Thousands likely to rally to Stewart/Colbert to support being a moderate
Quote:
FINALLY, a non-insane rally that might get the attention of the MSM. If for no other reason than it's anti-fear stance (with a liberal amount of funny thrown in). |
Brilliant. I hope he manages a large turnout.
|
I love John Stewart. I hope this is effective as his push to get Crossfire to stop the nonsense...
of course you could always just join Colbert in his Keep Fear Alive march scheduled for the same day. |
Those moderate radicals...!
I can just see the right having a conniption fit about how the "liberal threat" is mobilizing to continue their "Marxist agenda." What I like about that is the irony behind it. I can't wait. |
I'm surprised they were able to find a weekend that close to the election where the Tea Party wasn't having a protest...
So who is going? I am about 85% sure I will be there. |
Speaking as a solidly centrist liberally conservative demoliberpublican, I think it's about damn time someone tried to counteract the extremism.

Well, considering that Beck's rally didn't really say anything, didn't really have a purpose, or didn't really have a call to action, I can't see how this rally can really go wrong. It was kind of intentional on Beck's part, by making it non-political. In a general sense, I guess it called to "restore traditional American values." But it was decidedly targeted at his audience, which includes many Tea Partiers. If anything, Beck's rally served to galvanize his audience. His rally was non-political (ostensibly), but it could be argued that it was a political move by Beck.
If you think about it, the underlying message of this upcoming rally is kind of the same. It's called "Restoring Sanity," but this is really about restoring honour too, because what is honour? Wikipedia says that honour is about honesty, respect, integrity, or fairness. I think that's what Jon Stewart is getting at in the way he knows best. |
The more I think about it, what I wrote will mainly be confined to internet forums and outrage radio.
I bet mainstream media won't even give much attention (not nearly as much as Beck or the Qu'ran burning guy anyway) and will merely do short, light segments at the end of the news between Dog Raises Cat! and Grandma Turns 110! stories. Oh yeah, and October 30th is also the 36th anniversary of Nolan Ryan throwing the fastest recorded pitch in baseball history EVER! 100.9mph! In other words, "Ohh those crazy kids...." |
i think the press will devote some attention to this. it's really only left protests that get ignored altogether. things like the massive protests against the iraq war.
so the scale of press attention is: conservatives---lots of press. moderates---boring. left---doesn't exist. |
Well, unless anarchists break something.
|
talk about a marketing coup... MTV Networks will have a great production.
|
right. forgot about that. evil black block. nihilists running wild in the streets saying snippy things to officers of the law and injury the sacred property of corporate entities. who are these ingrates? wild-eyed leninists. fie on em.
|
If it's like any other MTV production it will get churned through all it's media channels and outlets.
I think it's funny that people have forgotten that it's entertainment at it's base. |
Unfortunately you can say that about 80% of what being presented as "real news" too.
|
I don't think Colbert or Stewart are funny, especially Stewart (though his daughter is hot), so this makes no difference to me.
I see them as entertainment, no matter how bad it is, and I don't expect the rally to be any different. |

Awesome, these guys are pretty famous so it should bring some much needed attention. Perhaps if it draws enough we can get a real national debate going about some of the extremism at some of these rallies and start drawing people away who are they because "they agree in theory".
Good stuff it should be a lot of fun. |
I could have swore Kristen Stewart of Twilight fame was his daughter. Did someone give me bad information?
EDIT: After a quick and painful Wiki search of Kristen Stewart, John Stewart is her father. Sorry for the creeps I've caused. |
yeah, pearl trade, but I don't think it's the same John Stewart...
Kristen Stewart was born and raised in Los Angeles. Her father, John Stewart, is a stage manager and television producer who has worked for Fox. link goes to wiki wiki. As far as this goes, I just might head up for this. I love John Stewart and Colbert, and the Tea Party makes me want to vomit so horrendously that I fear I would have my anal sphincter wrapped around my tongue. |

I'm excited about the premise of the rally even though I cannot attend. *edit* I see Mr. Leibowitz changed his name officially to Stewart in 2001. Sorry for the thread jack. |

Why do you guys care who someone else does or does not find funny?
|
I just don't buy it.
|
So, what would be a good slogan to put on a sign if attending these rallies?

I think I will go with the moderate sign,
"Can't we all just get along?" |
Man, this thread is moderate!

Moderation requires an incredibly open mind. How does politics represent that in any dynamic? |
i'm not sure that the point of the rally is to get a bunch of people to go to dc in order to stand around being all beige and moderate. i think it's more to get people who aren't of the neo-fascist persuasion to turn out. it's also by extension a challenge to infotainment outlets like faux news, which has been fundamental to creating the tea party by giving it very considerable air time. so you can see how this sort of thing builds on the image of itself. well, on that and millions upon millions of dollars courtesy of those fine kansas koch brothers and other ultra-rightwing capitalist oligarchs.
so moderate in the sense of not the ultra-right. moderate in all kinds of senses. it's an anti-tea party action. you get that, right x-man? |

I am amazed that the DC Metro system doesn't know how to handle rallies and crowds by now. It is clean, but they need to redesign the ticketing process, and create 'express' trains that only go from one station to the mall. Even the parking lots filled up, and I had no idea if there was extra parking (there was a high school close by that they should have directed people to). But, it would have been even nicer if there was a high speed train that would travel from Cleveland or Cincinnati to DC. [insert picture 1041 here] The signs came in three flavors: sane, funny to lefties, and making fun of the right. The 100 Best Signs At The Rally To Restore Sanity And/Or Fear: Pics, Videos, Links, News
One of my favourites: "The Mad Hatter called. He wants his tea party back." |
"Silly Republicans! Tea Parties Are For Little Girls."

actually, I got a kick out of this one, filmed at the Jon Stewart rally:
|
Ok that was funny. Reminds me of Jay Leno and his "street walking."
My favorite sign was one being held by a large breasted young lady in a tight t-shirt that read "I think we can all agree boobs are AWESOME!" I agree. |
Thanks, loquitur, that was hilarious...and just a little bit sad at the same time.
