Texas speaker claims unchecked power

Chaos In Texas House Over Speaker Fight   click to show

This is pretty scary. Can he really not recognize a motion under the rules? Are those same rules present in our congress? If so I say we act now to change the rules to make sure no one ever gets unchecked power.

To me this flys in the face of democracy and every single person in America should be appalled by this. Our system has been built on community government and when a single person claims dictatorship of that government we are in trouble.

I currently work for a Texas state rep, and yes what Craddick is doing is fully leal.

Our state constituion is set up i a very strange way. There are even more powerful motions that are encted every session, like our Lt. Governor can completely close out any bill by not allowing it to be sceduled for a vote in the Senate.. no ifs ands or buts.

It's not scary, because they still have to ru for re-election and are answerable to their contituents.

What would happen if Craddick were to get sick and have to miss a day or if he got in a "fender bender" and was late to a session. Could the next in line accept those amendments?

Or what if... just what if... he died of natural causes and a mild case of a single bullet hole in the forhead? What if? More importantly... Did that articule describe him as a mud salesman?

Um.. don't know what all this asssination talk is about, but today is the last day of session for the next two years in the Texas house. So there will be a whole new process for the next speaker.

That is why the speakers have so much power here, session is Jan-May 28th ony once every two years. To boot it is unconstitutional to go over-budet and into debt. Therefore there is a LOT that absolutely must get done and someone needs to be there to keep things progressing.

If they need someone to remove him from his podium, I'll volunteer. I've never been a fan of his, and this behavior is unacceptable from a 3 year old, let alone a civil servant. He doesn't need a bullet in the brain, but he should get the spanking of his life.

will, little offense intended, but what do you think you're going to do as an admitted pacifist? and would you TRULY do the same thing if it was a liberal, peace loving, gun hating politician doing the same thing?

I'm not suggesting beating him or shooting him or anything. I'm suggesting putting pressure on him.

A liberal isn't likely to try and pull something like this, btw.

dk...actually, Pelosi just ended the "Hastert Rule" in the House. Under the former Speaker and the Repub majority, the rule requred that a bill have support of the "majority of the majority" before being alllowed to be brought to the floor for a vote.

This meant that any bill that had bi-partisan support, but not the support of the majority of the Repubs was not allowed to be considered. The two most aggregious examples were the Repub majority energy bill that was a payoff to big oil and the medicare reform bill that was a payoff to the pharmaceuticals. There were alternatives to both that had bi-partisan support, but were never considered.
