And no matter how you slice it, the ... NRA ... are too busy putting on Christmas plays.
I agree with you on that one. But really, it's not such a bad thing. I mean, maybe they could focus on fighting gun control more, but christmas plays are fun!

So what you're saying is the ACLU does defend and back the NRA as they currently do NAMBLA? I think we both know that they don't.

Does that make any fucking sense at all?

That wasn't the statement BoCo made, and yes, we both know that.

Yes. It does. It wasn't the question, but it does.

Can you please explain how defending NAMBLA makes sense, yet supporting the NRA doesn't? I fail to see how that makes any sense at all.

I'm confused. Why would the NRA, one of the largest political action committees, need the help of the ACLU? They are different organizations with different goals. I don't see the ACLU as defending NAMBLA, I see them as defending the right for organizations that are behaving legally to exist without government interference. And I showed you at least one case where the ACLU and NRA worked together.

I'm really lost on your point. At first, I thought you were trying to back up BoCo's point that the NRA and ACLU have never worked together. Now, it seems like you're saying that since the ACLU and NRA don't work together as best friends, that the ACLU is somehow a Bad Group.

I'm very confused. Perhaps I should have a drink and re-read this in a bit.

It doesn't matter if the NRA needs the ACLU, which they don't, but if they want to be the group they claim to be they should defend/support them. Read below. This is from ACLU's website.

Do I not have the right to own a gun? Then why doesn't the ACLU defend it?

IMO, the ACLU is not only a bad group, but a terrible one and it couldn't possibly be worse.

I'll leave it at that because I can't express my opinion of the ACLU in a manor which is accepted here, and with that I think I'll just go back to not posting in politics... Christ, I fucking hate this board.

I think you just need a big hug, sixate.

I still don't understand your point. Why should the ACLU defend your right to own a gun when the NRA does such a good job? Sounds like efficient division of labor to me.

Simple. The right to keep and bear arms is a Constitutional right. The ACLU claims that it exists to defend my Constitutional rights. Not "some" of my rights, or the rights it thinks are the most popular, but all of them.

It does not matter that there are other special interest groups that like certain rights more. Those groups never claimed to have the entire Constitution in mind. The ACLU does, but they still play favorites with sections of the Constitution, and allow considerable interpretation beyond what the Supreme Court has determined.

Maybe help should be given mainly to those who need it, I don't believe there are quite enough resources to give it to all those who deserve it. The NRA does a very good job of defending themselves, so maybe the ACLU might be better off defending those without the kind of rescourses the NRA control.

Exactly. The ACLU is a private organization, they can pick and choose if they wish. I imagine they saw the great job that the NRA is doing with the 2nd amendment and decided to focus their resources elsewhere. Or perhaps they love the 1st amendment a lot, and only like the 2nd amendment a little.

Hey wait, I haven't seen them do anything about the 13th amendment lately. EQUAL TIME FOR THE 13TH AMENDMENT.

Did you even read my last post!?!?!?

From ACLU's website.

They state on their own website that they will defend all rights and liberties guaranteed to all people in the country. Last time I checked we are all guaranteed the right to own firearms, right? Now please explain why the ACLU does not support the NRA when they state on their own website that they will.... They are a private organization who can decide who they want to defend/support, but they said they will defend all rights, and they don't. So they're all a bunch of hypocrites, and you ignore that fact...

Fuck! I can't believe I even posted in this damn thread again.

Although I happen to agree with you, this point is certainly debatable. ACLU protects "individual rights and liberties". The ACLU holds that the constitutional right to bear arms is a collective right and not an individual right. They are somewhat backed up by the only Supreme Court ruling that deals with this issue. That ruling, however, is considered ambiguous by many. Some other lower court rulings have made the assumption that the right to bear arms is an individual right. The current Justice Department has made the same assumption. I know there are some gun rights groups in California trying to push forth a case that would force the Supreme Court to make a clear ruling on this issue. Though the odds aren't good, if this suceeds, I think the ACLU would be forced to take a position on gun rights. As it is, however, I think it i unfair to label them hypocrites.

Just because the ACLU doesn't interpret the 2nd amendment in the same way as you doesn't mean they are hypocrites, just that they have a different opinion. I could say that since the NRA doesn't defend my right to own a nuclear missle, that they don't properly fight for my right to keep and bear arms.

Huggles.
