my 1st post ever, lets hope its not too contraversal

OK so I recently went to a forum that I frequent and arise with the question..

"How do I go about moving out of the country?"

more specifically I asked how to move to the UK

I'm usually highly respectful of most people as individuals, but when you ask a question as simple as that, and you get mob rushed.
it makes you fight back, you are being ganged up on.
its a normal reaction isnt it?

Im suprised that I was able to be puched into this new "low"

but the funny thing is, this forum, is about computer modifications, and not only did I get mobbed about something that was off topic, it was from a bunch of hardcore computer geeks like myself.

In short, I got banned. hard.

I'm not too familiar with the rules here just yet, as I say, its my 1st post. I hope im not breakin any by posting this link, but I would like some people to read this. Maybe tell me if they agree with me or disagree with me.

but at least here I feel safe under the rule of civility and fairness.

thier rules are rather slanted..

anyways heres the link :) http://forums.pimprig.com/showthread.php?threadid=8444

I agree that you didn't do anything wrong. You really didn't. Did that invent fellow get banned as well?

Anyhow, who cares if you've been banned. That doesn't seem like such a great forum anyway.

[edit: You know, I think its kinda funny that people will say "Love it or leave it", but then act insulted when you announce your plans to leave. And you know they'd fight any change you work for.]

Thraeryn 08-19-2003 10:22 PM

That's pretty sad. This forum, aside from one or two folks that the mods slap down, is not like that. In fact, our mods generally do a wonderful job of keeping ideas and opinions in the mix while keeping insults and personal attacks out.

Speaking as someone who has immigrated to a new country, I'll give you a little practical advice. The longest route is to marry someone there. The shortest route is to get hired by a foreign company. In either case, you should realize right now that it's a whole `nother country, really and for true. I thought Canada was like The US, Jr. until I -got- there and found that I had no idea what half of their common cultural references meant. I'd never (and still haven't) eaten at a Tim Horton's. I never watched Rocket Robin Hood as a kid. I didn't get "burnt toast". I didn't know jack.

There is definitely culture shock. If you're serious, be prepared. I'm just glad that these days, I can listen to "Living In America" by James Brown and actually be living in America.

I also read this thread, and I have to say you were mistreated in every respect. Sorry I don't have anything to offer on your actual question though. :)

SLM3 08-19-2003 11:40 PM

Wow, it's like they created an argument all on their own. I almost wanted to be able to post just to say how idiotic I found their rants. Amazing.

Indeed.

Actually sometimes just driving from SoCal to Northern Cal feels like its a whole differnet country at times.

Rippley 08-20-2003 01:11 AM

I'm not even sure I could tell you where that whole thread went wrong... all of a sudden it just desintegrated into flaming all over the place. Impressive displays of aggression on the part of several of the posters. I don't think you'll encounter that in here. Welcome aboard :)

On the whole emigration thing, I've got nothing for you, buddy. I'm a dual citizen since birth and perfectly happy with it :)

I will second Thraeryn on the whole culture shock thing, though. Be prepared to be confused for a long ass time. Brits technically speak the same language as us, but the cultural references and slang... whoa Nelly!!! Make sure to get yourself some british friends who don't mind translating for you A.S.A.P.

Good Luck

jwoody 08-20-2003 02:55 AM

Shauk - I notice you plan on working as a DJ. You should know that the UK has a major surplus of wanna-be DJ's (especially dance music) so unless you 'know someone', or you're very good, you should be prepared to work in shitty little bars for very little money.

A friend of mine does warm-up slots at Shindig (one of the most famous club nights in England) and gets paid less than £100 for an hour slot.

The days of £500 - £1000 per night are long gone for all but the chosen few.

The golden DJ goose is laying it's final few eggs as we speak.

Bill O'Rights 08-20-2003 04:47 AM

WTF happened to that thread. One minute Shauk asks a reasonable (IMO) question, and then proceeds to get the crap beaten outa him by pseudo-patriots. I guess I thought that the idea behind a forum was an open exchange of ideas, thoughts and opinions. Well, at least that's what you're going to find here, Shauk. While the debates here can get a little "heated" at times...rarely have I seen a personal attack. And I have never seen an attack on such a simple reasonable question. Welcome Shauk...and good luck on your quest.

Darkblack 08-20-2003 05:17 AM

lol My board warrior hat almost went on! I would have gotten banned in my first post though.

Glad to have you here bro.

ninety09 08-20-2003 07:11 AM

Those patriotic Americans were just being assholes. Good thing you got banned, you deserve better than that :p

Lebell 08-20-2003 08:01 AM

Welcome to the Board, Shauk.

In brief, treat people respectfully when expressing your opinion, and you will be ok on TFP.

Read each forum's rules for more specific rules (e.g. no MEN posting in the Ladies Lounge.)

Generally, calling people names, flames in general, rude posts, trolling, spamming, site-plugging, etc. will get you a warning PM and/or a ban depending on the severity and your reaction. (Honest mistakes will almost never result in a ban the first time.)

Expressing an unpopular opinion, heated (but civil) debate, asking honest questions (within the rules), will almost never result in problems, and if there is a problem, you will most likely just be PM'd by a mod with a friendly suggestion.

As to immigrating to England, start by visiting The British Immigration and Nationality Directorate.

Shauk 08-20-2003 09:11 AM

spiffy :) you guys are already much cooler than that forum in my opinion...

and jwoody, I do know a few people out there and I understand entirely about the whole DJ goose eggs thing... but the way I figure it. people in this industry get a lot more respect when you are from someplace "exotic" america may not be somewhat exotic but to people who have never been there *shrug* who knows?

I just know that I always see banners that are like "straight from the UK" or "fresh outta London!"
I realize in my head that its just a location, but it makes them seem more exotic, because its like "ooooh if I don't gt see him this time he may never come back and I'll have missed a chance of a lifetime"

yeah, I'm in Idaho, Idaho doesnt know what a DJ is, Doesn't know what mixing is.

its sad.

I was playing out on a somewhat regular basis in Spokane, WA though. (think mini-seattle)

anywhoo. I guess I'll post more here :) thanks for the warm invite and the useful information

archer2371 08-20-2003 10:38 AM

Yeah, I hate it when Americans make assholes of ourselves. You just wanted to go to the UK to further a career you really believe in. What's wrong with that? Anyways, welcome to TFP and I hope you have a good time.

debaser 08-20-2003 02:36 PM

I read that thread, I wouldn't lose any sleep over being banned.

That duckwarrior guy is a complete asshole. Talk about not seeing the forest for the trees.

Have fun in GB, it's a cool place.

docbungle 08-20-2003 03:52 PM

Damn that inbred forum sucks. I was tempted to flame the hell out those guys. Am I the only one? Damn, that was tempting. Anyway, gl with the dj thing.

Shauk 08-20-2003 04:28 PM

heh I can't believe I held my tongue as long as I did... then I got all pissy. oh well.

simply amazing.. that board is run by a buncha stormtroopers or something.

jumpingbeans 08-21-2003 05:36 AM

HMMMM

Nad Adam 08-21-2003 07:31 AM

Hmmm, was that the hitler-jugend forum? What a bunch of 1984-thinking wankers.
