"Freedom Fries" a Good Idea?

Maybe it's just me but I can't help but think that it was a total wasted of time for the Senate (or wherever, I'm no American) to pass a bill to rename french fries (and french toast, I hear). Don't they have more pressing issues to discuss? Hell, french fries aren't even French! You were already mocking them by calling them that...

So, who thinks that "freedom fries," were a good idea?
Who thinks they were a waste of time?

seretogis 11-02-2003 12:35 PM

This is old, and really not as big of a deal as you are making it.

Food Eater Lad 11-02-2003 12:36 PM

I think it was silly and childish.

KnifeMissile 11-02-2003 12:53 PM

Sorry, I had forgotten to search for previous threads.

I have tried to delete this thread but, apparently, I do not have permission to do so...

Moderators, help!

reconmike 11-02-2003 06:44 PM

they are " potatoes du cowards" anyhow.

The_Dude 11-02-2003 06:48 PM

just a waste of time and moeny.

almostaugust 11-02-2003 09:02 PM

One of the most childish things i've seen.

gabshu 11-02-2003 09:10 PM

I live in DC, and it was here in congress where they changed the manes. I think its stupid, heard it on SNL for the first time and I thought it was just a joke, but it really makes you woner how stupid a country can be.

mystmarimatt 11-02-2003 09:23 PM

i wrote a whole satirical essay making fun of it

Dilbert1234567 11-03-2003 01:13 PM

its sooo dumb, they are french fries, that is waht they are called.

Liquor Dealer 11-03-2003 01:31 PM

A rose by any other name is still a rose.

seretogis 11-03-2003 01:44 PM

Are you sure that Congress was involved? When I heard about this, it was only changed to "Freedom Fries" on the menu of Airforce One, which sounds like an extremely small change for a very small number of people which was blown completely out of proportion.

eple 11-03-2003 02:07 PM

I heard that the whole "freedom fries" idea was created and performed by the same sailors who made that whole "mission accomplished" banner, they were just doing it for a joke, see. Turns out those guys could have initiated the war in Iraq too, their crazy antics have repeatedly put the Bush administration in a bad light.

Liquor Dealer 11-03-2003 02:23 PM

While much of this has been done in jest there remains serious differences between the US and France. One might assume that these differences are affecting France in the only way they seem to understand - financially. I'm not sure of figures but I do know that in our industry there has been a dramatic decrease in the purchase of French wines - one of their chief exports and one of the most profitable. Many in our industry have found that we are doing fine without them and because of their absence many consumers in America have changed their buying habits. I know that in our stores, and in most others in our area we are suggesting Australian wines in their place - they are much more ecomical and usually of a better quality. If all of us would stop buying "French" it would have a definite impact on them.

Ustwo 11-03-2003 03:00 PM

While I thought the freedom fry thing was silly, I have not purchased a French product since this whole mess started. Since it is obvious that cash is the most important thing to the French, they can get it from somewhere else.

Its a small thing, but so what, Wisconsin makes fine cheese, California has fine wine :)

eple 11-03-2003 03:47 PM

The whole idea of trying to harm France is childish.

Mojo_PeiPei 11-03-2003 03:53 PM

Why? They tried to spite us for their own selfish reasons, we are just paying them back.

eple 11-03-2003 03:58 PM

Yes by all means, if they started, clearly you have every right to act childish.

Why did that arguement never work out in kindergarden?

Mojo_PeiPei 11-03-2003 04:05 PM

You Europeans feel we are oil hoarding war mongerers. We feel (great percentage of Americans) that the French are a bunch of punk made bitch ingreats who have forgotten what our country has done for them. We showed our displeasure by hitting them where it hurts there pocketbooks.

eple 11-03-2003 04:12 PM

Thank you for telling me how I feel, I appreciate that. Clearly, as a member of the homogenic 500-million populace of Europe, I match the views that are held by all other citizens of the continent. As a Norwegian (though we are not a member of the EU), I support every move done by France, ezpecially trying to stop a war because they want to keep trading oil with a dictator. This might seem morally wrong, but being an European, sharing strong bonds with all fellow Europeans including those living in entirely different cultures, I choose to ignore it. I am pleased to see that you avoid the bothersome moral highground by jumping the patriot bandwagon and follow some bizarre propaganda-whim in a non-constructive pissfight with another nation. Good luck to you all.

I decided to remove my reply to your pompous bullshit

I am sorry you didn't comprehend, but I did say that France vetoed in the UN mostly based on their trade connections with the Saddam regime. I did not kiss France's ass, I flipped you both off for being childish. Read my post again, reply if you want to. I hear rumors that irony is less common in the US than in Norway (my half-american gf said that, not me), but this shouldn't be too hard.

Quick translation of my previous post:
->Both France and the US are acting stupid
->Smart Americans should avoid a stupid pissfight like this, ->anyone living in Europe can not neccecarily be generalized within some vauge kliche's regarding French people.

Good thing I saved your first answer then, so everyne can see how your posts evolved from moronic personal attacks based on a lack of comprehension of your own language, to just plain personal attacks.

s1em 11-03-2003 05:39 PM

By the way, I just wanted to mention that "freedom fries" really were a Congressional thing. I know because it was a Congressman from my state who spearheaded it all: Bob Ney. I think he's a chowderhead, but I think I'm in the minority.

splck 11-03-2003 06:00 PM

I have to agree with most here that this whole issue and the way it is carrying on is childish and kindergaden like. Changing french fries to freedom fries is stupid enough, but having people defend it blows me away. Are we still children here?
Boycotting wine and other stuff does absoluty nothing to change what has happened in regards to Iraq, so let's all have a glass of wine and grow up. :)

Yes, in the cafeteria of congress french fries were changed to freedomo fries, and french toast was changed to freedom toast. pretty stupid if you ask me.

Frances defense of Iraq was based on money, so they can get it from someone else besides me. This isn't childish, I just decided not to support French industry in my small way. Its not like France is the only place to get a good bottle of wine.

When in defense of French trade and ELF oil contracts, France did all in its power to keep Saddam in power, all 'childishness' went away. There is nothing childish about mass graves.

filtherton 11-03-2003 10:19 PM

So we renamed them freedom fries because france started acting like the us. You know, putting their national interest ahead of anyone else. I think it was actually a compliment. Like, "Good Job, France! You're finally learning from our example, for a short period of time all references to you in our country will now be replaced with the word freedom in your honor."

ARTelevision 11-03-2003 10:26 PM

Personally, I like the idea of calling them Freedom Fries instead of French Fries. I think it's a great idea. But it's not something I would argue about. It's just a personal preference.

Astrocloud 11-03-2003 11:22 PM

Personally I think that naming our saturated fat sticks after the french was more of an insult than renaming them.

dog1 11-04-2003 03:00 PM

Oh my, the French aren't war mongers. Let's insult them !!

The irony is slaying me...

people, this was a lighthearted thread about fries and it's turned into an intercontinental pissing contest. surely you guys have something better to do than insult people who don't think the same way you do?
