Academic Report on U.S. "Israel Lobby" & Is Israel a U.S. Ally?

Yes, It's Anti-Semitic

By Eliot A. Cohen
Wednesday, April 5, 2006; Page A23

Academic papers posted on a Harvard Web site don't normally attract enthusiastic praise from prominent white supremacists. But John Mearsheimer and Stephen Walt's <a href="http://www.lrb.co.uk/v28/n06/mear01_.html">"The Israel Lobby and U.S. Foreign Policy"</a> has won David Duke's endorsement as "a modern Declaration of American Independence" and a vindication of the ex-Klansman's earlier work, presumably including his pathbreaking book, "Jewish Supremacism."

Walt and Mearsheimer contend that American national security dictates distancing ourselves from the state of Israel; that U.S. support for Israel has led to such disasters as America's status as the No. 1 target for Islamic terrorists; and that such an otherwise inexplicable departure from good sense can be accounted for only by the power of "The Lobby" (their capitalization), an overwhelmingly Jewish force abetted by some Christian evangelicals and a gentile neocon collaborator or two, who have hijacked American foreign policy and controlled it for decades.....

Noam Chomsky and the Pro-Israel Lobby: Fourteen Erroneous Theses
By <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Petras">James Petras</a>
Apr 3, 2006, 03:58

......While in general Chomsky has deliberately refrained from specifically discussing the pro-Israel lobby in his speeches, interviews and publications analyzing US policy toward the Middle East, but when he does, he follows the above-mentioned repertory.

The problem of war and peace in the Middle East and the role of the Israel lobby is too serious to be marginalized as an after-thought. Even more important the increasing censoring of free speech and erosion of our civil liberties, academic freedom by an aggressive lobby, with powerful legislative and White House backers is a threat to our already limited democracy.

It is incumbent therefore to examine the fourteen erroneous theses of the highly respected Professor Chomsky in order to move ahead and confront the Lobby’s threats to peace abroad and civil liberties at home.

Fourteen Theses......

Fifteen People Arrested in March in Dallas, Suspected of Casing Federal Buildings

All 15 "students" have now been deported

10/02/2001

By Anna Werner / 11 News

11 news reported how people claiming to be "Israeli art students" might be trying to sneak into federal buildings and defense sites, and even doing surveillance.

And at least one expert said he thought it could all be preparation for an attack. Well, now federal sources say they are not ruling out that all of this could be connected with the hijackings on September 11, because of events in another Texas city.

In Dallas, the so-called students hit early this year at the city's FBI building, the Drug Enforcement Administration and at the Earle Cabell Federal building, where guards found one student wandering the halls with a floor plan of the building.

So the Dallas INS went on the alert, finding and arresting 15 people in March. Thirteen claimed to be Israelis and two are professed Colombians.

But according to sources, once again their passports were phony. And another federal source says some of those arrested also appeared to have lists of federal employees and their home addresses.

All 15 "students" have now been deported.......

Israeli Companies Suspected of Spying ( )
JERUSALEM, Jun 02, 2005 (AP Online via COMTEX) -- It started out as a family feud. But a small-time computer break-in has erupted into Israel's biggest business scandal in decades, reaching into some of the country's powerful corporate suites and jolting the cozy world of the industrial elite.

Top Israeli blue chip companies, including a high-tech giant that trades in New York, are suspected of using illicit surveillance software to steal information from their rivals and enemies.

The list of victims is equally impressive, ranging from a cigarette importer to the local operations of the Ace hardware chain and Hewlett-Packard Co.....
Fox News had this Dec. 17, 2001 investigative reporting on it's site, and it's alledgedly been "scrubbed", at the behest of influential, Israeli interests:

The spies who came in from the art sale
Some reporters have said what U.S. and Israeli officials don't want to hear

........In 1999, word began spreading among intelligence agencies about bands of Israeli "students" doing veeeerrrrry strange things, such as popping up around federal buildings and military establishments marketing artwork.

According to intelligence sources, low-level alerts began being flashed around to offices of the FBI, DEA, federal prosecutors and others. By March 2001, counterintelligence officials had issued a bulletin to be on the watch for Israelis masquerading as "art students."

At the same time, American intelligence services were increasingly worried by the dominance of many highly sensitive areas of telecommunications by Israeli companies. Comverse Infosys (now called Verint) provides U.S. lawmen with computer equipment for wiretapping. Speculation is that "catch gates" in the system allowed listeners to be listened to. Other software called Amdocs provided extensive records of virtually all calls placed by the 25 largest U.S. telephone companies.

Often the Israeli "students" sold their artwork on street locations near federal buildings. In one incident in Atlanta, they showed up outside an unlisted FBI office and began taking photos, according to sources. Agents collared them and sent them on their way.

Also in our town, a DEA agent recalled seeing the "students" selling art around his offices. Later, when he spied the same artwork (Chinese made, as it turned out) at the Mall of Georgia, he became suspicious. The DEA is the lead U.S. agency in monitoring money laundering -- which would explain a spy's interest.

Similarly, a former federal prosecutor was visited at his home by the Israeli "art salesmen" -- and, according to sources, concluded that, wow, this was exactly what the alerts had been about.

Then came Sept. 11. While America was mesmerized by the "War on Terrorism," the media went out to a four-martini lunch when it came to skeptical reporting.

With a few commendable exceptions. One of those is Carl Cameron, a gutsy reporter for Fox News. On Dec. 12, Cameron broke the blockbuster spy story. He said at the time: "Since Sept. 11, more than 60 Israelis have been arrested or detained, either under the new PATRIOT anti-terrorism law, or for immigration violations. A handful of active Israeli military were among those detained, according to investigators, who say some of the detainees also failed polygraph questions when asked about alleged surveillance activities against and in the United States."

That was enough of a gut-kick. Then Cameron threw this incendiary bomb: "There is no indication that the Israelis were involved in the 9-11 attacks, but investigators suspect that the Israelis may have gathered intelligence about the attacks in advance, and not shared it."

Fox also reported the Israeli "students" "targeted and penetrated" U.S. military bases. ...........

Carl Cameron Investigates

BRIT HUME, HOST:

.......Now Fox News has learned some U.S. investigators believe that there are Israelis again very much engaged in spying in and on the U.S., who may have known things they didn't tell us before Sept. 11. Fox News correspondent Carl Cameron has details in the first of a four-part series..........
<a href="http://www.whatreallyhappened.com/Israeli-Spying-Part-2.htm">Part 2 of 4</a>

<a href="http://www.whatreallyhappened.com/Israeli-Spying-Part-3.htm">Part 3 of 4</a>

BRIT HUME, HOST: Last time we reported on an Israeli-based company called Amdocs Ltd. that generates the computerized records and billing data for nearly every phone call made in America. As Carl Cameron reported, U.S. investigators digging into the 9/11 terrorist attacks fear that suspects may have been tipped off to what they were doing by information leaking out of Amdocs.

In tonight's report, we learn that the concern about phone security extends to another company, founded in Israel, that provides the technology that the U.S. government uses for electronic eavesdropping. Here is Carl Cameron's third report.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

CARL CAMERON, FOX NEWS CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): The company is Comverse Infosys, a subsidiary of an Israeli-run private telecommunications firm, with offices throughout the U.S. It provides wiretapping equipment for law enforcement. Here's how wiretapping works in the U.S.

Every time you make a call, it passes through the nation's elaborate network of switchers and routers run by the phone companies. Custom computers and software, made by companies like Comverse, are tied into that network to intercept, record and store the wiretapped calls, and at the same time transmit them to investigators.

The manufacturers have continuing access to the computers so they can service them and keep them free of glitches.......

Carl Cameron Investigates

Monday, December 17, 2001

.....COLIN POWELL, SECRETARY OF STATE: I'm aware that some Israeli citizens have been detained. With respect to why they're being detained and the other aspects of your question – whether it's because they're in intelligence services, or what they were doing – I will defer to the Department of Justice and the FBI to answer that.

(END VIDEOTAPE)

CAMERON: Beyond the 60 apprehended or detained, and many deported since Sept. 11, another group of 140 Israeli individuals have been arrested and detained in this year in what government documents describe as "an organized intelligence gathering operation," designed to "penetrate government facilities." Most of those individuals said they had served in the Israeli military, which is compulsory there.

But they also had, most of them, intelligence expertise, and either worked for Amdocs or other companies in Israel that specialize in wiretapping. Earlier this week, the Israeli embassy in Washington denied any spying against or in the United States – Tony.

SNOW: Carl, we've heard the comments from Ari Fleischer and Colin Powell. What are officials saying behind the scenes?

CAMERON: Well, there's real pandemonium described at the FBI, the DEA and the INS. A lot of these problems have been well known to some investigators, many of who have contributed to the reporting on this story. And what they say is happening is supervisors and management are now going back and collecting much of the information, because there's tremendous pressure from the top levels of all of those agencies to find out exactly what's going on.........
After "scrubbing" the 4 part, Dec. 17, 2001 investigative report, excerpted above, Fox News, curiously, retains this reference to the original report:

Readers Divided Over Israeli Spies
Friday, March 08, 2002
By Garett R. Nadrich

News that a group of Israelis detained by the United States may have had prior knowledge of the Sept. 11 attacks and not shared it with the U.S., "Suspected Israeli Spies Held by U.S.," provoked a rapid but divided response from readers.

Readers expressed many views on the different sides of the issue. While some said Israel should not be spying on the U.S. because of they are an ally, others feel that Israel's intentions were compatible with U.S interests — to seek out Arab terrorists........
I observe folks on these threads, who have "made up their minds", as to the question of whether Zacharias Moussaoui, should be "eligible" for the death penalty, posting their opinions.

My opinion is that the extent of Moussaoui's "complicity" in the 9/11 attacks conspiracy, is still an "open" question. I don't believe that it is possible to arrive at an opinion in a life or death matter, given that our own government has not provided enough accurate public information as to what happened on 9/11, and certainly not enough to determine who was responsible for the attacks or for withholding information that would have thwarted the attacks.

We are left to observe the "spectacle" of Moussaoui, and the influence of the lobbying on behalf of Israel. Is the influence that Israel holds over U.S. politicians, a "good thing" for the U.S.? Is it "anti semitic" to publish reports like the "Harvard Study", linked above, or the Dec., 2001 Fox News report...or even this OP? I endeavor to initiate discussion of major issues. I do not believe that it is anti semetic to criticize the motives or the actions of Israel.
I've recently spent four years in a romantic relationship with an American Jew. Anti-semitism is bigotry and prejudice against Jews, and it is wrong.
I would create an OP similar to this one, in response to any foreign nation acting as I perceive Israel and it's backers to be acting, here in the U.S.

I no longer can regard Israel as a "friendly" nation, but I am not yet ready to label Israel as an "enemy" of the U.S.....how about you?

Anti-semitism has become such a joke. I don't understand how these talking heads use it as an end all when debating anything Israel. It's almost as bad as saying "but Clinton..." or playing the race card.

Personally, I think the whole Moussaoui trial is rediculous. If terrorists like this guy and Saddam are so bad, why can't we do everything the right way by letting everything come out and court and make these guys hang for what they did? It's almost as if the US government has to tread very carefully so that none of their complicity is exposed in the trials. Moussaoui just seems like the convinient guy to take some heat off western and israeli intelligence agencies.

As for Israel we need to cut ties with them. How we continue to ally with a nation that repeatadely spies on us is beyond me. I'm not sure if it's true or not, but I've heard that Michael Chertoff is also an Israeli citizen. I guess it's anti-semitism if a person doesn't think an Israeli should be running Homeland security either.

how about we try this without such a front loaded heavy beginning. State your case as simply as possible and do not inundate the OP.
