I have a "wild" pet also. Never posted his picture from fear of being branded as "tilted". But if you have the fortitude to love a snake, I'll confess to having a pet snail!! He loves cat food and gets his own saucer every night.

Snakes give me the freakin' heeby-jeebies. Yes, I said heeby-jeebies. In medical terms that means an intensely frightful feeling. I don't dig snakes that much. It would scare the crap out of me if I saw that in my house. I don't even like the thought.

That snake is gorgeous...it wouldnt be poisonous, there are only a few in these parts that are, the Rattlesnake, Coral Snake, and Cottonmouth.

Thats a Black Racer...completely non-venomous

Eastern Indigo snakes are not normal to South Carolina, usually only parts of Southern Ga, Florida, Alabama and Mississippi. They dont have white on them...they are glossy blue/black (Nikki's is more matte than glossy) and their chins are reddish brown, rust colored, orange, tan or red, not white.

I feel like Im doing a school report on snakes hehehehe

What a handsome snake... while we have a couple of species in the area the only one I see with any frequency is the Garter Snake (yellow and black stripes)...

Yours just looks so cool... makes me want to reach out and stroke him.

Shani is right about it being a black racer (or common garden snake) it is completely harmless. I really liked the fact that he/she decided to curl up there. I really did not zoom in a whole lot to take that shot. I was sitting in front of the snake, maybe a foot away. I am not at all afraid of reptiles and I found he/she to be more beautiful then anything else.

Cellophane... I can't think of the last time I saw a snake in the city.

The only ones I see now are at the cottage... and by frequency, I meant rarely. Though when I was a kid, I do remember coming across a mess of garter snakes (there is a name for this that escapes me now) all twisted up together. THAT was very creepy.

I don't think I would be able to sleep if I saw that outside my front door. What if it gets in? Yikes! Plus, I wouldn't be able to post the picture because I would have broken the camera when I passed out from fear or ran like a crazy woman and bumped into a tree or something.

I found a black racer crossing the bike trail a week or so ago. I hissed at it really loudly and it decided to reverse course. Fast. Very fast. That's good 'cause otherwise I'd've run over it with my bike, and I didn't want to do that.

i don't know ANYTHING about snakes.

My mom ran over a snake when they were riding on a mountain trail. She is terrified of snakes, but didn't see it until she felt the bump. She was pretty rattled. I would have loved to been there to see her reaction, but not the snake.

Wish I could see a better close-up of that snake. He's probably harmless, but his pattern reminds me vaguely of a moccassin - and he is by water, which is where you'd find one. There are some common water snakes with similar patterns that are harmless though. Again, looking closely at his head, I don't think he is, but it's been a long time since I've seen one.

Where is this? What state? Also, I can't see the shape of his head very well.

I noticed when reading above, nobody mentioned the tell-tale signs of venomous snakes - at least those here in North America. I guess you folks weren't Boy Scouts .

Venomous - triangular shaped head, often larger than width of neck, eyes more slanted, bites you and it hurts like fuck and you need to get to the hospital before you die

Non-Venomous - more of a rounded head, closer in width to the neck, eyes are rounded, bites you and it just hurts

Snakes, that's okay. If this was a spider thread however.... I'd have closed the fucker before I saw any more pictures. Damnit I hate spiders.

Oh, and that slug... priceless. I laughed so hard!

I actually like snakes...well, except the ones that want to kill me. Those kinds of snakes I don't like.

I don't know how I would have reacted had I walked out on my front porch and saw one sitting under a table. Well, not sitting since they don't have legs, but you know what I mean. I'd probably let out a small gasp and quietly go back inside and stay there for the rest of my life.

The word is hibernaculum... whew. I had to ask my 10-year-old son to remind me but he came through in a clinch. And while a hibernaculum describes pretty much any chamber or covering used for hibernation, the garter snakes up here where it gets really cold in winter gather together in numbers close to 100 for the winter. Interestingly they always winter in the same hibernaculum every year (travelling up to 3 or 4 km to get there).

Can you tell this was eating me alive that I couldn't remember?

I return you to your regularly scheduled thread...

I admire snakes...but like someone else said, I don't like surprises, and that would certainly have scared the living daylights outta me. Of course the first thing I thought ofwas: Black Mambo! Duh. But we don't have black snakes in my neck of the woods (So. Cal.), so...you know.

We do however have the Mojave Green, which is chiefly known for the distinction of it's poison being both a hemotoxin *and* a neurotoxin. Most snakebite deaths in CA are due to Mojave Greens.
