Bottle Prompts W.Va. Terminal Evacuation

CEREDO, W.Va.

A West Virginia airport terminal was evacuated Thursday after a female passenger's water bottle twice tested positive for explosives, a Transportation Security Administration spokeswoman said.
"The bomb squad is on site and the woman is being interviewed by the FBI," Amy von Walter said.

Security checkpoint screeners got a positive test on a machine that uses swabs to find traces of explosives, von Walter said. A bomb- sniffing dog also reacted to the water bottle.

A screener noticed the bottle in a woman's carryon bag as she prepared to board a flight to Charlotte, N.C., said Tri-State Airport authority President Jim Booton.

Commercial airline service was temporarily suspended, and about 100 passengers and airport employees were ordered to leave the terminal, Booton said.

At least one flight was diverted to Charleston's Yeager Airport, about 60 miles away.

Tri-State Airport in Wayne County has been evacuated. A perimeter has been set up, and evacuees are being asked to stand back 350 feet from the airport.

The Transportation Security Administration reports that a passenger's water bottle screened positive for an explosive material around 9:15 this morning. A second test was confirmed at 11:25. TSA is waiting for further testing to determine the exact substance.

NBC News reports that federal screeners found four containers of liquids inside a woman's carry-on bag during the screening process this morning. Larry Salyers, Tri-State Airport Director, tells WSAZ the woman is of Pakistani origin, lived in Jackson, Michigan and most recently lived in the Huntington area. She is being detained for questioning.

The flight in which the woman was going to board was on its way to Charlotte, North Carolina with a final destination of Detroit, Michigan.

FBI officials are on scene.

At least one flight has been diverted to Yeager Airport in Charleston. Salyers says it is uncertain when the airport will resume operations.

We'll continue to update you on NewsChannel 3 and on WSAZ.com.
So was this an actual attempted attack or just an overblown incident used by bushco to further the administrations agenda and further this war on terrer?

I'm not entirely sure, time will tell.

National fears trigger local trepidation

By Curtis Johnson
The Herald-Dispatch

HUNTINGTON -- The potentially explosive situation at Tri-State Airport Thursday came at a time when many residents are increasingly concerned about threats of terrorism at home and abroad.

Just last week, British authorities busted a would-be Trans-Atlantic terror plot aimed at bringing down multiple commercial flights.

That prompted U.S. authorities to ban passengers from packing any liquids or gels in their carry-on luggage for fear a terrorist would use liquid-based explosives to execute his or her deadly plan.

Then news that a woman of Pakistani descent was stopped at a Huntington airport's security checkpoint Thursday with a potentially explosive material in her carry-on luggage triggered fears in many.

A foreign policy expert says that is a sign of our times.....
More evidence that the wacko conspiracy theories spouted by the left on these threads, should be moved to paranoia.

It is obvious from the above reporting (a local reporter wrote a news report from the "heartland", unembellished by mega-corp liberal media....), that the "fear" of terror in the US is a grassroots phenomena.

Politicians do not lead the people. The successful ones who actually hold elected office......(not the unemployed losers who spend their time whining about losing election after election), either possess an uncanny knack for predicting trends of deepseated public concerns, or employ advisors who do that sort of thing for them, anticipate and react to:

This isn't rocket science, folks. President Bush has his hand on the pulse of the common man. His policies are driven by their concerns...their emotions...
their needs. After 9/11, a man of the President's ability and demeanor.... a man whose supporters often mentioned that he was approachable and the kind of guy who they would be comfortable "having a beer" with....was the right leader, at the precise time when Americans grew fearful; needed to be reassured; and they still clamor for that kind of leadership today.

The proof is in how "edgy", many Americans still are acting. I just don't get the Michael Moore/moveon dot org mindset that wants to fault Mr. Bush for what he does best.....protect us via his stalwart and unbending policies of a GWOT.

The people demanded a response like the color coded red, terror alert at US airports last week, as their reaction in West Virginia demonstrates, a week later. President Bush, in touch with public sentiment, was quick to respond, and wisely....quickly issued the red alert. I'm sure that he knew that he would be attacked by the left and the liberal media, for the red alert and the strict airline passenger screening, but my sig, below, explains it all, quite nicely. 'Nuff said !

Everything i have read has made it seem like the containers did not contain explosives but explosive residue. Which to me means it may have at one time contained explosvies or may have someone picked up a residue from elsewhere.

Let's talk about rush to judgements for a second. You've got a pregnant woman who mistakenly leaves a bottle in her carry-on luggage. It gets caught by a screener and somehow tests positive for explosives with the on-site equipment. She's Muslim wearing a head-scarf so of course we're all under attack. Except that there was no actual explosives found and it was all a mistake.

No arrests. Full cooperation.

And Host, the threat level in the US was NEVER raised to Red at any point. It was and remains Orange at all airports.

You're splitting hairs.....and you're not even a lefty.....a pity....because I'm running out of folks from that ilk, to add to my "ignore" list:

CHERTOFF: Good morning.

......First of all, the United States government has raised the nation's threat level to our highest level of alert, severe, or red, for commercial flights originating in the United Kingdom and bound for the United States. We've made this adjustment to coordinate our alert level with that that is currently enforced in Britain. In Britain, as you've heard, they are now operating at their highest level, which is called critical..........

.......Accordingly, we are raising the threat level -- or we have raised the threat level with respect to aviation in general to high, or orange. That will cover all inbound international flights other than flights from Great Britain, and it will cover all flights within the United States itself.........

Are you sure.

Not criticzing...just questioning. Without taking the actual time to look it up (because I'm too lazy) I could've sworn that I heard, on the local news, that the threat level had been elevated to red. Maybe not...

Oh...that might've been what I heard.

Yes, the threat level was raised to red BUT ONLY FOR FLIGHTS ORIGINATING FROM THE UK. That means that the threat level for all domestic flights (which happen to make up 98.7% of all flights in this country) was Orange. It also means that the threat level for say, the Sears Tower, was not Red. Nor was the Empire State Building. Nor was EVERYTHING ELSE IN THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.

Let's recap. The threat level was raised to Red for 1.3% of the flights into this country. The threat level for literally everything else in this country was not.

Host, left, center, right or indifferent isn't relevant here. It's all about what actually happened, which was the initial reason for my post.

Hopefully I haven't made the banned list, but let me know if I am so "honored".
