I dont expect the ignorance and intolerance that has been perpetuated in this campaign to end on Jan 20. For some, their existence depends on it.

But a call to arms is not the answer.

dk...you can stand behind the door to your home armed to the teeth if it makes you feel safer.

My hope is that most others will seize on the opportunity to bring people together, as difficult as it is likely to be.

I'm sure it will happen, Obama is the uniter, not the divider.

Would you like to see far left? Congressman Dennis Kucinich. Compare Kucinich's presidential campaign promises with Obamas and suddenly it will become outrageously clear that Obama is not even close to being far left. Outrageously.

'If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the problem."

Suggesting that everyone take up arms...with wild claims about the coming "widespread chaos and firefights"...is not part of the solution.

But, hey, if that makes you feel safe and secure, do whats best for you!

You know that's not what I said. Using Dennis Kucinich's positions as a baseline for liberalism, Obama's differing from him in so many ways makes a strong case that Obama isn't car left. I can list the differences (being very familiar with Kucinich's campaign promises).

Will, I suggest you look up the remarkably successful Fabian Society socialists of England. They realized that they could never achieve their aims all in one go, so they set about achieving them piece by piece, one bit accomplished by one party, another bit accomplished by a second, all working towards a discrete end. And look at England now.

Kucinich is honest. I disagree with 99% of everything he says, but at least he's honest and in-your-face about what he wants. Obama is just another Fabian, a leftist in centrist clothing. I have infinitely more respect for Kucinich, though Obama's Chicago pol's talent for obfuscation and grassroots intimidation (Truth Squads? Hello!) make him a far more dangerous adversary.

Side note: Che Guevara would be far, far left. When Obama starts nationalizing companies is when I will consider him far left. There are plenty of things I want to see happen that would be extreme to either side.

And McCain and the republicans aren't far right. When non-Christians are forced to pay higher taxes, work at labor camps, and are being moved to a state like Oregon is when he will be far right.

This is a guilt by association fallacy until you actually compare specific positions and/or behaviors that are similar or the same between Senator Obama and the Fabian Society.

People that don't like Obama very rarely are able to give concrete reasons as to why. Obama may not be the best man for the job, but he's the best to have an honest shot in the past decade.

Disclaimer: Didn't read the entire thread (even the OP). Just responding to thread title:

No, I don't think we will. People are so invested personally in their candidate that if the other one wins they will be bitter and blame their friends who voted oppositely for anything that goes wrong with the country in the next four years.

There's a serious amount of hate on both sides of the line this election.
