Things to do before you're 10

As a soon to be father (two weeks and counting!), I found this list rather charming.

So, based on a survey of over 1,000 adults, a UK washing powder company has collated a list of 33 things you should do before you're 10 years of age.

I fully intend to complete this list with my son/daughter in the next decade...

1. Roll on your side down a grassy bank.
2. Make a mud pie
3. Make your own modelling dough mixture
4. Collect frogspawn
5. Make perfume from flower petals
6. Grow cress on a windowsill
7. Make a papier-mache mask
8. Build a sandcastle
9. Climb a tree
10. Make a den in the garden
11. Make a painting using your hand and feet
12. Organise your own teddy bears' picnic
13. Have your face painted
14. Bury a friend in the sand
15. Make some bread
16. Make snow angels
17. Create a clay sculpture
18. Take part in a scavenger hunt
19. Camp out in the garden
20. Bake a cake
21. Feed a farm animal
22. Pick some strawberries
23. Play Pooh sticks
24. Recognise five different bird species
25. Find some worms
26. Ride a bike through a muddy puddle
27. Make and fly a kite
28. Plant a tree
29. Build a nest out of grass and twigs
30. Find 10 different leaves in the park
31. Grow vegetables
32. Make breakfast in bed for your parents
33. Make a mini assault course in your garden

THINGS TO DO BEFORE 10

Adults have long compiled lists of things to achieve before they die - but now youngsters are being encouraged to tick off their own "must do" list.

Making a mud pie and organising a teddy bears' picnic are two of the activities kids should apparently indulge in before their 10th birthday.

The list for under-10s has been published to boost development and encourage children to spend more time playing outdoors.

The 33 activities were compiled by experts on behaviour and development, parents and personalities, including former model Melinda Messenger.

''When I was a child I was forever playing outdoors making dens and mud pies," said the mum-of-three.

"It seems a shame that nowdays children are missing out on some of those simple pleasures."

Making a sandcastle was the most fondly remembered activity on the list, followed by climbing trees, building a den and rolling down a grassy bank.

Finding worms and a making mud pies were the least popular, while making breakfast in bed for your parents was the most surprising activity.

Up to 1,000 adults were polled for the list which forms part of Persil's Dirt Is Good campaign to encourage children to exercise.

The 33 things to do by age 10:

1. Roll on your side down a grassy bank.
2. Make a mud pie
3. Make your own modelling dough mixture
4. Collect frogspawn
5. Make perfume from flower petals
6. Grow cress on a windowsill

11. Make a painting using your hand and feet
12. Organise your own teddy bears' picnic
13. Have your face painted
14. Bury a friend in the sand
15. Make some bread
16. Make snow angels
17. Create a clay sculpture
18. Take part in a scavenger hunt
19. Camp out in the garden

Do I want to know what pooh sticks are?

It's a fun list, most of 'em I wouldn't mind doing today... and I'm a lot older than 10...

Some of those things I still do now... just had my face painted two weeks ago :D ... camp out in my bedroom, that close enough?

Pooh Sticks!!!

From AA Milne's classic stories about Winne the Pooh.

You stand on one side of a bridge, preferably over a gently flowing stream, with your friends and all drop sticks in at the same time. You then rush to the other side of the bridge and wait for them to drift by. First one that arrives is the winner!!!

I'm probably Winne the Pooh's oldest fan. My (unborn) child already has the complete works of AA Milne and countless Winne the Pooh toys. :)

Come on, stick! Stick, stick, stick!

Congratulations in advance, Mr. Meph! Mephisto Junior couldn't be getting a better dad.

Pooh Sticks sounds like fun - - I wonder if I could do that on the George Washington Bridge... :)

Everyone should make snow angels and build sand castles...

Frogspawn? Those tadpoles? That used to be so much fun - until i got home and got introuble for coming home wet because I fell in the pond (didn't seem to occur to mom that I could have drowned, the problem was I got my sneakers wet)

This list helps you be a kid again...

They forgot 'lie on the ground, look up at clouds and point out what they resemble' and 'during a summer rain shower, put on a bathing suit and play in the rain'.

Im happy to say not only did I do all of those...my daughter did as well (well not sure about #6 but we grew tomato seedlings in the window sill, and mint too...does that count?)

/thread jacking just a tad

Hey Mr Mephisto...whats her due date so I can put it on my calendar?

Charlatan 07-06-2005 08:14 AM

My son turned 10 last December and I can say that all were completed except #24. Recognise five different bird species. I'm sure he could do it but I don't remember doing it. He could, however, recognize several types of rocks and minerals (he was into rocks) so I say it makes a good substitute.

Mephisto... enjoy these last few weeks... Your life is about to change forever.

And definately for the better, imho. No two ways about it. I know I am a much better man then I have ever been simply for being a father...even under the worst possible circumstances...I wouldn't change a thing.

I am so happy for you Mr. Mephisto. I can't wait to hear how it turns out.

All the best to you, the imminent Mephisto jr and most importantly the Mrs,

-bear

BTW...I have just under 9 years to get cracking on this list. Another list to add to the list of lists

Thanks Shani, ratbastid and J8ear. I'm looking forward to fatherhood and all that it brings. Of course, I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a little bit nervous too... :)

J8ear, maybe that little Princess of yours will turn you in a soft-hearted liberal yet! I can't believe how much she's grown in the past year!

Hey - where's the "will run with scissors just to make my Mother stress to the max" and "take someone's eye out" entries?

Kidding...just kidding!

This is a great list and something that every adult should do as well! Children have the amazing ability to keep us young - we can learn a lot from them by throwing out our inhibitions and just playing with them in puddles on a rainy day. They know the true meaning of enjoying life - just to have fun and live for the moment!

And as a side note.....Pooh Sticks ROCK! :D
