Growing pains
I've heard conflicting stories about what growing pains are.
Lately my daughter has been complaining of leg pain. She may be walking along, playing, sitting, or lying and then she'll move and then suddenly say "OW!" and sometimes even cry. She'll sit and rub her legs or ask me to carry her because it hurts to walk. It doesn't seem to be one single activity that aggravates it. She says that the pain is in the back of her legs mostly or around her knees. It seems to affect her most when she's been idle for a while and then moves. She's not always sitting on her knees or in a position that would cut off the circulation. The pain seems to be worse when she puts weight on her knees. At least that's when she complains more. I'm only really able to tell what I SEE since she's not able to explain what or where it's hurting precisely. Is this possibly 'Growing Pains'? I never really had them much that I remember and my mom says I didn't complain much about it. She just knew when I had a growth spurt because all of a sudden I'd be running into things, tripping and just an overall clutz. My brother on the other hand has some severe leg pain that the Dr's attributed to growing pains. I remember him in tears even has a preteen and my mom staying up nights to rub his legs just so he could sleep. They've since diagnosed him with Juvinile Rheumatoid Arthritis. I'm afraid it could be something like this. Especially since there is a history in my family of immune problems of that sort (Lupus type disease and Adult Rheumatoid arthritis) If it continues or re-occures I do intend to go to her Dr. I want all the info I can find though. I want to hear what KIND of pain anyone here had when it came to growing. Where did it hurt? Was it sudden? Any experiences or information would be helpful.

I have two brothers, and of the three of us boys we all grew 6 or so inches at least in one year, sometimes two, and none of us experienced anything remotely like what you are talking about.
I did experience shin splints during football season one time though, and those are due to the amount of groundpounding I did, not growth. That sounds a bit like what you are talking to, but it sounds like you've got some latent genetic issues here. |

I had growing pains real bad as a kid. I think they started when I was about 10 and went until 14 or 15. I don't remember being doubled-up in pain or anything, but I sure knew they were there.
It was a dull ache that got sharp occasionally. I don't remember it being associated with movement at all. I could be sitting still or walking, whatever, and it could start hurting. |

My brother had growing pains when he was around 13. The only time I really heard of it happening is in puberty. I guess the obvious question is; has she had a growth spurt? If she's grown taller or filled out a little bit more that could why she's feeling sore. Maybe she's moving in a way that's straining her muscles? I guess just observe the behaviours leading up to the pain as much as possible so you can give the docotor all the information on your daughter that you have.

I have been watching her movements to see if there's any particular position that triggers it. It seems to have no common causes. Once it hits her she just wants to sit down because of the pain.
A friend suggested that it could be an attention getting ploy but she's done it while playing with her friends outside and then called for me, she's been playing with me and stopped mid sentence because of the pain. It's obviously REAL. I just so hoping that it's only growing pains. I do think I may make an appointment with the chiropractor, see if he can help the pains go away, and then see what happens after that.

mine were awful, I would sit and cry an cry and beg to be put on a "rack" lol. I felt like if my legs could just stretch enuff the pain would stop. To this day I can still remember how badly they hurt, I had two bouts of them one when I was about 10ish and the other when when I was 13/14 (I turned 14 in july)...thats the summer I grew a lot..I was 4'7 in June and 5'2 by the time school started in August.
There was nothing that ever helped it and they would come out of no where. I could just be sitting on the couch and the pain would hit me. poor thing, I hope it doesn last long for her

***to add to what I said above
I meant to clarify me wanting to be "stretched". My pain was usually around the backs of my knees down into my calves. It felt like all my muscles were bunched up. I dont remember that my thighs ever hurt at all and the tops of my knees didnt bother me. The pain would usually always start at the bend on the back part of the knee and radiate downward, never upwards, and it would stop at my ankles. It was the whole leg part that hurt shins AND calves.

A friend's daughter is actually in therapy right now for what's commonly called 'growing pains'. Sometimes the growth plates and joints can't keep up with the rate of growth and the joints become seperated or dislodged. This also happened to my brother and he had to stop playing basketball in high school because of his knees.
It's not an attention ploy at all. If it really gets to the point of interfering with her normal activities, a visit to the doctor might be in order-knees and hips, places with growth plates, can become injured. I am surprised, on the other hand, that my son has NOT had any growing pains-he grew a foot in just over a year and at 13, is 5'10"!!! When askd if his legs hurt, he said not at all. We figure in 8th grade, he could be well over 6 feet.

Yeah she has grown 3 inches in the past 3 months and she's suddenly very hungry and sleeping more. All pretty good side that she's growing fast right now.

I used to get aches in my legs just when I was in bed for the night... I would say it was around age 10 to 13 or so.
It was a dull but persistent ache.

Well took her to the Chiropractor. He said that usually if it's arthritic or something beyond strained/stretched muscles the person finds it painful to press directly on the joint. He checked her out and she had no pain from any pressure. He showed me some stretches that I can do with her to help those muscles not be so strained. He said to do them daily and to do them regularly for a week. If she continues to have pain after a week I am to bring her back in again. If not he will check her out once more in 2 weeks. He's hoping that the stretches will help and that these are only growing pains.
