Bush and Republicans exploiting 9/11?
 

I just read that George Bush and Republicans will be hold the national republican convention in NY on 9/11/04. Is this blatant exploitation or what?

"Blatant" is the appropriate word. Unless you want to use "shameless". Or "bare-assed obvious." These days apparently, being republican means never being embarassed.

i bet it's goin to be held in manhattan too, where they have a good view of ground zero.

Politics is exactly that, exploiting the right opportunities. Whether it's Dems scaring everyone that Repubs want every child to be poorly educated, especially minorities, women, mentally retarded or whatever pc, oppressed segment of the population du jour the statistics can be skewed to demonstrate, because they are sick at throwing money at a failing enterprise? Or that the edlerly will be left to die in the streets poor and without dignity because they try to fix medicare. Or it could be the republicans exploiting recent terrorist events to convince everyone that 'unreasonable' (although it is no longer called unreasonable, instead kindly refered to as 'less restrictive') searches and seizures are neccesary, due process protections need to be reduced, or that anything they've done so far has actually prevented a daggone thing. It could also be the broad brushed stroke used to paint Dems as socialist welfare hungry anti-americans.

I'm not even sure this qualifies as exploitation though. Where else? Why not NYC? Lots of airports, plenty of convention facilities, in NEED of a good swift kick in the economic backside. and full of voters who could use a little exposure to some different ideas about how things should be. Did the Dems pass it up because they thought it was just 'too gratuitous, and shameful?' I seriously doubt it.

and i dont think it's "beating" somebody to it. dem's are in a much more campaign state than GOP is right now and i dont think they wanted to exploit this.

The Dems should know all about exploitation. They have been exploiting their voter base for decades.

I was there...and nobody, muchless the DNC planned that. Part of it was getting that many greiving liberals in one room. The other part was that Rick Kahn cracked up like a nut. We forgive him and all...but nobody is going to say that it wasn't his fault....

So what you're saying is that the Wellstone thing was spontaneous opportunism then? I think I would have had more respect for them if it WAS planned. The Dems really showed their true colors.

The issue isn't that it is being held in NYC. That's great news. They can use the business.

The issue is the date of the convention and the perception that they will exploit the events of Sept. 11, 2001.

If you were in charge of the Republican Party wouldn't you want to exploit Sept 11th for all it's worth?

Democrats would've done the same thing. It's hard not to take advantage of such a situation in the political world.

They were in office, they "handled" the situation. It comes as no surprise they were first in line to pat themselves on the back and to remind us of what good boys they are. :rolleyes:

Politics have always thrived on opportunism. Always will. Its not surprising and its certainly not underneath any political party to exploit a tragedy. Pick your favorite flavor of exploitation. Choose wisely :D

exploitation ha, Reb. must finally be catching up to the Dem. on that. I love how certain canidates bring up people to tell how the canidated helped their lives. Everything political revolves around exploiting things and people.
Just you watch, the Dem. will have a tv spot run where the canidate talks to someone who lost all his money on stocks, and now needs to go on welfare, instead of going out and getting a job.

This is one of the saddest things I've ever heard. Even if I give politicians the benefit of the doubt and assume that they have only noble intentions at heart, they always do something like this to disappoint me.

This is the most tasteless exploitation I have ever heard of. True, 9/11 was an attack on our nation and "belongs" to all of us. But how disrespectful to the memories of the people who died (including the democrats who died!!!) to turn this date into a political rally. I believe shame is a concept that should be reintroduced into the political arena, and SHAME on them!

Let's get the facts straight. The convention will not be on September 11th. It will be close to it. I see nothing wrong with this. September 11th was something this president dealt with, and in my opinion, dealt with quite well.

I think that everyone is missing an important point. Politics is exploitation in action. It is inherent in our society because politics has become a seeries of media driven events. We seem to have been programed to react to 30 - 60 second sound bites and form opinions from these mini presentations. If we agree with the action, we are fine, if we disagree then the same action becomes an example of exploitation. Both sides do it, and as a society we eat this stuff up. Few people are willing to examine the facts and form an opinion; it is much easier for us to react to a sound bite or wait for an analyst to tell us what to think.

Gore being elected wouldn't have changed the fact politicians would have used this to their advantage. I bet somewhere some "my entire arguments fits onto an eight word sign" folk will protest the date.

Dems, republicans, green, libertarian- they all exploit whatever they can in order to gain an advantage. Its just that sometimes it just becomes too obvious that they are playing on your heartstrings rather than on your intelect. All groups do it, iregardless of ideology. Its just a matter of who hides it better.

Exploitation is everywhere so this doesn't surprise me though that doesn't mean i think its great.

Exploitation only becomes known if someone gets caught for it and that almsot never happens.

Besides if you think the *other* side is exploiting more then your own group has expoited your mind to think they are.
