I attended a workshop

Yesterday, I spent the day in a lighting workshop with David Tejada, Small Strobes, Big Results. He really is good at this and I learned quite a bit. It was also my first time working with a professional model.

For these images, David would go through his creative process and explain how and why he would light in a certain way. Typically, he'd shoot and then we would look at the result while he would explain each adjustment he was making until he got the desired image. After that, he handed the pocket wizards over to us and let us shoot.

Here are a few of my shots. I can't take much credit for them other than the fact that I pushed the button and did a little post-processing. The lighting is all David.

Cool! Sounds like fun though, and I am sure you learned lots.

Have any more in the series?

What was it like working with a professional model? I mean as far as getting them to pose. Did you tell them what to do, or did they just do what felt natural?

I would love to get into portraits. I might set up a little corner in my basement and do some sheet backdrops and just try it out with some friends to start.

At first, it wasn't at all comfortable... but she was patient and after watching the others work with her, I realized that she was quite open to direction. Then, it's just a matter of coming in with something in mind and asking for it, or paying attention to what she was just doing on her own and asking for a repeat.

I like that first shot. The way the face has texture seems rather unusual.... these days. And yeah... pretty.
