Accidental Ingestion

What the wierdest thing you OR your child have eaten?? I just got to thinking about this when today I was standing next to my daughter watching her color. The phone rang, I answered it, Talked for MAYBE 2 or 3 minutes, and when I hung up she turned to me and announced "I just swallowed the marker cap!" Ok she's 4, I know she wasn't trying to eat it when I answered the phone. From what I can gather she was just chewing on it while coloring and according to her it when down sideways. It's about 1/3 of an inch in diameter and 2 inches long. Its smooth and bends somewhat. I called the Dr's office and they said to just watch her for 2-3 days until it should be through her system. I asked her if it hurt. She said "Just a little." and went back to coloring like nothing had happened. She got some hiccups minutes later but eating some soft bread calmed them down within a couple bites.

I know as a kid my Mom tells me a large button showed up in my diaper. Supposedly Hubby ate a quarter once as an infant. Neither of us swallowed something when we were older. Nor did either of us get peas stuck in our noses or some such oddity.

Any odd items you got stuck and a child? Or did you swallow something on accident or on purpose??

I ate a full pack of Trident gum when I was still in diapers. I guess it was on purpose. I've tried to swallow gum now and it's nearly impossible, I have no idea how I managed back then. I'm told that I had a bright green poop that day.

I once got a vitamin stuck up my nose. I ended up inhaling it. So I guess that counts as ingestion. I think I was maybe 5 or so at the time.

Nothing more than a toothpaste cap and a key for my daughters. However, my dogs are amazing. Best I can tell it's a straight shot from tongue to tail. You wouldn't believe the interesting dog doo I shovel out of the back yard.

my 10 month old daughter is like a vacuum, she'll eat anything she can see on the ground. you have to walk around and look for the smallest piece of fabric or thread or she'll gobble it up. the thing i freak out about is the cat hair, my cat sometimes will drop fur bombs, big tuffs as she runs around playing. very furry cat, my daughter just swallows those up, hard to stay ahead of her, keep waiting for her to cough up a hair ball.

I don't recall every eating anything funny, or my parents telling me I ate anything funny....my brother once ate a cigarette as a child (yick!), started crying, and continued eating....

My son ate part of a crayon once. He had some bright green poop later that day. He never was the kind to really stick a lot of stuff in his mouth, I don't know why he decided the crayon looked delicious that day.

My oldest girl drank half a bottle of tea tree oil when she was about 18 months old. Her stupid mother forgot to fasten the child proof lid, so it was off to hospital in an ambulance for a lovely charcoal drink.

Other odd things my kids have eaten are half a cockroach (found the other half in her mouth), dry cat food and a wishing stone. I poked her shit all weekend waiting for the darn thing to come out the other end!

Man, I'm lucky my kids weren't much into eating weird things. My son stuck bits of paper in his ear once, and we had to take him to the hospital to have it rinsed out.

My kid lodged a dried pea in his nose. After it went in, it became a much larger rehydrated pea. Actually had to go to the hospital to get it out.

Around second grade or so a friend of mine bought this stuff that looks like chewing tobacco (even came in the same type of can) but was actually some kind of shredded beef jerky. I'm sure it's since been banned for encouraging tobacco use among minors, but I digress. Anyway, for reasons now unclear to me, we snorted a lot of it.

Now that I think back on it he came from a rather messed up family. He was probably imitating his parents snorting cocaine, and I was just going along with whatever he was doing.

We haven't found anything strange in the Baronet's diapers, yet, although my mother assures me that she found a pebble once in my diaper when I was a wee lad.

My 18 month old son grabbed a half full glass of wine and got a few drops before being policed by mom. That was funny after the fact. Most of it was soaked up by our very light colored carpet. We always have the bottle of Resolve near by.

That was nothing compared to 2 nites ago when my son was at a business and found a candle within arms reach. He tried to drink the lit candle. It was full of hot, melted wax. (Those of you who are thinking bad parent need to understand the speed and curiosity of an 18 month old.) No one seemed to know a candle was lit and in the easy picking of a small boy until the screaming started.

Yes, there was wax in the mouth
Yes, there was a lengthy visit to the emergency room
Yes, he is fine and somehow escaped any and all burns
Yes, we are actually good parents :) - no, really!

Grasshopper Green 03-06-2005 05:58 PM

Yikes, wax!!! I'm glad that he is ok. And having had an 18 month old, I can quite understand how things like that happen.

PS...love the signature :)

i don't remember it, but i'm told that when i was very young i drank dog shampoo.

my brother ate a lot of red crayons (only the red ones) and glue. my other brother drank some fingernail polish remover. my sister didn't eat anything weird, but there were several trips to the er where she stuck things in her ears and nose (food, beads etc)--and this went on for years. the last i recall she was in like 3rd or 4th grade?

my nieces and nephews have eaten and drank from the dog food and water bowls. and my youngest nephew has no concept of dirty food--on the floor, on the table or counter in a restraunt, he doesn't care! if he sees it, wants it, and gets to it before we get to him, he eats it. he's almost four, i'm hoping he outgrows it soon!

guthmund 03-07-2005 03:12 PM

I ate some wrapping paper when I was a kid. My mother swears that it caused my ears to swell up. Nothing else, just my ears.

My nephew used to have a penchant for the dried food his grandmother kept out for her dog.

Xell101 03-07-2005 05:06 PM

Only innapropriate item I ever ate was a poisonous flower my sister accidentally tricked me into eating. I was a pretty smart kid.
