I love this thread! I just went through 8 pages of your world while I'm sitting here in Etobicoke watching a sqlplus script load data into an Oracle database.
I'd love to do a TFP get together. The problem is I live near Kingston and only come to Toronto from monday to thursday. We need to meet for Guinness on a wednesday evening sometime. |

A visit by Joe
This past weekend I was graced by the illustrious Paddyjoe and Mrs. Joe.
They were in town for a Memorial Day weekend, catching a few baseball games at the Dome. I met up with them for dinner on Sunday night and spent the afternoon on Monday showing them the distillery district, my neighbourhood, the Riverdale Farm and the Necroplis... Lots of pictures were taken, here are a few. I am hoping that Paddyjoe will post some of his when he gets his film developed. We met at the fountain on Front Street. It is right next to the place where we had our group shot for the last Toronto TFP meetup. Speaking of which, we went for dinner at Hernando's... this time I ate as well as drank... Mrs. Joe snapped this one (only the second shot in this thread not taken by me). This is a coffee roaster located at Balzac's Coffee in the Distillery District. Coffee roaster detail: This is a cool sculpture down one of the back alleys... the more you look at the more you can see figures. There were a couple of old and rusting trucks in a back alley: An old bridge in the valley a detail on that bridge The Toronto Necropolis (City of the Dead) is full of facinating hisory This is the Don River... it really is a cesspool but here it almost looks serene. Look! It's Paddyjoe!

Trip to Prince Edward County
A week or so ago the kids and I spent the weekend at my Father-in-Law's new cottage in Prince Edward County. I have found a new place to love...
The house is near a place called Roblin's Mill. The remains of the mill are still there. I didn't get pictures of them this time but I did get some shots of the water course that used to power the mill. The falls just seemed to go on and on... Some attractive Fungi Oh look! The drugs have kicked in. Zero is a manic dog. The kids and I went to the Toronto Islands twice this week. The first visit was last Sunday when we went with three other families. I got G an all-day pass and he managed to have a great time but poor Z barely scratched the surface of her tickets because there were so many other kids pulling her in other directions. I felt bad so I offered to take her later this week... I ended up taking Z and G today. We spent the whole day there. We did some rides in the morning and then spent the rest of the day wandering the eastern islands, discovered a beach we didn't know, wandered the community and walked the quay... It was a great day. Sadly, most of the pictures have the kids in them so, these will seem a little absent of life. The Swans up close The skyline from the Ferry One of the other ferries And we did... The antique carousel on at Centreville is very cool... The Ferris Wheel from inside... by the way, when did I start getting sick on a Ferris Wheel... damn I am getting old. He does... The bridge that took us to a beach we'd never been to before... Over the bridge and in a place that didn't look much used, was sitting this fully functional and quite attractive water fountain. It just struck me as lonely and missing the crowds of days gone by... The Algonquin Bridge to Algonquin Island... Queen City Yacht Club as seen from the Algonquin Bridge Some houses on Algonquin Island... this community is so cool. The quay on the Eastern Gap... right across the gap is the dock where the Rochester Ferry used to dock. I don't know if they even use this quay anymore, let alone when they used it... The ferry coming to take us home.

Hey Janey... thanks for checking in!
Sadly, my phone died just before my big move (walked into the lake with it in my pocket... I know, I am an idiot). I just received my new phone for work and it is a... wait for it... blackberry. with no camera. I am going to have to wait for my replacement treo to get here... or I am going to have to buy a new camera phone. Tomorrow is Saturday. Maybe I should go shopping... It really is driving me crazy... I keep seeing thing that I want to snap with a camera and don't have the ability to do it...

Nature Reserve and Chinese Garden
This is one of the Salvador Dali statues that are all over town for the next couple of months. I think this one is the only one that will be staying.
The street corner nearest my flat... I went for a walk in the Nature Reserve. It is one of only two natural rainforests in an urban setting in the world (the other is in Brazil). We saw monkies a plenty and the odd monitor lizard (sorry no pics of the lizard). Part of the walk took us to the Tree Top Walk, a suspension bridge slung between two of the highest peaks in the area. Stand of Bamboo Monkey on the bridge View from the Bridge The Bridge Today was a trip to the Chinese Gardens out in the west end of the city. Despite what the travel books said, I quite enjoyed it. It is currently full of a little fair and a lot of "lantern sculptures". The Chinese are in the middle of the Lantern Festival which, if I understand correctly, is part of the mid-fall Festival of the Hungry Ghost. http://static.flickr.com/85/245319519_3965241b01.jpg

I have been wanting to take a picture of one of these for a while. I think it's an ingenious way to carry coffee.
This is a type of kueh called Lapis Sagu. Kueh's are the Malasian or Peranekan version sweets. They are usually made with tapioca or rice flour and coconut... there are tons of different types of kueh. I was going to show you a picture of my favourite one, but I ate it before I remembered to take the shot. I visited the Bukit Batok Town Park today. It features a small Lake and rocky area called Little Guilin (named after the city of Guilin in China that has similar landscape only larger). This father and son team were fishing. Like many big things, a picture doesn't do it justice. It really was quite beautiful. I decided to walk through the park and it turned out to be little more than a dirt path that climbed up the hill and came down into a residential neighbourhood on the other side. Halfway up the hill, just off the path, I came across this shrine. Finally, the view from the top. I am thinking about renting a place in the condo in the middle (it's why I came to the area in the first place). While the view is nice, I think it might be too far out of town for my taste.

OMG Char, these are fantastic pictures. I can't believe you're living in such exotic splendor--even more exotic than Canada, which is hard to believe. I love the pictures of the pavement (already reposted by flyman), and the colorful floating lotuses (loti?) on the lake.
They thrill and inspire, your pictures.

Cannes and the Riviera
I was back in the France again last week, this time I managed to smuggle my wife along for the trip...
Just after taking this picture I was hospitalized by a roundhouse kick to the head. The next couple of shots are of some guys fishing on the quay... There is only one reason I can think of to stay inside when it's this beautiful outside... hence the delay in getting outside. Life doesn't get too much better than this... This is the Chateau where we stayed for the week... I am sure it was once a lovely massive house, now it is a number of smaller, and charming apartments... The town square in Cannes... can you spot the MacDonald's? A water fountain with Potable Water in Saint Paul de Vence This statue is just outside the main gate of the walled city of Saint Paul de Vence. If you look closely you will see a cat sleeping between the statue's front paws. He was completely out of it. We came back about three hours later and he was still there... only he was cleaning himself. This cat completely ignored me as I took his picture... He must be completely immured to tourists. I stayed in the Hotel des Ramparts a few years ago... it was cheap and very cool. I recommend it if you are looking for something rustic. A keystone. A very rough translation: "This building was constructed by R. Nardusano - 1612" Outside the Cathedral in Saint Paul de Vence The streets of Saint Paul are paved with small stones like this... it reminded me of the paths in the Bonsai Garden in Singapore (see above) The town well in Saint Paul de Vence My wife strolling the streets of Saint Paul de Vence This was on the beach in Nice as I killed time before I left. I just liked the way this woman was by herself, surrounded by rusty things... Not far from the lady above was a couple of guys playing boule...

It's been a while since I posted here...
This is the view from my bedroom window. This is the view from my balcony A mother's love... this is in Toa Payoh, a housing Estate. Sunset from my window Some old warehouses on Robertson Quay, not long ago they were both derelict. I would love to be able to buy the rundown one and make it over into a restaurant... anyone have a few million to spare? These things have been here for so long the trees are part of the buildings... A wider shot of the warehouse The Singapore Flyer, under construction... it will be like the London eye when it's done. A statue on Boat Quay and another I have more but flickr just went offline. Flickr is back up! Here are a few more... This is a series of one of the statues that line the Singapore River. This one is just across from Boat Quay. The colonist says, "Read between the lines!" This the bridge at Robertson's Quay.

Thanks for sharing again. I wish Toronto had such a commitment to public art.
There was a brief article in the Globe and Mail travel section this weekend about the gentrifying Quays of Singapore: http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servl...uery=singapore That restaurant might be a good investment. I'd front you $20CDN, but I want free appetizers for life.

That was a cool article.
It's quite true that Singapore has ignored their riverfront for some time. I remember my first visit here in 1997, Clarke Quay was pretty derelict. Boat Quay has been around for years but it's starting to show its age. I suspect it will get a makeover before long. I can only hope that Toronto's recent forward momentum leads to something beautiful and, more importantly, something that people use. $20!!! I am only a few million off my goal. Keep up the good work! It is still Chinese New Year... the celebrations go on for fifteen days. Today was the Chingay Parade down Orchard Road. Here is a shot I took of the floats marshaling for the dress rehearsal last night. Some red leafy things I saw while out for a walk today. One of the many pedestrian bridges in Sinapore. The clouds rolled in and there was a few hours of rain today. I took this down by the river the other day.
