Report: Anthrax in Suitcase Kills Egyptian Heading to Canada

An Egyptian ship crewman has apparently died from exposure to anthrax (search) contained in a suitcase he opened, Reuters news service reported Monday............

Ibrahim, a crewman aboard an Egyptian merchant ship called the Wabi Alaras (search), was transporting the suitcase to Canada, although authorities do not believe he knew what was in the bag, according to Reuters..........

"He opened it because he was curious," Castro told Reuters. "We imagine that this is about bioterrorism and Brazil was just used as a point of transfer

My guess is that the intended target was the US, not Canada. Our border with Canada is easy pickin's for anyone that wants to get in illegally.

Stan, the Canadian border is still the best way to smuggle stuff into the US. The "vast coastlines" are not that great for merchant ships, especially with US coastal patrols going on. The southern border is too heavily policed for a terrorist: their chances of getting caught are huge, seeing that even Mexican smugglers would get suspicious when an Arab tries to get into the US there.

Well, anyone trying to get into the US from here must deal with US customs, not Canadian customs, so while it is true that potential terrorists might immigrate here and attempt to enter the US, American agents let them in, not us.

We have relied on distance to protect us in the past- That worked in WW ll. On only a few occasions were the Japanese or Germans able to pose a threat other than with submarines. That was then and this is now. While 9-11 should have been a wakeup call for all of us, it wasn't - As easy as it is to get into the U.S. legally (for a defined period of time), why would one draw the attention that trying to enter illegally attracts. While visas may be somewhat more difficult to get now than they were in the past there is hardly no way that this or any other country can guard its borders against state supported terrorists. If a government is willing to provide the necessary paperwork - that of a student, for business purposes, to seek medical attention, to visit Aunt Hilda, or with 10 jillion different forms of diplomatic free passes available. The Mexican border, to those who use it on a regular basis is not even a speed bump - nor is the Canadian border. Terrorism is no different than assassination. There is no possible way that a person can be protected against an assassin if the assassin is willing to die. The same is true for any other form of terrorism - if they are willing to die, and this appears to be a desirable end for religious extremists, then absolutely nothing can provide 100% protection. Our only choice, if we want to be totally free from these types of threats is isolationism and I doubt that in today's world any nation could totally isolate itself - much less the US being capable of it.

My point was that the US shouldn't point fingers at anyone but themselves regarding people entering their country legally or illegally. In essence, I'm agreeing with you: blaming Canadian customs agents is utterly pointless.
