U.S. Soldier Shoots Tiger at Baghdad Zoo

BAGHDAD, Iraq - A U.S. soldier shot and killed a tiger at the Baghdad zoo after it bit another soldier who had reached through the bars of its cage to feed it, a zoo security guard said Saturday.

The soldiers had been drinking beer when they entered the zoo Thursday night after it closed, said the guard, Zuhair Abdul-Majeed.

"He was drunk," Abdul-Majeed said of the bitten soldier.

After the man was bit, the other American shot the tiger three times in the head and killed it, Abdul-Majeed told The Associated Press.

It was impossible to reach the U.S. military spokesman's office because the telephones have not worked for three days.

The zoo reopened July 20, three months after Baghdad was captured by the Americans.

It had 1.5 million visitors in 2001 but hit hard times more recently. Saddam Hussein (news - web sites) closed it for renovation last year, and it was scheduled to reopen on April 7 with a $27 million facelift.

Instead, on that day, American troops were on the outskirts of Baghdad, and Iraqi fighters had booted the zookeepers from the park, setting up defensive positions among the cages.

When zoo workers returned a week later, some animals lay dead in their cages, others had escaped when mortar rounds blasted open the bars, and yet others had been looted.

Some wild animals roamed the park freely, including a bear that mauled and partially ate three civilians, and three lions that were shot to death when they tried to pounce on a contingent of invading American soldiers.

Since then, the surviving animals have been nursed back to health, and more animals have been brought in from a small private zoo across town and from the private zoos found in the palaces of Saddam's family.

Incidents like this are to be expected when you mix alcohol with guns. I hope that the soldiers involved are thrown in jail and booted out of the service.

I guess that'll teach the tiger not to bite the hand that feeds you!

Yeah I heard about this in an IRC room. It was from Reuters so I asked where the proof was (no pictures, should be blood stains, dead tiger, soldier with a missing finger. just seemed kind of fishy to me) since they're skewed to the left.

I got banned, I guess they thought it was a stupid question. Or maybe they didn't want to have to deal with a stupid ignorant conservative as I'm often categorized as. Still makes me wonder though, has this ever been confirmed?

Some Dumb-ass bringing discredit on the rest of our men there doing good, dangerous work. I feel bad for the tiger.

They will be, mainly for being drunk while on duty and not killing the tiger. It's like if you show up to work drunk, you will most likely be fired.

Actually, you would be suprised how much trouble they will be in for killing an endangered species. DOD does not fuck around with that stuff.

I remeber CNN doing a feel good 'puff' story on the zoo reopening a couple of months ago. My god.

I was just going off of what I know about military law, I've had some conversations with some JAGs before, never heard them mention the endangered species stuff, tho I do imagine that will be a factor. A lessened one, because of the fact that the dumbass would have died if the tiger kept going.

Post Scriptum: I'm not advocating shooting a tiger in the head, killing ES's is dumb, I'm just saying that the self defense court defense will play into the role of the Court Martial.

Self defense arguments shouldn't work when you willingly shove your arm at a wild carnivorous animal.

And the soldiers life was not in jeopardy, The arm may have been bit off but the soldier would have survived without it.

The shouldn't but they do, kinda like when a guy injures himself breaking into a person's house and sues the people he was trying to rob for negligence, and wins at that.
