CHALLENGE: Guess the Trite Saying

The object of this challenge is to:

1.) Create a photograph that suggests or implies a trite saying. For example:

Opposites attract
Like a tornado hit it
Faster than a NY minute
All your eggs in one basket
Broad as it is long

(Sorry, rules of the forum are no 3rd party photos)

2.) Post your photo in the thread, but do not reveal your trite saying.

3.) Let others post their guesses in the thread, as to what you have in mind by looking at your photo.

Here is a reference for trite sayings.

And another.

If I find others or better ones, I will put those in, or you can post them, too.

Ok, I will start us off:

(Hopefully this challenge hasn't been done before here...I searched the photography forum before creating this one.)

Manic_Skafe 09-16-2009 05:44 AM

Like talking to a brick wall?
Like talking to a brick wall about the price of cement?

I'll play along as soon as I get the chance to go shoot something.

thirdsun 09-16-2009 05:56 AM

Manic_Skafe, you'll have to decipher my trite response to your guess from this image:

:D

Redlemon 09-16-2009 06:09 AM

That would be "close, but no cigar". But I can't figure out the brick wall cliche yet.

thirdsun 09-16-2009 06:21 AM

Here is my trite response to redlemon's guess on the cigarette photo:

Poppinjay 09-16-2009 06:24 AM

Bingo.

Bang your head against a brick wall?

thirdsun 09-16-2009 06:43 AM

poppinjay got it right

Leto 09-16-2009 06:46 AM

how about another brick in the wall?

thirdsun 09-16-2009 07:16 AM

Ok, all of those were excellent guesses on the brick wall. Thanks for joining in!

Feel free to illustrate / use the trite phrases that weren't the right answer.

Oops...can't use third party photography here. My bad....

I considered that, but saw no head with which to bang. I'll take that increase in scope under consideration as the thread continues. Fun thread.

thirdsun 09-16-2009 11:11 AM

Thanks, redlemon!

Ok, I found a comprehensive source for trite sayings and cliches, etc. here.

HERE IS A NEW ONE

Now...think really hard about this one. If it's obvious, it might not be the right one....

Jetée 09-16-2009 11:22 AM

I'll say, the hints at more photos within posts and replaced responses have me rightly confused at this point: thirdsun, has anyone correctly guessed your "old addage" yet, and if so, are they free to pick up from whence you left?

thirdsun 09-16-2009 11:28 AM

So sorry, Jetee...I had some 3rd party photos in there that had to be removed.

Poppinjay correctly guessed the brick wall: Bang your head against a brick wall.

The newest one is now in post #11

Yes, Jetee, feel free to add MORE.

Redlemon 09-16-2009 11:32 AM

Clarification: is that crabgrass, or coniferous needles?
Dried leaves?
Base of sand or stone?

Jetée 09-16-2009 11:32 AM

Okay, thanks for clearing it up.

my guess shall be: "head over heels"

I'm not very good at this, I'm afraid. I haven't clicked any of your resource banks yet, thirdsun, 'cause I wanted to see if I am "hip" with phrases. I don't think I am.

thirdsun 09-16-2009 01:05 PM

Redlemon, it's very sparse grass over a base of sand that constitutes, for many in Florida, their yard. Usually it's sparse like this under pine trees.

CinnamonGirl 09-16-2009 01:07 PM

hmmm...so would you be "out on a limb," then?

thirdsun 09-16-2009 01:28 PM

Jetée - Good guess. It does kind of look upside down.

CinnamonGirl - Ha! Even I didn't think of that.

The phrase I am thinking of is shorter and more down to "earth".

Here's a hint: the sparsity of the grass is a clue....

Jetée 09-16-2009 01:37 PM

"the grass is always greener on the other side"

thirdsun 09-16-2009 02:01 PM

Getting closer. Think of synonyms for "earth"....

Or, the fact that there is "more" sand than grass....

It's often over-used in business, especially when you start a new job....

Lucifer 09-16-2009 02:39 PM

make hay while the sun shines?

Jetée 09-16-2009 03:03 PM

"from the ground up"

thirdsun 09-16-2009 04:34 PM

There you go! I was hinting at the word "ground".

Ok, Jetée wins that one. Congratulations!

Jetée 09-16-2009 04:40 PM

Cool.

Do you have another? I'd host a round myself, but I as of yet not plunged into buying a digital camera (tally is now at 7 years and counting).

thirdsun 09-16-2009 04:49 PM

Here is a new one:

Re #25:

"Better safe than sorry"?

thirdsun 10-01-2009 04:18 AM

An excellent guess. Very close.

kejago 10-01-2009 04:31 AM

Safe and sound?

thirdsun 10-04-2009 08:58 AM

Yes! That's right!

thirdsun 10-05-2009 04:22 AM

Here's a new one:

MiSo 10-05-2009 10:35 AM

right up your alley?

thirdsun 10-05-2009 10:47 AM

Yes! I guess maybe that one was way too easy....

MiSo 10-05-2009 08:52 PM

since my imagination isn't so great, i'll leave the floor open to someone else to post a picture.
