My cousin came into town for the holidaze, so we ran down to the beach, tonite. A so-so sunset, but I'll take what we get. It was almost 80, today... 2 days before Christmas.. Love it. :)

Hey, I'm not that "good", really. I'm just lucky enough to live in an area that it is hard to screw up a sunrise / sunset photo. Nearly every one I see is perfect, except for tonite's, of course. Not a cloud in the sky and if I've seen one flaming ball of orange going into the Gulf of Mexico, I've seen ten thousand of 'em. ;)

BTW, liked your second photo, tilted horizon and all.

hey tropicdiver i recently took some sunset pics that reminded me of yours halfway up the page (i guess cuz of the cloud formation near the top)

Be careful while on your roof. We wouldn't want you falling off and hurting your camera. ;)

Of course, I had brought along my tripod, but left the camera / tripod connector at home, and with the low light, it was difficult to hand hold the camera perfectly still at 1/15th of a second. This was one of the earlier photos. Everything was a strange purple.

Thanks, very much, MB.

To answer your question, it depends. If you look at this photo, the only thing I've done is cropped it and added a sig. Now, if you look at where the sun has set and imagine me zooming in from the camera's maximum wide angle of 35mm to it's maximum telephoto of 280mm, you'll see nothing but the brilliant red's of the area where the sun has just set. Depending on how dark the photo is, I have lightned them at time to show a bit more detail and if I'm not using a tripod and the photo doesn't come out as sharp as I have wished, I may use some unsharp masking on it. Rarely do I saturate the colors, because they really don't need it. Some people think the best sunsets in the world are in Key West (from a sunset party atmosphere, they may be right), but those same folks that say that have never witnessed a sunset from 130 miles due north in the Fort Myers / Sanibel area. :)

apeman 02-11-2004 08:42 AM

I didn't get any nice sunsets in New Zealand .. I think there's not enough dust in the air or something..

The last few shots are very very very good!

I know Seattle isn't exactly the pinnacle (or in this case, trough) of cold weather, but I still get a kick out of people who are freezing their a$$es off when the weather gets down to the 60s and 50s. In Seattle, when temps hit the 60s for the first time of the year most people come out in shorts!!!

Beautiful pics though TD. I'm glad you braved the elements to get them. ;)

tropicdiver 02-11-2004 02:54 PM

Well, as you know, NSUE, it is tough duty, but someone has to do it and I've bellied up to the bar and am going to handle the task. Today was much better at 79F and tomorrow, it is supposed to be 81F. :)

And thanks, too. :)

I had to drive from Ft. Myers to Bonita Springs (about 30 minutes south in our 'rush hour') this morning. The fog was not really thick, but it was there. I had to crop out the tops of some cars, when I stopped at the stop lites, but I couldn't pass up cranking down the window and taking a shot or two on the way.

Hey, I like your photos. Not a thing wrong with them. Been a bit of a dry spell here, as it is our dry season, so we often have nothing but blue skies and one can only get so excited about a ball of fire setting into the water, nite after nite. The clouds are what make a sunset / sunrise spectacular, IMHO. We still have a couple more long months before the rainy season starts in and the photo opportunities really start to fire up, again, so please, keep sharing with us others that are sunset / sunrise deprived. ;)
