Got a new lens today
50mm f/1.8... This shot is a bit shallower on DoF than I'd like, but I didn't want to flash. It didn't occur to me to adjust the ISO until later.

I like the depth on that shot... though admittedly I'm a whore for shallow DoF pics anyways. I use my f/1.8 at 1.8 as often as possible. Is it a canon lens? The thrifty fifty?
|
No sir... it's a Nikon. :)
|
Ack! NOOOOOOOOO! Meh, it's all good I suppose! ;)
|
We can forgive it being a Nikon, as long as the photos are good. :)
Great starting shot with the dog, too. I love my 50, it's one of my most-used lenses, but, it is a Canon, so it's automatically better. |
LOL... I'm beginning to think you guys are over-compensating for something.
:) |
I agree Xephyers, I like the depth. Not sure we can forgive the Nikon though :)
|
Not to derail the thread, but aren't Nikons much better than Canons? What's your guys' beef with Nikons?
|
actually, Nikon's and Canons are pretty close to par. Many people prefer Canons not for the bodies, but the glass. Canon "L" lenses are often some of the best glass you can get for the money (and they aren't inexpensive). At the pro-am level, the bodies are pretty much the same. At the higher level, Canon does have some higher ground, the 1Ds Mark III is a freakin' fantastic body. The IQ on a lot of Canon lenses is better, in my opinion, as well, even on the lower end of the price range.
Of course, Nikon fans probably have an identical argument for their side, so a grain of salt is needed for this argument. |
Xepherys pretty much nailed it. at the consumer level, you go with the camera that has the features you like -- and personally I think nikons have the better bodies.
But at the pro level, a canon lens will wipe the floor with just about anything else out there. |
I really like your work. Do you have a website?
|
Thanks hagatha. I've got some images up at http://dotdoubledot.com and also http://www.flickr.com/photos/dotdoubledot/

the 50 1.8 is definitely my most used lens, can't be beat for the price, everybody should own 2.

As for the OP, that's a fun lens. I have a Sigma 50mm f/2.8 macro that I bought for my Nikon when I couldn't afford a Nikon lens and it gets lots of use too. I'd love to have it be a 1.8 though. I strive for the shallow depth of field look in a lot of my work. |
