phredgreen's richmond
I wandered around town and took some images of richmond today, on request of a friend. they aren't terribly good, as they were taken with a little 1.3 megapixel cam that come in a blister-pack, but it gets the point across.
this is the third street diner. it's one of the few places in richmond that is open 24 hours. the prices are fair and the food is edible, so if there's nothing else, we can always go here for food. this is the video fan, a really neat vide rental store located in the fan district (so named because the streets radiate out in a fan-type formation). they carry alot of smaller releases and a bunch of foreign films, and the prices are incredibly fair. right next to it is a place called 8 1/2. it's a little italian grocery store that also makes pizza and a few other dishes to go. they have a spectacular italian sandwich. this is one of the older theatres in richmond, called "the mosque" by all of the locals becuase of its architecture. you can see some of what they are talking about along the top of the building... it continues like that all the way around. this is the jefferson hotel. it's one of those hoity-toity hotels that rich old people go to to feel special. it also plays hosts to a number of local events, some of which i've had the (dis)pleasure of setting up and working. the management takes themselves a little too importantly. just a silly picture i saw in the window if a vet's clinic as i was walking down the street. along monument avenue are a number of statues... this one is the largest, a statue of general robert e. lee. this is a strecth of cary street going through shockoe bottom. the streets are still cobblestones and most of the buildings are historic. this was the area that got hit really hard when we had the floods from tropical storm gaston here's an image of richmond from the south, coming across the river on 7th street here's an image of the city taken from east of downtown turning from byrd street to 7th street, i just thought this image came together well. some random buildings the past-time of alot of the poorer folks is hanging around broad street on the sidewalks doing whatever it is they do when they aren't doing whatever else they do. one of the main places you'll see them standing around is down this stretch of broad street, starting with some store called pants plus. the sign caught me the first time i drove down broad street... what a name. an example of some of the nicer houses you'll find in richmond. these are on monument avenue some more houses on monument avenue yet another... where i park my car on a regular basis. this is a small lot behind the kroeger grocery store with a loading dock and some other back entrances, and lots of open parking. monument avenue is a separated street that travels along a good part of richmond and is an amazing alternative to broad street, the main drag. as you drive along, you will see statues of famous civil war generals, some old decommissioned cannons from the war era, and a statue of arthur ashe threating to beat down some unruly children with a book (i shit you not). this is main street station. they made a really big deal about its opening, but in all reality, it's little more than a minor train stop. the main amtrak station is a dingy little nothing a few miles north and west of here. a nifty little area that's pretty secluded from the rest of richmond, libby and grove has a bunch of really nice little shops and a two-screen theatre that plays small-run movies. looking up from shockoe bottom, where the worst flooding hit, looking up at the i-95 and the train tracks as they go overhead. a little farmer's market and what would be considered part of ricmond's entertainment district, shockoe bottom. what's considered to be the oldest standing building in richmond has been converted to the edgar allen poe museum. a really beautiful building, i didn't get much except that it's a court building of some kind the civil war museum, built on the grounds of what was once a confederate prison during the war. this lies right at the riverfront some of the governmental buildings downtown an older church that lies less than a block from home the carytown district, a few blocks of shops and resturaunts that run along cary street west of boulevard. broad street literally runs the length of richmond. this is looking down it from church hill, a historic area east of city center. one of the victims of the flooding during tropical storm gaston. what was rumoured to be the best pizza in richmond (i never got to try them) was pretty well washed away on the bottom level as the lowest-lying areas of the city flooded with up to 10 feet of water my apartment buildings. it's a row of four identical buildings that host four apartments each. the building on the end closest to the camera has yet to be renovated, but all three others were completely gutted and the build back up again with new wiring, pipes, and flooring. we did pretty well finding these.

Nice job phred. Used to go to Richmond year after year for the NASCAR race. Your pics brought back nice memories. Beautiful city with it seems much going on. If you get a chance, you should wander around Hollywood cemetary and read some of the stones. Great Civil War history and extremely well kept up.
Thanks again man, really enjoyed these. |

Thanks for the tour. It's always nice to see what people will photograph when they need to describe their city to someone. I tried this a few years back and also came up with a big batch of stuff! Thanks for posting!
