"Reds" on DVD after 25 years....and what about those "centrist" politics of yours ???

My questions and supporting research here are aimed at folks who think of themselves as in "the middle" politically. If you really are a "centrist", why do you think that Harvard educated journalist John Reed, labor organizer and union founder William Haywood, and later, local NAACP leader Robert Franklin Williams, were hounded out of the US by government authorities, while folks who thought of themselves as "centrists", looked on in silence, or simply ignored the government oppression, and voted for Hoover, Nixon, Reagan, and the Bushes? Do you see our political history of the last 100 years, or your own political POV, for that matter.....more "off center", after reading some or all of this OP?

It has been 25 years since the release of Warren Beatty's film, a 3 hour, "epic" motion picture; titled <a href="http://imdb.com/title/tt0082979/">"Reds"</a>, the story of American journalist, John Reed, author of the book <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Shook-World-Penguin-Twentieth-Century-Classics/dp/0140182934">"Ten Days that Shook the World"</a>, was released in 1981. The "Reds" DVD was not released until late last year. John Reed died in Moscow from a typhoid epidemic in 1920. His body is interred near Lenin's, in a Kremlin wall.

Artist's Life
<b>Monday, Feb. 27, 1939</b>

At Harvard, where his family name is so illustrious as to be a liability, Robert Hallowell was Lampoon president (1909-10), a member of Hasty Pudding, Signet, Stylus, DKE, and a great friend of rollicking John Reed. When a group including Classmate Walter Lippmann and Herbert Croly founded the liberal New Republic in 1914, Radical John Reed encouraged Hallowell of the banking Hallowells to take the post of treasurer. Ten years later he suddenly quit, went to Paris, arranged a divorce, became an artist. At 52, Robert Hallowell died.

...Robert Hallowell was not a great artist, but he was a natural one. He did vivid, honest water colors and <b>first-rate portraits, including one of Revolutionist John Reed, which now hangs in Harvard's Adams House</b>....
IMO, no major motion picture studio would support the production or distribution of "Reds" today........

.......In New York in 1912, for anyone who looked around as sharply as John Reed, the contrasts of wealth and poverty stunned the senses. He began writing for the Masses, a new magazine edited by Max Eastman (brother of the socialist-feminist Crystal Eastman) and penned a manifesto: "Poems, stories, and drawings, rejected by the capitalist press on account of their excellence, will find a welcome in this magazine." The Masses was alive, not a party organ, but a party, with anarchists and socialists, artists and writers, and undefinable rebels of all sorts in its pages: Carl Sandburg and Amy Lowell, William Carlos Williams, Upton Sinclair. And from abroad, Bertrand Russell, Gorky, Picasso.
The times trembled with class struggle. Reed went to Lawrence, Massachusetts, where women and children had walked out of the textile mills and were carrying on a heartrending, heroic strike with the help of the IWW (the revolutionary Industrial Workers of the World) and the Socialist Party. Reed met Bill Haywood, the IWW leader (in one description, "a great battered hulk of a man, with one eye gone, and an eminent look in the other"). From Haywood he learned of the strike of 25,000 silk workers across the Hudson River in Paterson, asking for an eight-hour day and being clubbed by the police. The press was not reporting any of this, so Reed went to Paterson. It was not in him to stand off and take notes. He walked the picket line, was arrested for refusing to move on, spent four days in jail..........

......John Reed's body was buried near the Kremlin wall as a hero. But in truth, his soul does not belong to any Establishment, there or here or anywhere. Strangely, in the year 1981, sixty years after his death, millions of Americans will learn of John Reed because of a motion picture. If even a tiny fraction of these are led thereby to think about war and injustice, art and commitment, about enlarging friendship beyond national boundaries for the possibility of a better world, that is a huge accomplishment for one brief, intensely-lived life.
He made the speech linked here. It is remarkably similar to a speech made 15 years later by highly decorated US Marines Major Gen. Smedley Butler:
Quote:

Baku Congress of the Peoples of the East
Appendix to the report of the Fourth Session

John Reed’s speech:

I represent here the revolutionary workers of one of the great imperialist powers, the United States of America, which exploits and oppresses the peoples of the colonies.

You, the peoples of the East, the peoples of Asia, have not yet experienced for yourselves the rule of America. You know and hate the British, French and Italian imperialists, and probably you think that ‘free America’ will govern better, will liberate the peoples of the colonies, will feed and defend them.

No. The workers and peasants of the Philippines, the peoples of Central America and the islands of the Caribbean, they know what it means to live under the rule of ‘free America’.

Take, for example, the peoples of the Philippines. In 1898 the Filipinos rebelled against the cruel colonial government of Spain, and the Americans helped them. But after the Spaniards had been driven out the Americans did not want to go away.

Then the Filipinos rose against the Americans, and this time the ‘liberators’ started to kill them, their wives and children: they tortured them and eventually conquered them. They seized their land and forced them to work and make profits for American capitalists.

The Americans have promised the Filipinos independence. Soon an independent Filipino republic will be proclaimed. But this does not mean that the American capitalists will leave or that the Filipinos will not continue to work to make profits for them. The American capitalists have given the Filipino leaders a share of their profits — they have given them government jobs, land and money — they have created a Filipino capitalist class which also lives on the profits created by the workers — and in whose interest it is to keep the Filipinos in slavery......

.....Mexico is another rich country which is close to the USA. In Mexico live a backward people who were enslaved for centuries, first by the Spaniards and then by foreign capitalists. There, after many years of civil war, the people formed their own government, not a proletarian government but a democratic one, which wanted to keep the wealth of Mexico for the Mexicans and tax the foreign capitalists. The American capitalists did not concern themselves with sending bread to the hungry Mexicans. No, they initiated a counter-revolution in Mexico, in which Madero, the first revolutionary President, was killed. Then, after a three-year struggle, the revolutionary regime was restored, with Carran a as President. The American capitalists made another counter-revolution and killed Carranza, establishing once more a government friendly to themselves.

In North America itself there are ten million Negroes who possess neither political or civil rights, despite the fact that by law they are equal citizens. With the purpose of distracting the attention of the American workers from the capitalists, their exploiters, the latter stir up hatred against the Negroes, provoking war between the white and black races. The Negroes, whom they lawlessly burn alive, are beginning to see that their only hope lies in armed resistance to the white bandits.......
....and Gen. Smedley Butler, in 1933:

.....I spent 33 years [in the Marines] and during that period I spent most of my time being a high class muscle man for Big Business, for Wall Street and the bankers. In short, I was a racketeer for capitalism.... I helped make Mexico and especially Tampico safe for American oil interests in 1914. I helped make Haiti and Cuba a decent place for the National City Bank to collect revenues in. I helped purify Nicaragua for the international banking house of Brown Brothers in 1909-1912. I brought light to the Dominican Republic for American sugar interests in 1916. I helped make Honduras "right" for the American fruit companies in 1903. In China in 1927, I helped see to it that Standard Oil went its way unmolested.....
.....some of the cremated remains of American labor organizer, socialist, and founder of the IWW union, "Big Bill" Haywood are interred at the Kremlin, too:

.....When Boyce retired as WFM president in 1902, he recommended Haywood and Charles Moyer assume leadership of the rapidly growing organization. It was not an easy arrangement. Moyer was cautious by nature, favoring negotiations over strikes and violence. Haywood, on the other hand, was volatile, impulsive and inclined toward radical confrontation. <b>Haywood was a powerful speaker, and was a master at rallying working class audiences. The campaign for an eight-hour work day became one of Haywood's principal causes. He would shout, "Eight hours of work, eight hours of play, eight hours of sleep-- eight hours a day!"</b>

From 1902 the WFM and the mine operators and government of Colorado were locked in the Colorado Labor Wars, "the closest the United States has ever approached outright class warfare." The war took 33 lives, including both union and non-union workers. In one single, bloody incident at an Independence, Colorado train depot on June 4, 1904, 13 non-union miners were killed by a powerful explosion as they waited for a train. Haywood was suspected of being behind the explosion, and a virtual open season on unionists ensued.

Haywood was a Socialist and an atheist, but hardly a great thinker. He said "Socialism is so plain, so clear, so simple that when a person becomes an intellectual he doesn't understand socialism." Christianity, he said, "was all nonsense, based on that profane compilation of fables called the Bible."....

......In 1908, Haywood was ousted by Moyer from his executive postion with the WFM. Haywood turned his attention to the Industrial Workers of the World (the "Wobblies"). In 1915, Haywood became the formal head of the I.W.W. He led textile strikes in Massaschusetts and New Jersey and helped recruit the over three million mine, mill, and factory workers that at one time or another were Wobblies. In 1918, Haywood was convicted of violating a federal espionage and sedition act by calling a strike during wartime. He served a year in Leavenworth, then jumped bond in 1921 while out on appeal. Haywood fled to Moscow where he became a trusted advisor to the new Bolshevik government. Haywood died in Moscow in 1928. <b>Half of his ashes were buried in the Kremlin near his friend John Reed and not far from Lenin's tomb, an urn containing the other half of his ashes was sent to Chicago and buried near a monument to the Haymarket anarchists who first inspired his life of radicalism.</b>

.....Not only was Williams very upset and disgusted with the oppression against his people, but as with many, felt that the Vietnam war was a great wrongness. Williams didn't chew on his words, either. He knew what he thought and felt about the horror of Imperialist wars.

<i>The american people cannot hide behind the excuse that they are not doing it, that they are not committing these crimes. They are actually responsible for these crimes because these crimes are being committed in the name of the American people by a government that states it is a government of the people, for the people and by the people. THEODORE ROOSEVELT

....The New Nationalism was not a shallow piece of rhetoric thrown together for the campaign; it represented a carefully thought-through analysis of American society and the role that government ought to play. Roosevelt had been intuitively moving in this direction during his second term, but he found the historical and philosophical analysis he needed in a book by Herbert Croly entitled The Promise of American Life (1909). Croly argued that there were two basic strands in American political thought, which he termed Hamiltonian and Jeffersonian....

....Roosevelt read the book and grew very excited, as a number of ideas with which he had been toying now fell into place. In his famous speech at Ossowatomie, Kansas, on August 31, 1910, he sounded the keynote of what would become his campaign theme in 1912.

The old nationalism, he claimed, had been used by sinister, special interests. He now proposed a New Nationalism of dynamic democracy that would recognize the inevitability of economic concentration; to counter the power of the giant corporations, Roosevelt proposed bringing them under complete federal control, so as to protect the interests of the laboring man and the consumer.

The importance of the speech lies less in its immediate campaign connotation than in the fact that it contains the political and intellectual kernel of the modern American welfare state........

.....It is half melancholy and half amusing to see the way in which well-meaning people gather to do honor to the men who, in company with John Brown, and under the lead of Abraham Lincoln, faced and solved the great problems of the nineteenth century, while, at the same time, these same good people nervously shrink from, frantically denounce, those who are trying to meet the problems of the twentieth century in the spirit which was accountable for the successful resolution of the problems of Lincoln's time.

Of that generation of men to whom we owe so much, the man to whom we owe most, is of course, Lincoln. Part of our debt to him is because he forecast our present struggle and saw the way out. He said: --

"I hold that while man exists it is his duty to improve not only his own condition, but to assist in ameliorating mankind."

And again: --

"Labor is prior to, and independent of, capital. Capital is only the fruit of labor, and could never have existed if labor had not first existed. <b>Labor is the superior of capital, and deserves much the higher consideration.

"If that remark was original with me, I should be even more strongly denounced as a communist agitator than I shall be anyhow. It is Lincoln's. I am only quoting it; and that is one side; that is the side the capitalist should hear. Now, let the workingman hear his side.</b>

"Capital has its rights, which are as worthy of protection as any other rights... Nor should this lead to a war upon the owners of property. Property is the fruit of labor;... property is desirable; is a positive good in the world."

And then comes a thoroughly Lincolnlike sentence: --

"Let not him who is houseless pull down the house of another, but let him work diligently and build one for himself, thus by example assuring that his own shall be safe from violence when built."

It seems to me that, in these words, Lincoln took substantially the attitude that we ought to take; he showed the proper sense of proportion in his relative estimates of capital and labor, of human rights and property rights. Above all, in this speech, as in many others, he taught a lesson in wise kindliness and charity; an indispensable lesson to us of today. But this wise kindliness and charity never weakened his arm or numbed his heart. We cannot afford weakly to blind ourselves to the actual conflict which faces us to-day. The issue is joined, and we must fight or fail.

In every wise struggle for human betterment one of the main objects, and often the only object, has been to achieve in large measure equality of opportunity. In the struggle for this great end, nations rise from barbarism to civilization, and through it people press forward from one stage of enlightenment to the next. One of the chief factors in progress is the destruction of special privilege. The essence of any struggle for healthy liberty has always been, and must always be, to take from some one man or class of men the right to enjoy power, or wealth, or position, or immunity, which has not been earned by service to his or their fellows. That is what you fought for in the Civil War, and that is what we strive for now.

<b>At many stages in the advance of humanity, this conflict between the men who possess more than they have earned and the men who have earned more than they possess is the central condition of progress. In our day it appears as the struggle of free men to gain and hold the right of self-government as against the special interests, who twist the methods of free government into machinery for defeating the popular will.</b> At every stage, and under all circumstances, the essence of the struggle is to equalize opportunity, destroy privilege, and give to the life and citizenship of every individual the highest possible value both to himself and to the commonwealth. That is nothing new. All I ask in civil life is what you fought for in the Civil War. I ask that civil life be carried on according to the spirit in which the army was carried on. You never get perfect justice, but the effort in handling the army was to bring to the front the men who could do the job. Nobody grudged promotion to Grant, or Sherman, or Thomas, or Sheridan, because they earned it. The only complaint was when a man got promotion which he did not earn.

Practical equality of opportunity for all citizens, when we achieve it, will have two great results. First, every man will have a fair chance to make of himself all that in him lies; to reach the highest point to which his capacities, unassisted by special privilege of his own and unhampered by the special privilege of others, can carry him, and to get for himself and his family substantially what he has earned. Second, equality of opportunity means that the commonwealth will get from every citizen the highest service of which he is capable. No man who carries the burden of the special privileges of another can give to the commonwealth that service to which it is fairly entitled.

I stand for the square deal. But when I say that I am for the square deal, I mean not merely that I stand for fair play under the present rules of the game, but that I stand for having those rules changed so as to work for a more substantial equality of opportunity and of reward for equally good service. One word of warning, which, I think, is hardly necessary in Kansas. When I say I want a square deal for the poor man, I do not mean that I want a square deal for the man who remains poor because he has not got the energy to work for himself. If a man who has had a chance will not make good, then he has got to quit. And you men of the Grand Army, you want justice for the brave man who fought, and punishment for the coward who shirked his work. Is not that so?....

....<b>We must have complete and effective publicity of corporate affairs, so that the people may know beyond peradventure whether the corporations obey the law and whether their management entitles them to the confidence of the public.</b> It is necessary that laws should be passed to prohibit the use of corporate funds directly or indirectly for political purposes; it is still more necessary that such laws should be thoroughly enforced. Corporate expenditures for political purposes, and especially such expenditures by public service corporations, have supplied one of the principal sources of corruption in our political affairs.

It has become entirely clear that we must have government supervision of the capitalization, not only of public service corporations, including, particularly, railways, but of all corporations doing an interstate business. I do not wish to see the nation forced into the ownership of the railways if it can possibly be avoided, and the only alternative is thoroughgoing and effective regulation, which shall be based on a full knowledge of all the facts, including a physical valuation of property. This physical valuation is not needed, or, at least, is very rarely needed, for fixing rates; but it is needed as the basis of honest capitalization. ....
......I believe that the officers, and, especially, the directors, of corporations should be held personally responsible when any corporation breaks the law...

.....No man should receive a dollar unless that dollar has been fairly earned. Every dollar received should represent a dollar's worth of service rendered -- not gambling in stocks, but service rendered. The really big fortune, the swollen fortune, by the mere fact of its size acquires qualities which differentiate it in kind as well as in degree from what is possessed by men of relatively small means. Therefore, I believe in a graduated income tax on big fortunes, and in another tax which is far more easily collected and far more effective -- a graduated inheritance tax on big fortunes, properly safeguarded against evasion and increasing rapidly in amount with the size of the estate...

.....Moreover, I believe that the natural resources must be used for the benefit of all our people, and not monopolized for the benefit of the few, and here again is another case in which I am accused of taking a revolutionary attitude. People forget now that one hundred years ago there were public men of good character who advocated the nation selling its public lands in great quantities, so that the nation could get the most money out of it, and giving it to the men who could cultivate it for their own uses. We took the proper democratic ground that the land should be granted in small sections to the men who were actually to till it and live on it. Now, with the water power, with the forests, with the mines, we are brought face to face with the fact that there are many people who will go with us in conserving the resources only if they are to be allowed to exploit them for their benefit. That is one of the fundamental reasons why the special interests should be driven out of politics. Of all the questions which can come before this nation, short of the actual preservation of its existence in a great war, there is none which compares in importance with the great central task of leaving this land even a better land for our descendants than it is for us, and training them into a better race to inhabit the land and pass it on. Conservation is a great moral issue, for it involves the patriotic duty of insuring the safety and continuance of the nation. Let me add that the health and vitality of our people are at least as well worth conserving as their forests, waters, lands, and minerals, and in this great work the national government must bear a most important part......
So why does it seem that the prominent dissenters from the "status quo" of imperialistic corporatism in the US are either presidents or generals, or folks who seem so radical to the rest of us that they are driven out of the country?

<b>Do huge numbers of folks who think of themselves as "centrists", but who are actually much more to the right in their political thinking, as indicated by their lack of vehement objection to the following repression</b> of actual centrist and left leaning folks, and their tendency to vote for the Nixons, the Reagans, and the Bushes, result in suppression of populists and populism, and a true American "left"?:

Could the "answers" lie in reporting like this?.......

Letter to the Editor Earns 81-Year-Old Pa. Man a Visit From Secret Service Agents

BETHLEHEM, Pa. Jan 21, 2007 (AP)— An elderly man who wrote in a letter to the editor about Saddam Hussein's execution that "they hanged the wrong man" got a visit from Secret Service agents concerned he was threatening President Bush.

The letter by Dan Tilli, 81, was published in Monday's edition of The Express-Times of Easton, Pa. It ended with the line, "I still believe they hanged the wrong man."

Tilli said the statement was not a threat. "I didn't say who I could've meant (Osama) bin Laden," he said Friday.

Two Secret Service agents questioned Tilli at his Bethlehem apartment Thursday, briefly searching the place and taking pictures of him, he said.

The Secret Service confirmed the encounter. Bob Slama, special agent in charge of the Secret Service's Philadelphia office, said it was the agency's duty to investigate.....

Fear of the written word Some 80 years of spying on authors from the mortally suspicious FBI;
Reviewed by Donald Newlove, author of "Those Drinking Days" and "First Paragraphs.". Chicago Tribune Chicago, Ill.: Mar 22, 1992. pg. 3

Abstract (Document Summary)

The earliest FBI files on radical writers date from 1911 and are about the poet Ezra Pound, whose file would grow to 1,512 pages, and journalist John Reed (author of "Ten Days that Shook the World" and, eventually, the hero of Warren Beatty's film "Reds"). Only with difficulty can one imagine a young FBI agent in 1911 seeking "radical" meanings in Pound's polyglot lyrics and translations of Provencal poetry. And what of some later agent's midnight hours spent trying to crack "The Cantos"?

"The people I found and interviewed," Robins writes, "are those who once worked for and/or with the FBI or people who currently work for and/or with the FBI; relatives, friends and colleagues, both well-disposed and otherwise, of the deceased writers; living writers who have been subject to FBI scrutiny; and writers who have lived through dictatorships as well as democracies." This includes about 35 living writers, some of whom have died since being interviewed.

The book covers FBI investigations into the writing community from pre-World War I days through Vietnam and after, with emphasis on the Spanish Civil War, pre-World War II, the McCarthy era and the Korean War. FBI files on the famed dead include those on James Agee, Nelson Algren, Sherwood Anderson, Jane Bowles, Pearl S. Buck, Erskine Caldwell, Truman Capote, Willa Cather, John Cheever, John Dos Passos, T.S. Eliot, William Faulkner, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Dashiell Hammett, Lillian Hellman, Ernest Hemingway, James Jones, Sinclair Lewis, Jack London, Robert Lowell, Carson McCullers, Henry Miller, John O'Hara, Eugene O'Neill, Dorothy Parker, Carl Sandburg, William Saroyan, Irwin Shaw, Gertrude Stein, John Steinbeck, James Thurber, Thornton Wilder, Tennessee Williams, Thomas Wolfe and Richard Wright. And those are just the highlights.
I think that we have had these "profit minded" imperialists dominating our national political leadership for the last 40 years, precisely because most Americans are "in the middle of the road", and I think it is killing the country and causing major world tensions and misery. This is what Americans have "voted in", for nearly fifty years, with the possible exceptions of Carter and Clinton:

The Ellingwood Meeting, Page 1
After Chronicle Reporter Seth Rosenfeld filed suit under the U.S. Freedom of Information Act challenging the deletions, a federal appeals court found that the memo was not about law enforcement, but unlawful FBI intelligence activities concerning the University of California.

The court ordered the FBI to release the full memo, which reveals that the late Herbert Ellingwood, Governor Reagan's Legal Affairs Secretary, met with DeLoach at FBI Headquarters to discuss the Reagan Administration's plans for the "destruction of disruptive elements on college campuses." According to the memo, Ellingwood said that the Reagan Administration planned to "hound" the protest groups and was considering using tax investigations and "psychological warfare" against them. The uncensored memo also reveals that Ellingwood asked the FBI for "intelligence" information to use against protest groups, that the FBI had secretly given the Reagan Administration such assistance in the past, and that Hoover approved Ellingwood's request by writing "O.K." at the end of the memo.

Samuel Prescott Bush
From SourceWatch

Father of Prescott Sheldon Bush, grandfather to George Herbert Walker Bush (Poppy), great-grandfather to George Walker Bush (Dubya).

Sam Bush was in his era to Remington Arms what Dick Cheney is to Halliburton in ours. Son of an Episcopal minister, he switched to a darker religion. Sam started out as low-management for railroads, where he made the connections needed to move over to Buckeye Steel Castings Company. Buckeye harbored railroad strike-breaker sentiment from the president on down. It's founder was member of the "Cleveland Gatling Gun Battery",[1] called a military and social organization, set up in 1878, the year after nationwide railroad strikes.

This guns and railroad connection returns for World War I, when Buckeye Steel produced gun barrels and shell casings, and Sam Bush was moved by his patrons into the position of chief of the Ordnance, Small Arms and Ammunition Section of the War Industries Board. Bush took national responsibility for government assistance to and relations with Remington and other weapons companies.[2] This was during the time that Buckeye Steel was casting gun barrels and Bush was president of Buckeye.

Preacher's son Bush looks innocent until you are informed that his patron, Percy Rockefeller took control of Remington Arms in 1914. Frank Rockefeller was president of Buckeye Steel for three years from 1905-1908, followed by Sam Bush from 1908-1927, throughout the WWI years and the gunbarrel sales era of Buckeye.[3] In 1915 a new Remington plant was constructed, operational by 1916 for the first world war, just in time to get a million rifle order from Russia.[4], [5] 67% of all the ammunition used in WWI by the US, Britain and Russia was sold by "Merchants of Death" Remington. Somebody got a no-bid contract on gun barrels for their company.

Pumping up nations war aspirations is good business for some, and the Bush family has been engaged in it for four generations.

Samuel Bush donated a son Prescott Sheldon Bush to the marriage of Dorothy Walker, daughter of George Herbert Walker. The name Walker thence comes in the middle of two George Bush presidents.

What Should We Make of the Charge Linking the Bush Family Fortune to Nazism?
By Herbert Parmet

<i>Mr. Parmet is Distinguished Professor Emeritus of History at the City University of New York and the author of George Bush: The Life of a Lone Star Yankee (1997) and Eisenhower and the American Crusades (1972).

Editor's Note: Over the course of the past month several articles have been published on the Internet and in a handful of print publications that raised questions about the financial ties between the founder of the Bush dynasty and certain Nazi businessmen. We wondered what to make of the story and asked Herbert Parmet to investigate. This is his report.</i>

<a href="http://hnn.us/articles/1810.html">Link to documents</a>

...... Understandably, the American media has indeed been skittish about the Bush-Nazi story. The association of the Tarpley-Chaitkin book with the organization headed by the Lyndon LaRouche organization (published by the Executive Intelligence Review of Washington, a LaRouchian press) has not been helpful, to say the least. Nor has the sensationalist tone and dubious message of Loftus’s The War Against the Jews. One prominent critic of the administration in Washington, journalist Joe Conason, while acknowledging that the “involvement of Prescott Sr. and other members of the American business aristocracy with Nazi-era industry was shameful,” protests that “neither his offenses, nor the Republican Party’s politics of personal destruction, can justify using such [smear] tactics. Imputing Nazi sympathies to the President or his family ought to beneath his adversaries.” After a story on the allegations appeared in the Polish edition of Newsweek, it was “spiked” by the news magazine’s American version. Major U.S. outlets, Buchanan contends, have also bypassed a chance to investigate the story “when information regarding discovery of the documents was presented to them.” Although carried by <a href="http://www.commondreams.org/headlines03/1018-01.htm">the Associated Press</a>, few members picked it up. One that did, Newsday on New York’s Long Island, ran it under the headline “Bush Ancestor’s Bank Seized by Gov’t.”

A notable exception to the skepticism about Buchanan has been the New Hampshire Gazette. Published as a fortnightly in Portsmouth with a circulation of some seven thousand and owned and edited by journalist Steven Fowle, a descendant of the Daniel Fowle who first brought it out in 1756 (making it, “the nation’s oldest newspaper”), it has, to date, run two Buchanan stories plus his interview with John Loftus. Fowle, called by a writer for the St. Petersburg Times, an example of “Yankee Spunk,” explained that he thought it vital to gauge to what extent the Bush family fortune was derived from the Nazis. “If it’s true, it ought to be said,” he emphasized, “and it’s not my fault that it’s ugly.”

Asked to account for the skittishness of most of the media, he responded by doubting that the president’s staff would care much about revelations in his paper and added that most of the other media outlets “don’t have the courage to stick their necks out if it involves challenging power. The only trouble with that is that challenging power is their job.”

Conason, of course, is right. But, at least to some extent, it did happen, even if the details are far from clear. As with all such examples of infatuation with power, or the control of power, or the interests of sheer survival, the story should be told. As John F. Kennedy once said, “let the chips fall where they may.”

The most judicious and succinct appraisal of all this was offered by Christopher Simpson ten years ago in n a book called The Splendid Blond Beast: Money, Law and Genocide in the Twentieth Century:

<i>By 1944 and 1945, leaders of major German companies such as automaker Daimler Benz, electrical manufacturers AEG and Siemans, and most of Germany’s large mining, steelmaking, chemical, and construction companies found themselves deeply compromised by their exploitation of concentration camp labor, theft, and in some cases complicity in mass murder. They committed those crimes not so much out of ideological conviction, but more often as a means of preserving their influence within Germany’s economy and society. For much of the German economic elite, their cooperation in atrocities was offered to Hitler’s government in exchange for its aid in maintaining their status.</i>

All this, especially considering the number of American businesses that were engaged in the German market, says more about finance and capitalism than about ideology. It is a story of power, totalitarianism on one hand, and sheer greed and economic survival on the other – and with no relationship to “morality.” We need to do more than merely sift through the essence of Buchanan's assertions, as troubling as they may be, to appreciate the value of his labors, and wonder at the contribution to public knowledge of Steven Fowle’s maverick newspaper.

What all this means for the reputation of Prescott Bush's descendants should be as relevant as Joseph P. Kennedy’s for his descendants, just as it was for the connection of the Dulleses with Sullivan and Cromwell. Similar associations did not keep John Foster Dulles from becoming secretary of state or his brother Allen from heading the C.I.A. Nor did it stop Averell Harriman from becoming governor of New York.

Industrial Penetration
<b>Monday, Jun. 14, 1926</b>

The descendants of Georg von Giesche have operated in Upper Silesia, gathering into their Bergwerke Georg von Giesche Gesellschaft Erben (Estate) zinc mines (the largest in Europe), bituminous coal fields (present production 3,500,000 tons yearly), lead mines, concentrating plants, smelting works, melting furnaces, rolling mills, agricultural lands, 20,000 employes. The ancestor in 1704 willed that no other than his lineal descendants might own stock in his Estate. But War and aftermath have impoverished these descendants. They had to appeal to the Anaconda Copper Co. and to William Averell Harriman (who has spent much time in Europe since the War snapping up industrial bargains) to refinance them.

Last week President Cornelius E. Kelly of Anaconda returned to Manhattan, told that, for $10,000,000 down and the assurance of spending $10,000,000 more on improvements, <b>Anaconda and Harriman are getting control, 51% of stock, in the Estate's Polish assets. Anaconda men, who speak German, will be sent to operate the various works by U. S. methods. The Estate itself will operate what little remains of its German possessions across the Polish-German border.</b>

How Bush's grandfather helped Hitler's rise to power

Rumours of a link between the US first family and the Nazi war machine have circulated for decades. Now the Guardian can reveal how repercussions of events that culminated in action under the Trading with the Enemy Act are still being felt by today's president

Heir to the Holocaust - Page 2

....In 1980, when George H.W. Bush was elected vice president, he placed his father's family inherence in a blind trust. The trust was managed by his old friend and quail hunting partner, William "Stamps" Farish III. Bush's choice of Farish to manage the family wealth is quite revealing in that it demonstrates that the former president might know exactly where some of his inheritance originated. Farish's grandfather, William Farish Jr., on March 25th, 1942, pleaded "no contest" to conspiring with Nazi Germany while president of Standard Oil in New Jersey. He was described by Senator Harry Truman in public of approaching "treason" for profiting off the Nazi war machine. Standard Oil, invested millions in IG Farben, who opened a gasoline factory within Auschwitz in 1940. The billions "Stamps" inherited had more blood on it then Bush, so the paper trail of UBC stock would be safe during his 12 years in presidential politics.

It has been 60 years since one of the great money laundering scandals of the 20th century ended and only now are we beginning to see the true historical aspects of this important period of world history, a history that the remaining Holocaust survivors beg humanity to "never forget."

Loftus believes history will view Prescott Bush as harshly as Thyssen. "It is bad enough that the Bush family helped raise the money for Thyssen to give Hitler his start in the 1920s, but giving aid and comfort to the enemy in time of war is treason. The Bush bank helped the Thyssens make the Nazi steel that killed Allied solders. As bad as financing the Nazi war machine may seem, aiding and abetting the Holocaust was worse. Thyssen's coal mines used Jewish slaves as if they were disposable chemicals. There are six million skeletons in the Thyssen family closet, and a myriad of criminal and historical questions to be answered about the Bush family's complicity."

There is no question that the Bush family needs to donate at least $1.5 million to the proper holocaust reparation fund. Since Prescott Bush is dead, the only way to compensate is for the main inheritors of his estate to make amends with surviving slaves and the families of slaves who died in Bush and Thyssen's coal mines. If the Bush family refuses to contribute the money to compensate for Prescott Bush's involvement in the Holocaust, it is like denying the Holocaust itself and their role in one of the darkest moments in world history.

Special thanks to John Loftus, Emmy winning journalist, author and current president of the Florida Holocaust Museum.......

host, i'm dumbfounded. I'm posting this publicly to make a small example. Your post does not begin with any real point, all it does is "call out" various people who identify with some label. You then proceed to tear down the label, as if it mattered. This is not responsible posting. In fact, this is trolling.

We're cleaning up politics and these kinds of posts are pure baited trash. Not to mention the fact that I've already personally (forget about all the other moderators) warned you about posting so many unsubstantiated articles on a subject that you literally bog down a discussion and waste anyone's time who bothers to fucking read your posts. Do you honestly research and post all this stuff thinking more than maybe 2 people will see it all? And believe me, that's an optimistic number.

This is it. Learn to be more concise. Quote only the most relevant and reputable sources. Leave the reading length of your posts at no longer than 5 minutes. 99% of this forum's readers aren't interested in reading your views because of this and the other 1% will never be convinced anyways. I'm not afraid to claim that you're killing viewership to my forum. This ends now.
