This just screams out that TSA/GOV has no common sense

You'll hear a lot of mottos in the military. One key phrase is "hurry up and wait," which definitely applied to the friends and families of 29 Marines returning from Iraq Tuesday.

They spent a couple extra hours waiting at Fort Snelling because one Marine had to spend a couple extra hours at a Los Angeles airport.

"My surprise was when he told me he wasn't making the flight with the rest of his unit," says Terry Brown, mother of Staff Sergeant Dan Brown.

Brown, who has now served two tours of duty in Iraq, couldn't get through LAX security.

"They took him aside and said, you need to come with us, you're on the federal watch list, you're not gonna be able to fly," says First Sgt. Drew Benson, a family readiness officer.

When Brown left the Twin Cities for Iraq last June, airport security found traces of gun powder on his boots from his first tour of duty. Brown was briefly detained then but didn't know he was placed on a watch list.

The unit had no choice but to fly out of L.A. without Brown. But they refused to drive home without him.

"They left here together as a unit, they're coming back to this site as a unit," says Cary Brown, the Marine's father.

Brown's unit waited for him at the Twin Cities airport, so they could all arrive at Fort Snelling together. They were following another motto: Never leave anyone behind.

"I wouldn't expect anything less," Brown says.

He was allowed to catch the next flight home, but he's still baffled he was held back in the first place.

"You're in uniform, you're carrying orders, you're carrying an ID card," Brown says. "Let's use a little common sense here."

He now hopes to clear his name from the list.

"I've been fighting terrorism for the last 16 months in Iraq," he says. "I don't think I should have to come home and deal with this."

Brown's parents say they understand the airport security people needed to do their jobs, too.

The Browns will now work with local politicans to get his name off the list.

TSA Delays Marine Returning To Minnesota

......Daniel Brown was delayed for about 30 minutes while TSA officials in California questioned him. The questioning delayed made Daniel Brown miss his flight, but his fellow Marines didn't think twice about delaying the homecoming celebrations at Fort Snelling...........
TSA's extra, 30 minutes scrutiny of Daniel Brown comes three weeks after the following negative publicity concerning TSA's dismal performance related to undercover federal monitoring of their explosives detection methods. TSA had a file on Daniel Brown, and they used the information about what they found, a year ago, on his old combat boots, to take a closer look at him, for one half hour. TSA did not create the flight itinery/schedule, of Daniel Brown. TSA did react to receiving a failing grade during undercover monitoring or the agency's explosive detection accuracy.

Why is this "30 minute, TSA investigative delay" of one soldier, returning from Iraq, a "story"? Why is Sen. Pat Robertson's failure to follow through on his July, 2004 promise to investigate whether the Bush admin., "fixed the facts" to match the policy to invade Iraq, even after senate democrats walked out of the senate, in protest, last november, not "the story", reported in the news, each and every effing day that Pat Robertson fails to finish the investigation and issue a report?

Report: Airport screeners fail homemade bomb tests

Friday, March 17, 2006; Posted: 9:21 a.m. EST (14:21 GMT)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) -- Security screeners at 21 U.S. airports failed to find bomb-making materials during recent government tests, NBC Nightly News reported on Thursday.

Federal agents carrying materials that could be used to make bombs escaped detection in airport screening during tests conducted between October and January, NBC said, citing government sources.

"In all 21 airports tested, no machine, no swab, no screener anywhere stopped the bomb materials from getting through. Even when investigators deliberately triggered extra screening of bags, no one stopped these materials," the report said.

NBC said, for security reasons, it would not name the airports nor the ingredients involved in the tests conducted by the Government Accountability Office (GAO), the watchdog arm of Congress.

Congress requested the investigation to determine the vulnerability of U.S. airlines to a suicide bomber using cheap and easy-to-obtain materials, NBC said.

The GAO finding is classified, the report said.

The Transportation Security Administration had no comment on the report but said in a statement that detecting explosive materials and IEDs (improvised explosive devices) at the checkpoint was the agency's top priority.

"TSA has already initiated enhanced detection technology training for security officers to identify possible explosive materials and IED components," the statement said.
