Good Idea?
Maybe it's just me but I can't help but think that it was a total wasted of time for the Senate (or wherever, I'm no American) to pass a bill to rename french fries (and french toast, I hear). Don't they have more pressing issues to discuss? Hell, french fries aren't even French! You were already mocking them by calling them that...
So, who thinks that "freedom fries," were a good idea? Who thinks they were a waste of time? Last edited by KnifeMissile; 11-02-2003 at 12:52 PM.. |

I live in DC, and it was here in congress where they changed the manes. I think its stupid, heard it on SNL for the first time and I thought it was just a joke, but it really makes you woner how stupid a country can be.

Are you sure that Congress was involved? When I heard about this, it was only changed to "Freedom Fries" on the menu of Airforce One, which sounds like an extremely small change for a very small number of people which was blown completely out of proportion.

I heard that the whole "freedom fries" idea was created and performed by the same sailors who made that whole "mission accomplished" banner, they were just doing it for a joke, see. Turns out those guys could have initiated the war in Iraq too, their crazy antics have repeatedly put the Bush administration in a bad light.

While much of this has been done in jest there remains serious differences between the US and France. One might assume that these differences are affecting France in the only way they seem to understand - financially. I'm not sure of figures but I do know that in our industry there has been a dramatic decrease in the purchase of French wines - one of their chief exports and one of the most profitable. Many in our industry have found that we are doing fine without them and because of their absence many consumers in America have changed their buying habits. I know that in our stores, and in most others in our area we are suggesting Australian wines in their place - they are much more ecomical and usually of a better quality. If all of us would stop buying "French" it would have a definite impact on them.

While I thought the freedom fry thing was silly, I have not purchased a French product since this whole mess started. Since it is obvious that cash is the most important thing to the French, they can get it from somewhere else.
Its a small thing, but so what, Wisconsin makes fine cheese, California has fine wine

You Europeans feel we are oil hoarding war mongerers. We feel (great percentage of Americans) that the French are a bunch of punk made bitch ingreats who have forgotten what our country has done for them. We showed our displeasure by hitting them where it hurts there pocketbooks.

Thank you for telling me how I feel, I appreciate that. Clearly, as a member of the homogenic 500-million populace of Europe, I match the views that are held by all other citizens of the continent. As a Norwegian (though we are not a member of the EU), I support every move done by France, ezpecially trying to stop a war because they want to keep trading oil with a dictator. This might seem morally wrong, but being an European, sharing strong bonds with all fellow Europeans including those living in entirely different cultures, I choose to ignore it. I am pleased to see that you avoid the bothersome moral highground by jumping the patriot bandwagon and follow some bizarre propaganda-whim in a non-constructive pissfight with another nation. Good luck to you all.

I have to agree with most here that this whole issue and the way it is carrying on is childish and kindergaden like. Changing french fries to freedom fries is stupid enough, but having people defend it blows me away. Are we still children here?
Boycotting wine and other stuff does absoluty nothing to change what has happened in regards to Iraq, so let's all have a glass of wine and grow up.

So we renamed them freedom fries because france started acting like the us. You know, putting their national interest ahead of anyone else. I think it was actually a compliment. Like, "Good Job, France! You're finally learning from our example, for a short period of time all references to you in our country will now be replaced with the word freedom in your honor."
