photos Tropical Storm Fay

I have this thing about weather.
I like to get out in it.
So I drove the three miles to the water.
And got some pretty cool shots, I think.
The waves were huge and I got blown right out of my flip-flops once.
And very, very wet.

i left the Keys Sunday, I had a 5pm flight... I was HOPING that it would be cancelled so I could participate in the hurricane parties that i saw the locals getting into while I was preparing to leave. They closed the airport the next morning for 2 days. Damn why didn't I schedule my flight out on Monday?? I woulda been down there partying. Nice pics! Glad the damage was minimal.

Maybe I'm just a wimp, but I probably wouldn't go out in a storm like that. Especially not with my precious camera.

Interesting shots - probably something I will never see or experience firsthand.

I would, but I wouldn't be the first family member to do so. My grandparents, when they lived in Miami, had a habit of going out to walk on the beach as the hurricanes would come in, just before landfall when the storm was churning up huge waves. Once while they were out there, my oma spotted a group of young gentlemen bodysurfing in the heavy surf. She started going off about how irresponsible that was and where were the parents, etc etc. Grandpa had to cut her off and inform her, "Don't look now, Jean, but your oldest son is among them." Sure enough, there was my dad, having his fun. Admittedly, all of the young men were lifeguards who had just finished closing down the beach. Grandpa always did love that story. And noodle, looking at the pictures of the surf reminded me of it. I'm not sure I'm as brave as my dad to actually go in there, but I would definitely walk on the beach.

I never thought of going to the beach to take pics in a hurricane. The pics are amazing. I'll have to try it if we get one this year.

There's always one or two surfers who try to ride the waves and end up dead when hurricanes hit the outerbanks.

Nice shots!

But those people in the water are nuts.

The rain finally stopped here about an hour ago.

Key West is a totally cool place to ride out a storm, or even the after effects. I still have a resident hurricane re-entry permit. I wasn't there for much of the storm but did end up staying in the Marriott right as you turn onto the island the day after one just missed. I had driven down from Miami late one night, lots of wind and rain. I was standing in the pool the next morning and a guy asked "So, they must be fixing your house huh?" I thought what the hell do you know about my house? I live in Oregon. We talked a bit and he said right now only locals were allowed on the island. He seemed quite amazed I wasn't stopped on my way down A-1-A, he said he had a spare hurricane sticker in his van and gave it to me for my rental car. He said all the locals would be down at Sloppy Joe's after the sunset at Mallory. I went down for the sunset and then walked over to Joe's. The streets were empty and the locals were enjoying it... a lot.

A day and half later the island filled with a bunch of motorcycles for "Bike Week" Bike week was nutz, something 200K people and 50K bikes. But I'm not sure that was more crazy then the one night with just the locals.

That is a great story Snowy. Thanks for posting those pics Noodle, nice to really see what it is like in the storm.

Brilliant pictures.

Not the best pictures I've ever seen of Faye blowing in the gulf states.
