COLUMBIA, S.C. – Gov. Mark Sanford admitted Wednesday he's been having an affair with a woman he visited on a secret trip to Argentina and said he'll resign as head of the Republican Governors Association. Sanford, a rumored 2012 presidential candidate, refused to say whether he'll leave office.

"I've let down a lot of people, that's the bottom line," Sanford said at a news conference. He said he's known the woman about eight years, but their relationship turned into something more a year ago while he was on an economic development trip to Argentina.

Sanford, a 49-year-old father of four, choked up during remarks to reporters. He said his wife has known about the affair for the last five months.

Sanford revealed Wednesday morning that he'd gone to Argentina for a seven-day trip. For two days after reporters starting asking questions, his office had said he had gone hiking on the Appalachian Trial.

Meanwhile, first lady Jenny Sanford had told The Associated Press she did not know where her husband went for the Father's Day weekend.

First elected governor in 2002, the former real estate developer has more than year remaining in his second term and is barred by state law from running again.

A former three-term congressman, Sanford most recently snared headlines for his unsuccessful fight to turn aside federal stimulus cash for his state's schools. His vocal battle against the Obama administration — and libertarian, small-government leanings — won praise from conservative pundits. Ultimately, a state court order required him to take the money.

Sanford's announcement came a day after another prominent Republican, Sen. John Ensign of Nevada, apologized to his GOP Senate colleagues after revealing last week that he had an affair with a campaign staffer and was resigning from the GOP leadership.

Sanford was born May 28, 1960, in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., the eldest of four siblings. He earned a bachelor's degree in business from Furman University in 1983 and a master's of business administration from the University of Virginia in 1988.

After working for a couple of years in the financial world in New York, he returned to South Carolina and said he was shaped by his summers working on the family plantation. He served in the U.S. House for three terms before honoring a term limits pledge and leaving office in 2001.

In 2002, he defeated incumbent Democrat Jim Hodges by 4 percentage points to become governor and won re-election in 2006, beating Democratic state Sen. Tommy Moore.

As governor, Sanford has had seemingly endless run-ins with the GOP-dominated Legislature, once bringing pigs to the House chamber to protest pork barrel spending. He also put a "spending clock" outside his office to show how quickly a proposed budget would spend state money.
i just don't know what to think really. I knew something was fishy when his wife, security detail and staff were all giving canned responses on monday....Then the press conference and his voice started cracking and i was just waiting for either the gay affair or just an affair..

still, seems really weird that someone who was setting his sites on a 2012 presidential run would throw it away like this.....

Guys are stupid when there's pussy involved. Yet another example of that.

Yep, pretty much sums up my feelings.

Think that's an innocent accident? Look closely.

Let's all say it together: FUCK YOU, FOX NEWS.

Kinda funny, actually. The (D), in this case, could stand for "Dumbshit".

Cynthetiq 06-24-2009 12:35 PM

or dipshit.

Baraka_Guru 06-24-2009 12:40 PM

or dipstick?

The_Jazz 06-24-2009 12:44 PM

Don't forget "doofus". Or, more appropriately, "dingaling".

Yep this fact is proven again and again. The joke about a man having 2 heads but only enough blood to work one is very accurate.

cone gov had an affair, spitzer prostitute, edwards had an affair, lets not forget the ultimate 6ov selling obama's senate seat.

Was she hot?

Why wouldn't he have this woman come up here? They could have gone hiking on the trail and no one would have thought much of it.

I'm thinking (or at least hoping) that a reporter found out that he was at an airport (or had pictures of him getting off the plane). This reporter was going to report on this if he didn't tell the truth.

filtherton 06-24-2009 03:25 PM

Let me guess: he's a social conservative.

pig 06-24-2009 03:28 PM

Maybe - I heard the reporter *happened* to be in the terminal and recognized him. I hope he went down there to break it off...but I would think that would have been better done by phone in this case. So if his wife knew about it for 5 months, but he decided to go get some strange on Father's Fucking Day, then I have to say that I have less respect for him than I did previously. This does not leave him with much respect. I disagree with much of his politics, but this situation is just sad. 49 year old father of 4 leaves his family on Father's Day to get pound some Argentinian chick, and then he gets busted in the airport? His family has got to be feeling like a big old piece of crappola. I loved his wife's quote "I'm just being a mother...taking care of my children..." (i.e. fuck you Mark, you philandering piece of shit. Some of us have responsibilities...) I'm glad I don't have to deal with it.

In other news, pesky Andre Bauer is already hamming it up to take the SC governor's slot when it comes up. He definitely was throwing Sanford under the bus the whole time he was away. If SC stays Repub, Andre is pretty much a shoe-in. Republican who panders to the elderly and the Christin Right? Check. I wonder what the rumor mill has been like inside the capital this past week...

edit: that first part of the post was a follow up on ASU, not filthy. Of course he's a "social conservative," and a "fiscal conservative," and an "adulterous no-family-values-having-motherfucker conservative..."

Paq 06-24-2009 06:08 PM

he was also in favor of the clinton impeachment..bc he felt the gov't needed more moral fiber...i love hypocrites... oh wait, not love, that other word..what is it...
