An exercise in logic

The guy in Washington sitting in the president's chair rules out terrorism as the cause of the massive blackout. He says he DOES NOT know the cause of the blackout. So, since he doesn't know the cause, how can he rule out terrorism?

Silly me.

Good point. Did you see our fearless leader's speach last night? I always get the sinking feeling that I'm way more intelligent than him everytime I see him speak .

I understand how it would be possible to not know exactly what happen yet still know quite definatively that terrorism it wasn't.

Not that I disagree with the illogicalness of much of what the prez says or often question his intellectual prowess

I much as I like to bag on "W", and as pathetic as his logic and general "off the cuff" speaking is, I think he felt he had to say something like this - really, every politican was saying it. They were just trying to reassure everyone that everything was going to be o.k. It's just what politicans are supposed to do.

Bush is worried about his rapidly declining popularity vote. By mentioning that it wasn't terrorism, he brings this enemy back into people's minds, with the implicit suggestion that he is doing a great job of preventing it. Sad. This tactic of stimulating Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt in the people of America is driving this country into the ground. I hope more people realize this before the next election.

And he couldn't POSSIBLY be saying that because EVERYONE in the media was either asking or speculating it could possibly be a terrorist act.

The whole nation sure is feeling all of that subliminal fear though. A malfunction in the electrical system and look out there are terrorists right around the corner!

Just because you can determine a purple elephant did it doesn't that a Street Mime working for the Unibomber did it.

It is illogical, they still don't know, so they can't rule it out. Lying to the public to ressure them is ah....not new.
Just hope it wasn't done by someone in the US, he may decide to bomb the area.
thought.....(what if Suddam and Osama are hiding out in California, will he apply the same logic and bomb it?)

Unless the street mime was a purple elephant who was working for the Unibomber. Then it's logical and true. Nes pas?

Oh come on, all he said is that its not terrorism, and all of a sudden he's stimulating fear, uncertainly, and doubt? I think you are digging way too deep into the meaning of his words. Like previous posters have said, he's just reassuring people that things will be ok - you know, because people are frightful animals, and a mob of frightful animals is downright dangerous.

Bush is definitely not the brightest bulb on the chandelier, but all these conspiracy theories are just silly. I'm not voting for him, because he's a sub-intelligent oil-man whose interests don't coincide with mine, not because he's the evil manipulative genius you seem to make him out to be

Bleh, I really wish politicians would take the opportunity to FIX THE PROBLEM rather then take the initiative to make the other party look bad.

They are too busy making themselves look like gold by making the other guy look like shit. The liberal left are quite profecient at this. The media isn't helping any.

I guess they ruled out terrorism because there were no obvious signs of it, it there were then they would try to cover up the idea that terrorist could cause that kind of damage.

Wouldn't that be useless seeing as the terrorists already know what they did?

terrorism- to fill with terror, the act of using intimidation to coerce a community or government (Concise Oxford dictionary)

If you go for the first meaning then it was terrorism, for some...
Doen't really mean there was a terrorist involved, just the fact that there may have been a group of people in "terror" or fear during the ordeal....
Which if you wanna have some fun, we can say Canada or the US (depending on the source of the outage) is a terrorist nation...
OR to be more specific, the power campany at the source... which will be no surprise to most people. Actually I have always felt that the power company are nothing but a bunch of terrorists (joke) ... especially when I'm waiting for my monthly bill.
