Civil War......2009

We attended a Civil War re-enactment last month, and here's some images i'd like to share with you fine TFPers.

Well, the southern army won this particular battle, which is probably why this rebel soldier is lookin so smug.

Nice photos!

Do they let Asians fight? I'd love to see a picture of an Asian man in a Civil War reenactment.

One of the guys in the first photo looks like someone I work with, and I know he's into reenactments...

Paddyjoe! Long time no see. And, yeah, these photos bring back some memories. Of re-enactments, not the actual war, smartasses.

Will, i've been racking my brain thinking if I saw any Asians in uniform during the re-enactment. As there were hundreds of soldiers, i'm sure I didn't see them all. But, here's any interesting site, about the real thing:

Asians In The Civil War.

Last time I saw any of this kind of thing was at the 125th anniversary of Gettysburg in 1988. That was special to say the least.

I couldn't think of a more appropriate use of sepia toning. Love that first shot.

With the soft focus and those lovely vignettes I take it you're still shooting with a holga - what else did you use?

thanks, Manic...

the first and the last are holga images, and the battle scenes in between are Nikon D200. I futzed around with them a bit in CS3.

Wow! What a great photo opportunity. I especially like the battle scenes and the smokiness of those. My favorite is the one with the soldier trying to pull himself up with his gun. How long did the entire battle take?

It's a weekend-long event, with minor skirmishes taking place often, but the major battles each day last at least 1 - 1 1/2 hours.

Equal opportunity as well, with the north winning one day, and the south winning the next.

Unless, of course, we are re-enacting an actual battle. Then we stay true to form. There are some people that spend literally years researching troop movements, through old journals, letters, memoirs, maps and anything else they can get their hands on. Then they choreograph re-enactors movements to mimic the original as closely as possible. I haven't been to one of those since the 125th anniversary re-enactments.

These are probably dumb questions, but what exactly are they firing to produce so much smoke? Obviously not real bullets and cannon balls. Giant blanks of some sort? Rubber bullets?

Also, how do the "wounded and killed" get wounded or killed or know when to fall down, etc.? Is is choreographed down to the man?

Filled with black powder. No bullet. In fact, cartridge boxes are inspected to insure that no "live ammo" is fielded.
Bite the twisted end off, pour the powder down the barrel of your musket, tamp with the ram rod, half cock the hammer, place a percussion cap on the nipple, full cock, aim, fire. Black powder smokes like a bitch.

Nothing looks stupider that a line of soldiers firing a volley into another line of soldiers, and not a single man fall. Often, we choose lots. "D3"=Dead on the 3rd volley. "W5"=wounded on the 5th volley. A blank slip usually indicates that you are free to play it by ear.

That is so cool. I can easily see how people get interested and get involved. It would be great fun to see one of these events some time.

Keep me posted on it, because I am serious about wanting to see one of these.

Do they take place on actual battlegrounds, or do they find a less "sacred" place to do these?

I've always wanted to do a road-trip tour of the major CW battlegrounds after I visited Shiloh back in college. It was like a garden there, but it was also a little unnerving thinking about all the lives lost.

Charleston SC has several battles every year. A Revolutionary battle at the plantations each year. They have "War Between the States" battles as well. Look up "The Battle of Charleston", I think they do one then.

PaddyJoe, you old pervert, it's great to see you again! Absolutely amazing photos!

The last time Grancey and I attended one of those things in Mississippi, the Yankee troops accidentally set fire to one of the tents at the encampment. So while we were watching black-powder gunfire on the hill and listening to Dixie, we were also listening to fire trucks swarm all over the lower area. Surreal.
