Repubs say NO to Mom?
 

Earlier this week. the House voted on one of their many innocuous resolutions...this time to honor mothers and mothers day:
After a unanimous voice vote in support of the resolution, a Repub called for a recorded vote....The final vote: Dems - 224 ayes, Repubs - 178 Noes

These guys vote for resolutions to call Gen Petaeus a great American patriot (when he was mocked by MoveOn.org) or to honor Charleton Heston (for his life achievements).or to recognize Christmas (as a statement against the secular war on Christmas)...but wont vote for mom?

When asked why the GOP switched their votes, House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-OH) said, “Oh, we just wanted to make sure that everyone was on record in support of Mother’s Day.” (Even though he was on record against Mother’s Day.)

No....you are looking at the voice vote (vote #274 - 21 not present) that proceeded the roll call vote (vote #275)

BTW, I know it was just a technical maneuver..but a stupid one.

what do you mean? I'm don't understand the roll call vote vs. voice vote.

The first vote was a voice vote and everyone present voted yes (412-0, 21 not present/not voting)

Then a Repub asked for a roll call vote and the second vote resulted (237-178)

It was a procedural tactic by the Republicans with the intent of stalling the House from moving on to other more important business.

As I said, it was a procedural move to stall the House from other pressing business....it was just stupid to do with with this resolution.
They succeeded in delaying a vote on a Dem housing foreclosure relief bill until the following day (yesterday)...and that delayed the vote on the Iraq war funding bill until next week. That gives the Repubs the weekend to trash the Dem war funding bill and suggest that the Dems dont support the troops.

and people wonder why congress' rating is so fricking low

It's very comforting to know that not only was there a rationale behind this vote, but that it was a thoroughly valid one as well.

Wow...I never realized how much my high school mock congress is like the Real Congress.. motions to dismiss at every chance, recalls, and rethink votes because people weren't ready.

No, 21 did not vote either aye or nay. There were 11 Dems and 10 Rep. that no voted.

And 44/54 co sponsors were Rep.

It was a motion to reconsider and the Dems Tabled the motion.... I was misreading it a first I stand corrected.

Just for the sake of argument, I'd like to point out that it takes some effort to get a low approval rating as a mother. :)

On the other hand, it apparently doesn't take Congress much effort to get a low approval rating. All they have to do is nothing.

I just thought it was funny that 178 Republicans wanted to reconsider their "aye" vote (what they really wanted to do was keep stalling so important votes would be postponed).

Unlike your Obama quote, which was never said by Obama....the Bush quote is not a misrepresentation. It is from a WH transcript. The difference should be obvious.
