Share Never Knew This Many Were Around

Abandoned diners....I keep finding them. (Can't use two icons, but C&C welcomed)
The interior shots were thru the windows. Both diners were found on Route 22 in NJ.

I love those! Childhood memories for me... don't you ever think it'd be a blast to clean one of them up? I keep forgetting you're in Jersey. No wonder they look familiar

I second the Rat's comment! New (chain) ones never have the same panache!

Would you believe the owner of the property where the first one is wants to build a (surprise!) mini-mall?

These diners are no longer being built-they were built in factories and assembled on site. I've come across six so far in just 3 or 4 months in my state alone, all either for sale or slated for demolition while fake chrome and neon monstrosities get erected down the road. Some of these older ones are taken and added to and then, in a nod to some perceived notion of nostalgia, filled with crap like old movie star prints and fake 45 records.

That first one probably doesn't need a huge bankroll to make it a working diner again but that second one is probably in need of a complete overhaul.

There has been an insurgence of interest in these places(the Food Network has had shows about them and has the series "Diners, Drive-in and Dives" which pays homage to the mom and pop establishments), so one can only hope that there will be some enterprising person who sees potential and doesn't turn them into some false "museum" ala "Happy Days", but instead brings them back to their origins.

Beautiful. There's one just like it in Beaverton, Oregon. Or maybe it's Aloha, right before Beaverton. And it is still up and running. Great burgers. Giant shakes. Looks like 1st diner on the outside; the other two photos look like the inside. Everything is shiny chrome.

I like these ng, the last two shots are my favorite.

You edit these in photoshop? I think they need a bit more contrast and the artifacts are a bit distracting.

Which artifacts? Not much editing at all, just a boost to the contrast in the interior shots and cropping.

Kinda forgot about this. I'm not sure of they're artifacts or the result of shooting through a dirty window but they're most obvious in the dark areas of the last two shots and even in the sky of your third shot. If I remember correctly, you shoot RAW so it's strange how lossy these appear to be. What do you process and resize with?

Can you tell me what you mean by "artifacts"?
I upload thru the image converter, they get saved as tiffs and I resize in PS.
Ah...the reason you're seeing what you're seeing is these are saved for web at low jpg.

Max's in Harrison, NJ-the oldest standing diner in the state, built in 1927. Got $180k and it's yours.

Nice photos! PBS recently re-ran a program about diners, & it was quite interesting.

There's a book out too.

There are still a lot of working diners in upstate New York.
