For me there's a big difference between a typo and a fundamental misunderstanding of the word. Generally I'll point out errors with homophones, etc, for the purpose of educating the poster, as a side thought to my true response.
On a serious note, it's really very important to convey one's ideas in a coherent fashion. Think of it as going to a job interview and having your shirt buttons misaligned. Is the employer going to be distracted from your merits? You bet. Take thirty seconds to check your post before you submit it. You might even think better of a negative remark!

I find it hard to take someone seriously when there are so many spelling mistakes :\

http://www.iespell.com/ can help you :|

Dilbert1234567 06-11-2003 09:39 AM

I’m not talking about the whole thing misspelled, I’m talking about one small word in the whole lot, I am here for intelligent discussion, not petty bickering

thats all

Darkblack 06-11-2003 11:50 AM

You can convey a message that is intelligent even if you cannot spell. Spelling is a skill. Many people have a hard time spelling while some do not, but that does not make one smarter than the other. If you were speaking directly with someone you would not know if they would spell the words they use to you correctly but you would know what they were saying.

This is a message board for people to talk. It is not a job interview and is not a school paper that needs to be graded. I am sure a lot of you are at work and don't have time to even be posting not alone double checking for spelling errors.

There are many ways to derail a topic and try and make the poster seem unintelligent and therefore wrong. Pointing out spelling errors is one of them.

If you read a lot of my posts you will see that I point out a lot of the ways people try and discredit someone else. This is a personal pet peeve of mine.

Everyone has a right to their opinion and a right to be heard. You may not agree with them and they may even be wrong. Prove them wrong with facts. Trying to make them look stupid just hurts them it does not educate them.

Kadath 06-11-2003 01:49 PM

Well, personally, I don't point out spelling errors to try to discredit a post. While this may be just a message board for people to talk, how you express yourself includes things like proper use of spelling, grammar, and word choice. If a post is rife with errors, it can reach the point of distraction, or mar the poster's ability to convey his or her point.
If you want to address people's tactics with regards to derailment or discrediting, I think it's clear that all are many more significant and effective than petty concerns of spelling. It's something I consider a great deal as well, though I don't think "pet peeve" is the right term. More like a subject of interest. Anyone can point out poor spelling, and anyone can see if such a response is intended to detract from the person's point. It takes some thought to spot the more dastardly plots.

Sun Tzu 06-11-2003 04:02 PM

I try and use word as much as possible and cut/paste my post over. I still find typos when I go back and read some of my thoughts; and feel embarrassed. I understand what a person is saying if they happen to make a mistake, but their contribution to the conversation seems more effective to me if everything is correct. Occasionally, I don’t think I was learned enough in school.

KillerYoda 06-11-2003 04:20 PM

You forgot to capitalize a few words, as well as some punctuation.:D

Liquor Dealer 06-11-2003 04:33 PM

I think that some of you are attempting to take all of the fun out of the TFP. No one came here to get a fuckin' education - they came here to kill some time - shoot the shit - relax - kick back! I think some of you damn perfectionist need to go start your own board where you can nitpick each other to death. No one is purrfect! The only supposed perfect person on earth was executed because of it - Lighten up guys! That is not what this board is here for.

Kadath 06-11-2003 05:40 PM

An example of a way to discredit a poster is to exaggerate their behavior to the point of inanity.

The one big one that I notice on the politics board is something people don't even realize they're doing.

The country's name is Israel, not Isreal. The a comes before the e. That is all.

/me puts away the soapbox.

there's a fine line between pointing to correct ways of spelling and/or grammar and spelling nazis.

kadath and co. seem to be trying to help us by pointing out, not damning us.

I am a horrible speller and typer. I can't tolerate grammar nazis. however, if someone can show me my mistake occasionally and I can learn from it , then good for both of us.

people think and learn differently. some people can't understand math or computers or animals. i can't understand spelling, it is embarressing and has aliented me many times. yet, I do continue to post and try my best and haven't once dealt with a nazi on here.

if they do it to discredit your post then rejoice. they are angry and too ignorant to prove you wrong so they try to hit below the belt and off topic.

Sparhawk 06-13-2003 11:42 AM

Isn't it obvious? The conservatives can't spell, and hate it when the liberals correct them. Or is it vice versa?

/this is the politics thread, isn't it? :p

I agree with Kadath. Sometimes, improper grammar impedes your ability to make your argument plain to the people who are reading it. When a sentence is disjointed, the reader must make judgements as to the writers intent. However, a reader should ask for clarification from the writer out of courtesy, if he or she is unclear as to the intent. Only after receiving clarification should a reader feel free to bite the writer in the ass.

Gentlemen: I am going to make one last attempt at ending this nonsense. I, or no one else that I know, came here to get a fucking education. If you don't like the way someone spells, or uses grammar, then bask in your ability to do it correctly. Bask in that ability quietly, with your hands in your pockets. The people who post on this board come from many nations. To many of them English is a second language. I speak fluent Texan, a foreign language in Massachusetts - I attempt to use the same language in communicating with Hank, who lives in a foreign country called Maine - had to do something with the Missouri Compromise but, like I said - this is not a place to come when needing an education. It doesn't make a rat's ass bit of difference how someone spells something on this board - as long as you can tell what they mean then swallow your urge to compose a soliloquy on what you see as the proper use of the Queen's English. ThanX!

Macheath 06-13-2003 01:21 PM

My spelling is good, but if anyone tells me I've misspelt any of the following words:

ageing, aeroplane, aerofoil, aluminium, arbour, ardour, armour, behaviour, belabour, calibre, centre, cheque, chequer, clamour, colour, defence, dolour, enamour, endeavour, favour, fervour, fibre, flavour, fount, furore, gram, harbour, honour, humour, kerb, labour, licence, liquorice, litre, lustre, manoeuvre, maths, medallist, metre, millilitre, millimetre, misdemeanour, mitre, mould, moulder, moulding, mouldy, moult, neighbour, nitre, odour, offence, paralyse, parlour, pretence, programme, pyjama, rancour, reflexion, rumour, sabre, sceptre, sepulchre, succour, tyre, vapour, vigour, vocalise, whirr.

....I'll kick their ass.;)

WOW settle down LD! Communication is what's important, doesn't having fun come in there somewhere? If some one corrects my spelling- OH WELL. Don't like my grammar- don't write back. People ignore me for my opinion and that doesn't bother me, why the hell should it bother me if they don't like the way I write it.

Churchill could not spell.

I'm sure i'll think of another great who could not spell.

Edit: I seem to remember back at school that the science teachers couldn't spell to save their lives.

You tell 'em, mate! Same goes for toque, taiga, Iqaluit and la Ville de Quebec!!

rogue49 06-23-2003 05:53 AM

I didn't know this was that much of an issue.
I've been here for awhile, and I have yet to find someone correcting my spelling.
And I do know that I do misspell things.
Sometimes if the point is long & important I will use Word,
but mostly I don't.

It's like I've said before, it's not the spelling that counts,
but the idea behind it.

Relax, have fun.
