Dear Iran: Fuck you. Love, Atheists
I've defended Iran on their nuclear program. As far as I can see, there's no evidence to suggest that Iran is developing nuclear weapons in violation of the NPT. I've defended Iran on it being part of an "axis of evil". The term evil doesn't apply to Iran and carries with it religious and mythological connotations.
I will, however, happily berate Iran for what IS wrong there. Quote:
Apostasy—a fancy way of saying rejecting Islamic faith—is a crime punishable by death in Islamic Republic of Iran. Setting aside the totalitarian government and unimaginable crimes against women for just a moment (they're each deserving of their own threads), as a skeptic I find this nightmarish. I've been on the receiving end of hatred because of my lack of religious beliefs, but it was usually just someone being offended and leaving after telling me off. Imagine you spend years breaking yourself from religious indoctrination and then find yourself sentenced to death for finally becoming who you are. It's unspeakable. I would be willing to defend a Christian from a Muslim, a Muslim from a Christian, a Jew from a Christian, and so on, but attacking someone not for believing in another god but for simply existing without such a belief is insane. Iran is fucking insane, and I'm pissed. If you want, there's a petition here, but it seems like a waste of time. Tyranny anywhere is tyranny everywhere. |
Were you previously under the impression that the Iranian government was some sort of paragon of open minded acceptance?
No... no, really. :paranoid:
Seriously, while I agree it's annoying when people lump all Iranians into one mold, this is not surprising in the least.
I figured that atheists might be abused and marginalized, but thrown on death row? No, that I was completely unaware of.
Homosexuals are thrown on death row, you think they'd have more sympathy for atheists?
Will, Iran is ruled by a religious system. What did you expect? It is the law in Iran NOT to be atheist. You would die for proclaiming your beliefs while in Iran. I dunno what kind of stock you placed in them and to be frank, this is probably only first time such an occurrence has been ... publicized ...
I've got to admit - I'm surprised that you're surprised. It's a theocracy, Will. It seems to me that those who don't subscribe to any religion are going to be persecuted before someone who subscribes to the wrong one.

my little inside knowledge here..
apostacy isnt rejecting the islamic faith. apostacy is when you are a muslim, and you then reject the islamic faith. apostasy carried the death sentence under shariah law. how anyone can prove it is beyond me, buts a whole different issue. am i surprised? not in the slighetest. iran is well known for its persecution of anyone non shiite. the zoraostrians fled, the sunnis are under threat and the secularist have all fled. many are here in this country for this reason. read my signature...not the one about worlds king..the other one! |
