what are the chances?
.1% apparently....
quick scenario. i got married dec 18 oh four. honeymoon for a few days in cancun, first apartment here in the city...and all of a sudden... ... <- or should i say lack of. the missus has been on birthcontrol for a while now, a while i mean, since like june/july somethin.. ortho-lo and has taken it to the T. every day on the hour. not missing one beat. and all is good...or so i think... she was supposed to have construction on i-81 southbound this weekend (ifyaknowwhatimean) but for some reason traffic never got deserted, the workers never showed.... so we bought a test the other day. maybe you've heard of it, it's the pink one that shows it early, and lets you know if you're a "little pregnant". well she took it, and wham..2 pink lines...nah..that can't be..maybe you did it wrong, do the other....and to our surprise...2 pink lines. WHAT ARE THE CHANCES?! do i have supersperm that the government needs to know about? is it a fluke? she went to get bloodwork done today, and we wont know untill monday...what am i to be expecting here...is this it? am i gonna be poppa tek? any insight...any comments, comfort, criticism? anyone been in the same shoes as me? now don't get me wrong, it's not like i don't WANT a kid...i'm just not sure that i'm ready yet. we were gonna finish up school, and get us settled first, so our kid wouldn't have to grow up like his old man, and go throught what he did.. i guess i'm rambling now. -tek |
Well, look on the box, the pill is only what 98% effective? My wife has been on it for years, literally. We want kids but can't really afford them right now. (Hate this fucking down economy) I wouldn't say you have super sperm, just that you hit that lucky 2% mark.
Enjoy being a dad. I can't wait for it myself. |
There are a zillion things that affect the efficacy of birth control, things they don't tell you until you end up pregnant going, "WTF???"....
Many antibiotics and other drugs affect b/c. Some vitamins affect the balance of hormones in a woman's body, making the level of b/c not enough. Hormone levels affect it. Stress affects not only hormones but b/c, too. Some foods can affect it. *shrugs* And there's that whole just the 1% failure rate, right place/right time, all the stars are in alignment, your sperm were on the ball thing. For what its worth, congratulations. I don't want kids myself, but if this is what you want, then yay! |
congrats btw, as stated above the pill is usually affective but it can have its weaknesses, my wifes pill was as useless as a m&m when she started to take an iron supplement for low iron. doctors suggestion. loved his reaction when she got pregant and my wife asked why, she was taking the pill everyday, same time..etc. doctor was like "oh, sorry the iron pills were cancelling out the birth control pills." was okay as we were going to start trying the next month or so. but was funny when he got clue in his mind, like his face went all white. hehe. i think he though we would be upset.

Go with it Tek..........if you wait till you are ready to have kids, you never will.

I'm one of those guys who's learned the hard way not to trust birth control. From my experience the chances are damned good. I often wonder if when they give a birth control a rating of 98% effective, if what it really means is that 98% of the people using will experience 100% effectiveness and that the other 2% of people (my category) get zero. :)
I've seen condoms, the pill, an IUD, and Norplant all fail in my personal life. Apparently I should have worn a Kryptonite jockstrap to negate the little wigglers. There's a lot to be said for waiting to have a baby until you're "ready", but if the choice is taken away from you rest assured the wonder of fatherhood won't be one bit diminished. |
I had a postive EPT once and it turned out a week later I started my period. The doctor says it is not unusual in this day and age to get a false positive. Wait and see what the blood test says. Congrats either way!

It's official
i'm gonna be a daddy!
everything happens for a reason, and it's in better hands than my own right now. thanks for all the feedback, i'm sure i'll be in this forum a lot more for the next while.! :D |
Congrats, Tek! Ain't nothing like it. :)
|
wow, congratulations! I totally agree with what tecoyah said. Let us know when you find out if it's a boy or a girl!

Being a poppa is great. We have a four year old daughter...wouldn't trade it for nuttin', even if it does cramp our lifestyle somewhat.

CONGRATS!!!!
You will enjoy this. I promise. |
well i'm back...again...remember how not to long ago i said everything happens for a reason...well for one reason or another...i'm not gonna be a father....nature took it's intended course, and well...shit happens...
on the other hand...we did buy a parakeet named baz, and well..that's our "baby" for now...and as far as BC goes...well thats another story. |
Whoa...so, what happened? Mistaken pregnancy test? Miscarriage?
|
Condolences to you and your wife...
Hopefully there will be other chances in the future.... |
miscairriage...gotta go next month to see why...doc might have some answers to the whole thing.
|
Sometimes these things just happen. Women have miscarriages all of the time - and many didn't even realize that they were pregnant.
Sorry this happened to you, hopefully she's okay. And you too :icare: |
I've had two miscarriages over 6 months. It's apprantly quite normal, and even preferrable given the potential outcome if the pregnancy was coddled along. Other than the hormonal upheaval, you just have to take on a pragmatic attitude, and accept it as part of the process...
|
Yep, a miscarriage happens because there is something wrong with the fetus. With her on birthcontrol, it is most likely that the fetus wasn't able to form properly. I wouldn't stress. Just know that it can happen when you two are truly ready!

When the time is right, tek, it'll all come together for ya.
