Yucca Mountain
Hi, I'm new, does anyone know what Yucca Mountain is. I live in NV and I can't understand why anyone who lives here wants Yucca Mountain here. I need answers and I don't care where you stand politically, so please don't attack me. I am just trying to get as much info about it as possible. Thanks.

Likely, you are here for reasons other than to gain information on Yucca Mtn. and the storage facility slated to be installed within it.....as that could have been accomplished by typing 2 words into Google
Results 1 - 10 of about 5,440,000 for yucca mountain. The first place on the Google list is the DOE....which has a days worth of information for you to digest: " Our mission is to manage and dispose of high-level radioactive waste and spent nuclear fuel in a manner that protects health, safety and the environment; enhances national and energy security; and merits public confidence." http://www.ocrwm.doe.gov/ I will leave it to you to decide which of the other 5 miliion sites to hit up next. If your intent is to discuss the viability of the proposed storage facility.....we can do that

Bombing the Yucca Mountains sounds like a good way to get rid of all our nuclear weapons...

Care to elaborate on why YOU don't want Yucca Mountain to not be in NV?
Note that the US government owns most of Nevada, a majority of which is classified air and ground space. If I recall correctly the US government via Bureau of Land Management owns more than 50% of Nevada. I own property there, along with my grandparents currently live there, and my parents also have a home there. It's a good distance from the major metropolitan. We'd like to think that these things should be in the remotest of remotest locations, but truth be told, someone has to work the facility, audit it from time to time, inspect it, investigate it, report on it. In other words it needs to be monitored closely in my opinion. The only way to do that is to keep it in some proximity of some major city. 100 Miles is a good distance that people wouldn't also just find themselves there by mistake. It's in a remote location yet not inaccessible. As far as I am concerned. It works for me for it to be there. from the DOE website ![]()

I don't want nuclear waste transported in this state, because it puts everyones' lives at risk, especially those that live in NV or surrounding states. All the states that the trucks will be traveling through with nuclear waste are going to be in danger, too. It is a concern of mine because I worry about the health and safety of my children and all Americans. I probably live a lot closer to the site than your family or land, so I can see why you don't care about the Nevadans at risk. By the way, the nearest family lives only 14 miles away from Yucca Mountain, not 100 miles, and that's according to the Department of Energy too.

What would you propose your DOE do with the stuff? I'd worry about dying from a drunk driver more than one of those trucks. At least your gov is dealing with the waste rather than shipping it to another country.

I dunno, that doesn't sound like a bad idea. For ever Illegal Immigrant we get, whatever nation it is gets 150lb's of Nuclear waste.

The stuff has to go someplace. And to get to that someplace its gonna have to be transported. So there's no way around that. I'd rahter have them send it to some mountain where it can be processed into stuff that's less harmful to everyone than just shoved into some barrel and buried someplace to sit for hte next 30 thousand years.
Where would you rather it go? what would you rather they do with it? This seems like a fine idea. i mean.. look at the place: it's a barren mountain in the middle of desert with nothing around. What better place to send this crap to be processed? Why would someone fight against this?

I'd rather it be in a central location rather than several sites across America. Sure the trucks would be putting people at risk as they move through states, no different than any of the biohazard materials that already go through. Again, making it a central location, allows for them to patrol and secure a single area instead of several.

That area is where a lot of nuclear weapons were tested. Actually, I'm going to work a little northeast of that mountain in a few months. I might stop by and take the tour.
I would say that this is a better place to store it than where ever they currently store the stuff. And, once we figure out a safe and consistant way to get into space, we can get all of this waste off the planet and send it into the Sun. |

BTW, my statement regarding 100 miles was about OTHER skilled people who can live in a major metropolitan city and still service the loction. It isn't so remote that any time someone will go to the site it's such a hassle to get there that it's so expensive and costs associated with on site visits becoming cost prohibitive.
I'm not familiar with the "year round housing" that is 14 miles from the mountain, but if it's anything like the small desert communities I have driven through in San Bernadino, Mojave, and the like, I'm going to suggest that they get relocated in some fashion. It's not like there is major infrastructure like sewer, gas, electrical, natural gas. If I recall correctly those small communities are propane based for fuel, electrical and phone lines run, septic tanks for sewage. All of which aren't impossible or cost prohibitive to relocate.

There are many reasons they are choosing Yucca Mountain.
1) Salt. Yes, salt is what they are burying the waste in. This does a couple things, first it prevents water from seeping in and dragging the waste to drinking water. Second it will re-close itself completely as the ages go on with more salt without a collapse which would damage the storage barrels as rocks would do. 2) Desert, quite simply no one lives there and no rain to drag off the waste to groundwater 3) It's an old site for nuclear tests, it's been soaked in radioactivity already in the past. 4) It's government property with very few natural resources. Very few people are there, and there's no incentive to move there anytime soon. |
