Old Cemeteries
A couple towns over from me there are 2 old cemeteries. One well maintained and the other not. Both date from the mid 1800's.
Family obelisk. All the names are carved on the side with smaller stones running parallel along the plot. Polished granite. Must be a replacement stone as there are no others similar to this one. Must have been some time since the grounds were maintained. Slate headstone. Very hard to read even in person. I think the person died around 1845. A few from the well kept one. Oldest headstone I found in this one. Dates to 1772. And a couple from a nearby field. Just to break up the ghoulishness... |

I am quite found of obelisks in any country, especially those within driving distance.
A question I've never heard remarked was why do some headstones appear tilted & off-kilter?

I don't find it ghoulish at all. There is so much history that can be found in a cemetery. These pictures are wonderful, they capture the beauty of the stone gardens so well.
In the Victorian era, there were no parks, people had picnics in cemeteries.

I enjoy spending time in cemeteries...I can't explain it, I just do. I don't find your shots ghoulish at all - quite the contrary, actually. Thanks for sharing!

This is a fitting thread for memorial day.

Or you can convert the cemetery into a park, like this:
North Sydney Council - St Thomas Rest Park I find older ones quite an interesting place for a walk through. I'm almost a little saddened by the fact angels and obelisks are being replaced by very simple headstones.

Way cool images. I've yet to visit an old cemetery like this and I really want to. There are a few around here but it's so ridiculous - they're on main roads, fenced off to the side by themselves. Being so close to traffic just drains the beauty out of them.
